Discussion about the

This recent swell has me reconsidering my age and what is required for big winter swell. If anyone is interested in moving on a DS board 6'6-6'10" about 40LT then let me know now or when one might be available.

I know these boards sit around not getting much use but I don't want to be caught out on 32LT next time a swell like this hits with 25knot offshores.

Blowin Sunday, 30 May 2021 at 12:12 pm new

I had a fun surf on my DS a couple of days ago at a ledgey wave when almost everyone else out was struggling on their 6’2” “ step-ups” . ‘Twas windy and lumpy and hilarious watching crew miss wave after wave or get immediately caught behind the section on takeoff.

I’d normally say don’t bring a knife to a gunfight, but cause the swell was pretty average and ugly as it was building, in this instance it was more a matter of don’t bring piss to a shitfight.

joakse Sunday, 30 May 2021 at 12:23 pm new

That was me today, bringing a knife. If anyone has one they're keen to offload more than happy to take a look. I'm not even sure that step ups were performing today as I reckon they're just to light in such winds.

Hi Island Bay, haven't been on this forum for a while. Was your 8'6 DS a custom or stock dimensions?

Island Bay Friday, 11 Jun 2021 at 01:49 pm new

Hey SS.

It is a stock 8'6. So far wouldn't change a thing.

seaslug Sunday, 13 Jun 2021 at 09:45 am new

Thanks Island Bay, so the stock comes with dual leg rope plugs? Wayne could not remember haha. Tossing up between a stock 8' or 8'6"

groundswell Sunday, 13 Jun 2021 at 09:52 am new

hey seaslug my 6'6 didnt come with duel leash plugs but i told Wayne i rarely surf bigger than 6 foot point any more.on a stand up at least. maybe his bigger boards do though.

seaslug Sunday, 13 Jun 2021 at 09:53 am new

Also what Captain Fins do you have, the CF Quad Medium or the Classic Quad?

lostdoggy Sunday, 13 Jun 2021 at 10:06 am new

When I had a look at the rack all the smaller ones up to about 6'6 or maybe 7' had one leggie plug. All the ones bigger than that had 2.

seaslug Sunday, 13 Jun 2021 at 10:09 am new

Cheers Lost Doggy, my stock 6'10 has one

seaslug Sunday, 13 Jun 2021 at 10:10 am new

Thanks ground swell

Island Bay Sunday, 13 Jun 2021 at 10:22 am new

seaslug, I've been running these in the big DS:

https://www.surfnvs.com/collections/apex-quad/products/bronn-quad-apex-…

Otherwise I've had great success with these (incl yesterday in my 7'6 Spartan):

https://captainfin.com/products/mccallum-quad

Re leash plugs, all the bigger ones Ive seen have had double plugs.

seaslug Sunday, 13 Jun 2021 at 10:42 am new

Island Bay, the Captain Fins you reference are sold out at the moment according to their website. The the CF Quad Medium or the Classic Quad are available. I'll have a look at the other ones you reference.

I have not ridden my 7'6 Spartan with quads, only JJF thruster mediums.

Thanks re plugs, now to decide between the 8' or 8'6

Island Bay Sunday, 13 Jun 2021 at 10:51 am new

Yep! With both flat and 80/20 rears. Shipping was cheap.

seaslug Sunday, 13 Jun 2021 at 11:22 am new

Anyone tried C Drive fins in their DS?

groundswell Sunday, 13 Jun 2021 at 11:35 am new

No they look weird but go great apparently. i just use EA's and forget about it. I liked them since i used a set 11 years ago. They go well in DS too.But bloody pricey $229 a set.

seaslug Sunday, 13 Jun 2021 at 12:22 pm new

I'm currently using the front EA out of a thruster set (bigger dimensions than the fronts out a EA quad set) and separate QD2 3.75 rears with 80/20 foil (smaller dimension than the rears out of a EA quad set, all in honeycomb

Island Bay Sunday, 13 Jun 2021 at 02:16 pm new

Sounds ok to me, SS. Probably a little looser than a normal EA fibreglass set (with the bigger fronts/smaller rears).

In the for-the-hell-of-it dept, I just surfed my 8'6 DS in 2ft lined up beach break. Have sold my longboard and just wanted to glide, so gave it a go. Ended up with two little cover-ups and some ok turns. Love that board.

seaslug Sunday, 13 Jun 2021 at 03:07 pm new

Cheers IB, the BRONN QUAD (M) - APEX fins you mentioned have very similar dimensions (A, B, H) to the quad EA fibreglass set (both front and rear flat foil only). Not sure about rake.

Good news on your surf, still have to decide between the 8' or 8'6

udo Sunday, 13 Jun 2021 at 03:48 pm new

I.B. do you have a set of Keels you can put in that 8'6 " for a 'Long Twin' Trail ..

