Good Quad/Twin Classic Fish Shaper ?

Mat6920 started the topic in Wednesday, 12 Apr 2017 at 11:11 am

Hey !

I am looking to get a fish, short with high volume for small mushy days, something that flies over flat section. Anyone would know what shaper does great job for this type of design. Looking at this type of board (American shaper so too expensive too import)
https://albumsurf.com/collections/UTF

My 2nd question is would you recommend a twin fish set up for beginner/intermediaire or a quad ? I tried the DHD mini twin fin this morning as a trial in 5'7 30l, sooooo drifty straight away after take off, impossible to control. I saw a lot of positive feedback on Gary McNeill RTT, anyone had tried this model ?

I currently ride Lost Rocket v3 6'1, i m 188cm 83kg lean fit, this board is great but needs a bit of size to perform.

Thanks!

I've got an Anchovy Fish made by Jye Byrnes, with quads. Its a fantastic board, Fast, loose with good drive and holds in bigger waves too. It looks old skool but is actually very refined. I prefer quads as they are a bit more versatile than twins, but they are all fun in the right waves.

I have quads and keels in this shape and many AU shapers will shape them, depends on where you live, see your local shaper. Personally I prefer the keel fish, so much fun and so fast.

the mick mackie fish look very good.

i recently had a keel fish (with two nurse fins) shaped by neil luke. by far the best board i've ridden. it's a kneeboard, but then the fish is a kneeboard design. not sure if he shapes for stand-ups. it has chine rails and a very complex bottom.

Thanks guys, Morg, I was really hesitating to get this board as well, looked really good ! someone else advised me this shaper but I ended up ordering one from Dick Van Straalen (classicwaterman), gonna get a quad fish, had a nice conversation over the phone with him, and out of the blue a friend got this model from him a few weeks ago and loves it, destiny ! Will get a 5'10 / 21 1/2 / 2 3/4 according to his recommendations.

@Mat, Dick will shape you a beauty, have surfed his fishes for years, absolutely love them. On his quads Dick has his own fins that work a cracker. You definitely will not be disappointed.

@Turks, how big is that Desert Storm but perhaps more pertinent how big are the waves you ride it in?

Funny, rode the 6'0 Leroy Stacey on Monday this week, and the 9'0 coulda been the go the next day. The big fella has had a run a coupla times recently during the Drug Aware period. All waves within easy sight of shore. Don't wanna get too mental at my age.

Stay tuned for a pic of another board of mine, Smiley (when quads, even 5 finners, just aren't enough!). Jordy knows the score!

That's a lot of posca TT. Nice board but. Real nice...

Haven't ridden a fish in ages and I often wonder when the urge will gonna come around again. I like the feeling but find it's an all or nothing approach with fish: you either ride them exclusively or not at all. Jumping around doesn't do any design justice.

That said, my office is upstairs from a surf shop and they stock immaculate Mackie fish. Despite the roots of the design his versions always appear more futuristic then even the most hi-fi computer-shaped, pro-model popout. Can fondle those things for hours and days.

it's hard to walk out of that store without a mackie fish under the arm.

stunet Thursday, 20 Apr 2017 at 06:45 pm

...and it'll have my greasy fingerprints all over it.

GuySmiley Thursday, 20 Apr 2017 at 07:35 pm

all that surf shop has to do is order a Mackie in a nice RED and Stu will be putty in the hands of the shop staff ....

That would be a divine sign that couldn't be ignored.

Not really a 'classic' but great grovelers. Lost puddle fish, jumper or Mt woodgee aardvark

Fins, comes down to personal preference.

Dick Van Straalen
does great classic fish out lines with modern refinement, true craftsman

Dick Van Straalen makes nice boards. I'd love to ride one of his Fish with the concave inverted v channel thing running through it (it would have a cool name but that's how they look)

Super brand just released a channel bottom twinfin - The Siamese Twin
Nice looker.

Have a look at vouch fishes, they look mighty fun: https://northcoastsurfboards.com.au/collections/vouch

They also have some takayamas, very classic, not sure how well they perform: https://northcoastsurfboards.com.au/collections/surfboards-by-donald-ta…

Personally I've been eyeballing the DHd twin but am reluctant to buy it as Asher Pacey makes it look too easy: https://dhdsurf.com/surfboards/twin-fin/

Not bad for small summer waves, Ry! That Super has very knifey rails.

Mat6920 Friday, 16 Jun 2017 at 10:48 am

So i end up with the quad fish from DVS in 5'10, the board has a unique feeling under the feet, really pleasant feeling of flying on top of the water it s crazy, however I find it a bit too bulky, lot of volume !! you have to surf it a bit hard to turn.
