Maybe because one was a spontaneous act of rage by an individual without any precedent by fellow ideologues that accounted for a single death , whilst the other was a premeditated and studiously designed mass murder that is the latest in a long , long string of incidents that account for THOUSANDS of death each year and is a global threat based on eradicating anyone that doesn't ascribe to a narrow set of religious dogma that offends everything that a civilised person should believe in.

@blowin, did you see 4corners last week on the rise of white nationalism in Germany? Made some valid points about people's natural concerns about so many immigrates flowing into the country but also highlighted concerns on the rise of white nationalism and neo nazis including the use of explosives and fire bombing refugee houses and those of their supporters. Interesting the local police were initially very slow to act and when charges were laid they were on the minor (misdemeanour) scale but eventually the national anti terrorism squad took over the cases and all offenders now face many decades behind bars for terrorism offences if proven guilty.

The thing is , if you or I was to have a frank discussion with any of our Honourable politicians , then they'd probably be a bit stunned to realise that what they're engaged in with these antics is fundamentally unacceptable to the general population.
I'm sure they're totally of the mind that the business they are in is to facilitate business and the Australian economy and therefore Australia receives a net benefit.
The fact that there is a larger issue such as sovereignty probably doesn't cross their minds .
Or if it does then the smiling faces fronting the charm offensive that is the Chinese soft power program are just so damn personable and human that they can't see the genuine harm.
That's basically how the LNP can look in the mirror each day anyway , but on this occasion it relates to both parties.
Either that or I'm being way too generous and they actually are the self interested rodents scurrying from the light that most suspect them to be.