Island Bay Sunday, 13 Jun 2021 at 03:54 pm new

Udo, I thought of that as I was out this arvo. I have a set of these, and I'll give them a go tomorrow or Tueday:

seaslug Sunday, 13 Jun 2021 at 07:02 pm new

Be good to get your feedback on that IB

Island Bay Monday, 14 Jun 2021 at 10:42 am new

Seaslug, I ran the 8'6 as a twin today - especially for you :-)

2ft+ bowly, lined-up beachbreak, and it went well. Felt a little faster, and definitely looser. I'd have to ride a righthander to really confirm how different it is, but so far so good.

Not what the board was made for. Please accept my apologies, Webby!

groundswell Monday, 14 Jun 2021 at 12:03 pm new

I surf my DS in small stuff too IB. easy board to ride but i cant drop the wallet on them..too much of a cruiser for that..but easy to catch waves of 1-2ft i surfed it at jakes on a four foot swell but took me ages to get a wave with a crowd out there..i hate competing for waves when im rusty at surfing.
Even tough im doing a lot of bench presses and gym work on shoulders and chest tris and bis surfing is hard for me when i dont surf often.

seaslug Monday, 14 Jun 2021 at 12:53 pm new

Haha cheers IB. Just ordered the DS 8' x 20", stock.

Surfing hard for all of us when we don't surf often GS, especially as we get older. Keep it up mate

Another run on the 8'6 DS as a twinnie yesterday. 3-4ft at my local reef/point, with 15kt devil wind.

Tide a bit full, and with the devil wind chop a bigger board was the call. The DS went superbly in those conditions, and while being solidly overgunned, I wouldn't have swapped for anything else. The drive off the bottom turn is something else.

Definitely feels looser with the twins, but still not sure whether it's faster than as a quad. Fun to experiment, though.

Got dragged across the dry inside section a few times. Big board like that is a bloody anchor!

udo Wednesday, 16 Jun 2021 at 02:23 pm new

I.B -
Jim Banks...what i am finding is my Quad Guns are converting straight over to Twin Fins without having to change the Board Design at all and i am Definitely going faster...
Get some Footage out there Jim please.

Island Bay Wednesday, 16 Jun 2021 at 02:42 pm new

If the footage exists, Surf Detective Udo will unearth it!

Geez, you're a super sleuth - and I mean that in the nicest possible way.

groundswell Wednesday, 16 Jun 2021 at 03:13 pm new

Yeah Udo Jim has some great looking mid length twins in his new range. Might be torryn and josh Kerr influencing the movement.
I can only afford one of his boards a year though and It will likely be a magic carpet fish with glass on keels. hard backhand unless you’re in the zone and surfing them a lot. But best fishes on the market for down the line pits especially 2~6ft barrels in Indo not too ledgey or bumpy conditions though.
A few people I know think his boards are too stiff and tracky but I’ve never had so much fun...putting a lot of back foot pressure on the keels then flying back into the pocket never had so much fun.

joakse Wednesday, 16 Jun 2021 at 06:09 pm new

Thanks Udo,
You gotta be quick. She’s gone. Appreciate the link.

Been in the garage packing up boards for the impending move, and quickly lined up the (semi) heavy artillery.
6'4 DS
6'10 DS
7'6 Spartan
8'6 DS
Yes, I really should clean them up and give them a fresh waxjob, but at least they see some use. And sorry about the shitty photo.

Gday DS fans. Owner of a 6’8x20x3x42L custom DS, glassed to last, being a one board quiver for travels in a very small boat, been looking for ages for fin config to get the most fun out of that big slab of foam and glass on head high days

so yeah, looking for fin config that’ll work WITH all that rail and rear V, allow me to lay her over on a reasonable turn radius in headhigh waves without having to get the back foot so far back [the case with even small quad and thruster setups] it feels like you’re driving a long-bonnet Kenworth, all that board and weight swinging around out the front, no bueno

A big ask, but with all the development going on with getting longer thicker boards going top-to-bottom [as opposed to just hipstering up front all day] - Torren, Twin Pins, NPJs etc, and all sorts of twin+trailer rig experimentation - figure someone might’ve found something that’ll fit the bill on a chunky DS

have tried a few options with what i have from thruster and quad sets - large MF-1 fronts with knubster trailer [lacks drive] Mayhem quad rears up front with GX-Q quad trailers [limbo going rail-to-rail], PC-3 thruster set, but for me dont seem to mesh with what that chunky rail and rear V wanna do on a small canvas

big twins up front and small trailer look worth a try, but given the cost & hassle of getting fins out to the islands under covid, figure worth checking in here as there’s been some great DS feedback. reccos greatly appreciated, thanks!!
