Indo advice

mtepaa started the topic in Wednesday, 24 Aug 2016 at 01:24 pm

Hi there, I'm pretty new to surfing.
I understand this question might of been asked a few times already. Google seems to be filled with too many options.
I want to do a Indo trip, I've never been, and I'm seeking advice on a good budget friendly camp/lodge. (preferably with scooter and meals included)
I've been surfing for 2 years approx twice a week, so I'm starting to get more consistent trimming down the line on anything up to 3ft that isn't too hollow. (I prefer right hand breaks)
If anyone know's of any camps that would fit the bill for me or any other advice I'd super appreciate it. Prefer non crowded spots :) Thanks heaps!

Really can't go past Bali as an introductory Indo surf trip, lots of fun beaches west from Legian and a bunch of surf camps in that region too.

Plenty of Mellow options on the right day maybe Kuta region of Lombok if you want an alternative to Bali.
As for Indo advice don't bring in drugs and whatever you do don't kill a cop.

Ha yes to true !!

Blowin Wednesday, 24 Aug 2016 at 05:56 pm

Gets loose on the juice eh ?

Never met the bloke or had anything to do with him , but it looks like he specialises in shepherding a flock around Bali.

Wealth of knowledge and a top guide but FFS ....get blind drunk and start picking fights with your customers?

Hako o hakonde… Thursday, 25 Aug 2016 at 07:04 am

I would not expect anything less in Bali. ;-)

mtepaa Thursday, 25 Aug 2016 at 01:02 pm

Thanks guys will check out Bali/Lombok options... had a look at baliwaves websites, lots of good info. Sounds like a character this fella :)

Wharfjunkie Thursday, 25 Aug 2016 at 03:37 pm

Reading the above comments you can only assume if you like drinking and fighting Slims your man.

Is slim Balinese or an expat?
I always check into his site before heading over and always assumed he was Balinese but a few months back said he was staying in Newcastle, nsw.

jezza64 Thursday, 25 Aug 2016 at 09:31 pm

I've stayed with Slim half a dozen times. Always had good waves, surfed places that his local knowledge has wired and seen lots of Bali the hordes miss. Had a few brews, as you do, never seen any fighting. Already booked again for next trip.

Wharfjunkie Thursday, 25 Aug 2016 at 09:33 pm

Didn't have enough brews.

Blowin Friday, 26 Aug 2016 at 08:22 am

If you're getting dragged around Bali by a paid surf guide you ARE the hordes.

You'd have to be stoked surfing a quiet spot when a bule pulls up with half a dozen paying ducklings in tow wouldn't you ?

derra83 Friday, 26 Aug 2016 at 08:34 am

Touche. Makes me realise how low surfing has sunk finding out people need a guide to surf Bali, and not for their first time there but for six trips to Bali! Where the fuck has your spirit of adventure gone??? You make Club Med look like Shackleton's journey.

I understand both sides derra & jezza.

If you're time poor and only have a week or so to find the best waves possible away from the crowds, then I can understand getting Slim to play the "surf guide".

But I also fully get where blowin and derra are coming from, getting out and exploring are often the best parts of a surf trip.

mick-free Friday, 26 Aug 2016 at 11:24 am

Blowin, he managed to turn up to a few uncrowded spots last year when it was cranking. I found his guests aren't the 'take every wave' shit heads you get normally. So has a knack of being in the right spot. I reckon Slim is probably a good option for a first timer.

Those guys wouldn't have been adding numbers to the line up , good blokes or not , if it wasn't for the bule surf guide.

Fleazool Friday, 26 Aug 2016 at 03:33 pm

I stayed with Slim back in 1999/2000. He was running his little enterprise out of a guest house in Tuban. As I was staying there solo after mates came home, it was pretty sweet having crew from all over the place to hang with and team up to do surf missions & boat trips etc. Even back then he had a fair few returning annually. Not sure what the story is now.
mtepaa with 2 years under your belt stick to the beachies.

ps. Last I bumped into Slim was around '05 where we proceeded to smash a bottle of arak just for catching up. He liked a drink.

Taco Friday, 26 Aug 2016 at 07:26 pm

Each to their own but I'd rather hang with myself in Indo and surf the same..If you want company it's not hard to find these days ,head to your favourite warung and talk to someone other than yourself for a bit..even as first timer anywhere, you need to make your own decisions ,you win some you lose some..That's one of the great gifts of being a surfer I think..

Wharfjunkie Friday, 26 Aug 2016 at 08:08 pm

Fleazool did Slim smash the bottle over your head after you smashed the bottle of arak together.

goofyfoot Friday, 26 Aug 2016 at 08:52 pm

Now that's when you know you've had a ripper night on the turps

Fleazool Saturday, 27 Aug 2016 at 12:55 pm

Ha ha WJ no, never saw an aggressive side. He was always pretty chilled.

Righto Gurus

Got a window up my sleeve early november and have been thinking of taking my chick to lakeys.
Just after some advice/wisdom regards winds/waves etc.

Chick surfs well, so no problem there. Have heard will be morning offshores then blown out afternoons?

Any info would be great. Also open to other suggestions.

udo Wednesday, 19 Oct 2016 at 09:39 pm

Nov is o.k. can still get 4-6ft ,wind info is correct, pain in the arse to get to a few hours from Bima by car....Airlines may still be looking inside board bags and charging per board not per bag....Usually Brazzo free by November.

dilmah Thursday, 20 Oct 2016 at 09:47 am

Thanks udo.

Pain in the arse from bima as its late season or just pain in the arse all the time?

udo Thursday, 20 Oct 2016 at 12:09 pm

Not really that much of a pain just added time to get there...around $80 fare by memory
Lakey Peak inn site gives some info .

Edit : yep 800,000 R for Bima to Lakeys fare.

tangles 65 Monday, 5 Dec 2016 at 12:07 pm

yep udo I got slugged $60 by wings for my board bag Bima-Dps last month. Told 'em I had 2 boards but they checked. And I had 3...

udo Monday, 5 Dec 2016 at 12:22 pm

tangles did you get o.k. waves and had the crowds eased by then ?
