I heart WOTD

The wave of the day does it for me big time. Nice work Steen Barnes , Shaun Anderson and Swellnet.
In one photo you've encompassed everything nice about surfing. If I was a wanker I'd say that it was perfect except for the fact he is in a wetsuit. Which it is , it's perfect .....except for the fact he's in a wetsuit.

Wonder where that spot is. Looks big and heavy and scary

Craig Wednesday, 8 Nov 2023 at 02:36 pm

Navionics shows up a couple of seriously deep water reefs south-west of Safi. Might be there..

tylerdurden Thursday, 9 Nov 2023 at 07:19 pm

Pretty sad about that guy, didn’t realise he was such a good surfer

tip-top1 Friday, 10 Nov 2023 at 05:48 am

agree tyler, i feel for his family and friends.

andy-mac Friday, 10 Nov 2023 at 03:56 pm

Ah man, just read article re Logan from yesterday's WOTD. Hadn't made connection. Tragic. Condolences to his family.

Sprout Tuesday, 14 Nov 2023 at 11:31 am

Our Sparks & Wildfire Service has unfortunately closed the area for 12 months thanks to it being obliterated by a bush fire. So maybe summer 2025.

Sprout Tuesday, 14 Nov 2023 at 03:24 pm

I've no idea where it is, I just meant generally, but yes the Sunshine Coast is also closed until forever.

*Oh right, not just a clever name.

velocityjohnno Tuesday, 14 Nov 2023 at 04:38 pm

Hopefully the bushfire causes a heap of blowout in the foredunes.

Safi in Morroco...prob the best right point in the world.

indo-dreaming Friday, 17 Nov 2023 at 06:42 am

Loved this wave when i lived in the area, when swell it was either Burleigh or the Alley, it gets so fun when sand is good especially the first section, anywhere else in Australia and it would be the main focus rather than take a back seat.

Its such an amazing piece of coast when you think about it four great points two of the best swell magnet peaky beachies at either end, and them miles of beachies that can have there day.

Its such a pity that its such a built up area with such a high population, imagine it in its natural state looking back at bush with far less people in the water.

That said many of the waves have been improved by man, but still.

Sometimes wondered about how this wave was tampered with, specifically the southern breakwall that connects the rocks to the land and allowed the sand to build up on Currumbin Beach. I've heard it said the breakwall ruined the wave but not really sure how.

After years of reduced sand flow - because of Tweed River breakwalls - can understand why the authorities might want to buld the breakwall, both to hold sand at Currumbin and train the creek mouth.

Prior to that there'd be times when water flowed between the rocks and the bank at the Alley was marginal.

Though clearly there'd also be times pre-breakwall when a salient would build up and connect the rocks with the lee side bank peeling.

Craig Friday, 17 Nov 2023 at 08:59 am

Very interesting Stu! Yeah looks like the break wall has definitely aided in providing and holding sand there between the rocks and coast.

freeride76 Friday, 17 Nov 2023 at 09:59 am

Would have been more like a Broken Head set-up back pre-break wall.

Less stable bank, but insane when slugs pushed through the gap or around the outside rock.

wally Friday, 17 Nov 2023 at 11:14 am

I had a holiday at Currumbin in late 1972 with a school mate’s family. I think the breakwater was built in 1973. I was 13 years old. One of my vivid memories is playing in the dunes on the Alley side, not too far from where the breakwater is now. We would run down some steep dunes which were steep enough to make the run a bit scary. The person down the bottom seemed a long way below. My guess is, the biggest dune had at least 15 foot elevation from top to bottom. Obviously, sand distribution varies a lot and you can’t draw much of a conclusion from this one anecdote. Just a pleasant old memory.

Super fun wave on it's day, spent a lot of time there.

Love these old aerial shots, yeah you would expect without the rock wall it would have had periods where it was gutted of sand.

Its amazing when you think of the Goldie and waves that man has improved.

D-bah, Superbank but at expensive of other waves, Kirra was improved with groynes, The alley, The Spit & South straddle

frog Saturday, 18 Nov 2023 at 06:54 am

TBB once did a full history of the Currumbin sand movements digging right back into old newspaper clippings. Quite radical changes from memory.

basesix Saturday, 18 Nov 2023 at 08:51 am

digging how much you like this tree, Craigo, the other shot was a little sharper but.

Craig Saturday, 18 Nov 2023 at 03:52 pm

Haha yeah I was shuffling right trying to get this inside barrel as the tree encroached from the left, hence not super sharp.

Roadkill Saturday, 18 Nov 2023 at 04:06 pm

Unintended bokeh can make or break a pic hey.

Craig. Nice shot. Eucalyptus obliqua - Messmate Stringybark.
It was the first Eucalyptus sp. described in Australia and it was in Tasmania. AW

freeride76 Sunday, 19 Nov 2023 at 09:52 am

I was in the water for that shot, looked nice from that angle.
Also looking back at the stringybarks.

Gods country.

"Haha yeah I was shuffling right trying to get this inside barrel as the tree encroached from the left, hence not super sharp."

Should clarify Craig, I was being a smart arse about the tree being in softer focus in the second shot. Great capture, I added both shots to my rolling swellnet screensaver file : )

Cant believe no one has commented on the Pavement quote, one of the best albums of all time, im tempted to go with Two states for current relevance, but i like this one better, love the lyrics just how they roll SM is such a unique song writer.

rooftop Monday, 27 Nov 2023 at 05:14 pm

Today's shot just reminded me of how amazing surfing is.

velocityjohnno Friday, 1 Dec 2023 at 10:07 am

WOTD today with Izzy doing that cut down layback is just insane, what a great angle and pic and she's ripping. Feels unreal to do that kind of turn too.

Solitude Monday, 4 Dec 2023 at 03:47 pm

Does it get any better than that? Left so pure - so much better without a surfer on it.
