Now that I've got your attention......

Is this a pic of the red herring? I can't really find a setup looking nearly as good, nearby! The way those lines just jump off the screen. Anyway, My point was that any swell coming from that general area and direction might go better on the chain immediately behind the baguette.

Let's say a swell line comes from 30S 160W. As it approaches target chain, the bathymetry would bend the swell lines counter-clockwise. So we have swell approaching the reef from the ESE/SE and E, and a right with an intense bowling shape. You only Lifou once aye, only one way to find out. I knew the area you were talking about straight up btw becuase you've mentioned it elsewhere... ;)

Sheepdog Wednesday, 9 Jul 2014 at 09:52 am new

No doubt frogs legs would be awesome too..... But can only speculate, cos I haven't physically been there... But have been around herrings.... Yeh, photo of the red herring, from a certain surfing site...... The spot I have noticed is alot more open..... Looks like on the day photo was taken between sets, but definite tell tale white water trail with a wave peaking at take off..... Not a herring....... But you'll figure out a fish you like.... Not now, maybe in an hour, maybe in a day.....
ps- you will also notice a couple of those islands are out of froggys shadow re' sw and s swells...... And the top of the chain is fully open to e. ene. ne. n. nw. and believe it or not, WEST swells!!!!! Check that angle out next cyclone season ;)

mitchvg Wednesday, 9 Jul 2014 at 10:22 am new

Maybe I'll check it out right now! W swell into trades would be good.

mitchvg Wednesday, 9 Jul 2014 at 10:28 am new

Then again, what are the chances of getting a flight last minute when a TCs raging

Sheepdog Wednesday, 9 Jul 2014 at 10:31 am new

Next time you see a big grunty cyclone out east of ratshit, and sse of sudest, think about it..... Mind you, no huge fetch squeeze like the southern flank of a pacific cyclone, but still good swell ( similar to those WA cyclone swells....

Sheepdog Wednesday, 9 Jul 2014 at 10:35 am new

Well, good chance I reckon, if the cyclone isn't heading towards the destination.... If it's hovering around 13 s - 158 e and heading slowly ssw. Or something like that

mitchvg Friday, 1 Aug 2014 at 08:23 am new

Reading the courier mail and you wonder why serious journos are worried about the death of newspapers. Anyway this number you speak of... Are we talking a long shadow in the gulf country? Timor sea doesn't seem moist enough? Flatish high on aus. MJOs wigging out...

Sheepdog Friday, 1 Aug 2014 at 09:33 am new

Mitch.... You are waaaaaaay off....... not even warm ;) Think, man...... THINK!!!!!! ;)

mitchvg Friday, 1 Aug 2014 at 09:56 am new

mitchvg Friday, 1 Aug 2014 at 09:57 am new

Fuck see, I meant IOD not IDO haha

Sheepdog Friday, 1 Aug 2014 at 10:20 am new

Mate. Your head is full of iodine, improvised explosive devices and Protected Designation of Origins???? Jesus.....
The number I gave is not a red f*ckn herring ;)

mitchvg Friday, 1 Aug 2014 at 11:42 am new

Iodine....and sulphur?

mitchvg Friday, 1 Aug 2014 at 11:46 am new

Maybe not sulphr. Is there room for 2? Na?

Sheepdog Friday, 1 Aug 2014 at 12:13 pm new

There'd always be room for 2, mitch .... Btw, a while back in bloggers waves, you posted a photo of a brown Buchans bomb........ How big do you reckon the face of the wave was? I don't think it was 200cm.... But it was bigger than 150cm... If I was a perfectionist....hmmm.... I'd say...... 170.2389 cm.......

mitchvg Friday, 1 Aug 2014 at 12:43 pm new

Well. Looks can be deceiving! I've only seen Red Herring when it's cooking, just looks so tasty!

Hey there Mitch Verg Good, just reading above and picked up on the "Timor Sea not moist enough"...?
I've been out here for the last week, half way between Darwin and Dilli, the last 3 days we have had squally showers and it pissed down yesterday arvo for 3 or so hours.
Very unusal out here for this time of the year...? Does this have any influence of how maybe out East with the Easterly fetch of that high....?
Anyone, weather guru's...!

mitchvg Friday, 1 Aug 2014 at 01:01 pm new

Ah well there ya go, that's why I'm here. To learn. As far as I understand it...
- Moist surface air over the Timor Sea can be fed into the NW WA, by the NW flank of a H.
- This is then pushed upwards, by an advancing front to the W.
- When the moist air rises, it is captured in the upper W'ly winds and forms high cloud over Central Australia.
- As the moist and cold upper air reaches the east coast, it meets warm and moist air. This warm and moist air (trades)is being moved from the surface of the Coral Sea, and uplifted over the Great Dividing Range.
- This can then cause trough on land, to bomb into an ECL over water....

Craig Friday, 1 Aug 2014 at 01:14 pm new

Pretty spot on there Mitch, but that only happens when everything comes into line at once. But we've got that setup forming into next week with the easterlies feeding into a weak upper cold pool and inland surface trough. If the cold pool were deeper it'd almost be a certainty!

Sheepdog Friday, 1 Aug 2014 at 01:58 pm new

Mitch.... Have a real good look.... Diagonal....... Open...... Taken on different day...... Primo...... Grunt...... Heaps heavier than kippers on toast.......

Sheepdog Saturday, 20 Sep 2014 at 10:56 am new

Yeah mate cheers, watched the charts over the weekend and things have gone a bit bland for ACCESSG, but EC looks encouraging...

Sheepdog Monday, 22 Sep 2014 at 02:07 pm new

Don't hold your breath.... BTW, you once said you'd like to score "captain Cook" point....... Possibly a few little sliders there with this ridge.... Be lowgrade but fun nonetheless....

mitchvg Wednesday, 24 Sep 2014 at 10:10 pm new

Nah... ACCESS keeping a lid on things still, between NC and NZ also. I was a bit slow the other day, capt cook point :/ ... Been sick. I know now but.

Thanks to Davo too re reef. Can spend ages on those reefs on google maps, when zoomed right in... pretty funny you two, but after your story about "Doris" the staffer, I can't quite fully believe this til I see it... :P I might actually be moving back up there, so I'll definitely give the kiting a go. Geez I reckon I'd get more grief for trying to be a surfer than a kiter these days!

So did you work on the boats in SEQ? I assure you I'm not on the gear when I'm talking about dots of light and the 0369!
