I saw this interpretation of the Burke and Wills legend at the MONA Gallery in Hobart last month. It’s a bit of a shocker.......

Robert Fielding is a mate of my brothers from Mimili ... his work literally stretches far and wide, from Pipilynjarra to Marla in the north of SA, spread across the APY lands.
I'm going to meet the dude and check out a bunch of his car works in person soon when I go visit my bro who lives up there.

Your move.

Bought this original ‘in the barrel’ self portrait of local Yorke Peninsula surf artist Jason ‘Miff’ Swales a couple of months ago.
He’s actually been on an east coast road trip with the family for the last few months doing the markets in Nth NSW and Queensland.

GuySmiley Tuesday, 10 Dec 2019 at 05:56 pm new

Facto, we all know that Scotty from Marketing shat his pants at Maccas but he has a wife, you know. You know what she's called. She's called incontinentia, Incontinentia Buttocks.

Great link Dale-Cooper. I gave Brownie a disc of photos of him from a surf session about 20 years ago. He said "thanks, what the fuck is it?".
Now Gash is producing amazing video content. I suspect Brownie might have called in a young freelancer to do the production!!!!

Vic Local Saturday, 9 May 2020 at 09:19 am new

Ah very good Guysmiley. Palin at his finest.

Dale -Cooper Thursday, 14 May 2020 at 12:14 pm new

An interview with Buttonshaw re: above, you say Stu?

Cool.

As cool if not cooler would be one with Greg Brown about all manner of things. He's an interesting character to say the least.

stunet Thursday, 14 May 2020 at 12:17 pm new

Arty, abstract, and even angry, Simon isn't short of things to say.

Dale -Cooper Thursday, 14 May 2020 at 12:29 pm new

Looking forward to it.

Cheers for that link Dale. That was so good. Found myself almost in a trance watching it. What incredible talent across the board (excuse the pun).

Never seen that T-shirt before either "Nat's Splat and that's that". Classic.

indo-dreaming Sunday, 28 Jun 2020 at 05:08 pm new

This weekend was my first attempt at doing a painting in about 15 years, it's a decent size 1m x 1.2m just acrylic.

Not completely happy with it but i guess okay for first attempt in that long, plus i literally just threw it together was more the process than the result this time getting the feel to paint again back.

Also started some other more abstract ones and been collecting canvases from OP shops etc, so might start doing a few more

Same spot as WOTD?

Nice effort Indo

indo-dreaming Sunday, 5 Jul 2020 at 03:36 pm new

Finished another painting (technically two) today (not surfing though)

Just hung them on the wall (need paintings on my wall hence motivation to paint)

Siamese fighting fish, suppose to be in a fight, im not sure what the style is, i wanted it to have an Asian feel, but also kind of graffiti/tattoo type vibe (hence the background colours and drips, they are on purpose)

Acrylic again with white Posca, was going to add black Posca too, but i will probably fk it up, so decided to play it safe and just leave it as it is.

Having a creative outlet is great Indo, keep up the good work.

At the start of this year I recommenced oil painting. I've been getting lessons from an award winning Australian artist and have spent most of the year on the alchemy of colour theory and the neutral greys of Australian seascapes and landscapes. It has been a revelation.

factotum Sunday, 5 Jul 2020 at 05:53 pm new

And yet you paint yourself as such a dumb cunt Info.

Nirvana's In Bloom lyrics personified.

Amasing.

What's your disconnect problem, comrade?

AndyM Sunday, 5 Jul 2020 at 06:07 pm new

Nice one Indo.

Eugene Green Sunday, 5 Jul 2020 at 10:41 pm new

That tube view painting is really cool.

indo-dreaming Monday, 6 Jul 2020 at 08:26 am new

Thank guys.

@ Guy Nice you will have to post some here, ive always wanted to do some oils but never used them, expect things are a bit harder/slower needing to wait much longer for things to dry, they do look good though especially for that classic landscape look.

Congratulations to Vincent Namatjira on winning this year’s Archibald Prize with his portrait of Adam Goodes, 'Stand strong for who you are'!

"We share some similar stories and experiences – of disconnection from culture, language and Country, and the constant pressures of being an Aboriginal man in this country. When I was younger and growing up in the foster system in Perth, Indigenous footballers were like heroes to me. Goodesy is much more than a great footballer though, he took a strong stand against racism and said, “enough is enough”. I stand strong with you too, brother."

GuySmiley Friday, 25 Sep 2020 at 06:17 pm new

No disrespect to the artist or his painting but this decision is further demonstration that the Archibald Prize is never about the best portrait painting, you be the judge IMO 80% of this years finalists wouldn’t be better that a 1st year art student’s best attempt.....

https://www.artgallery.nsw.gov.au/prizes/archibald/2020/

For me Julie Fragar’s Richard is hands down the best .....

According to you and your tastes, Guy? Informed, no doubt!

Know anything of, I dunno, off the top of my head, Whiteley's winners? Shead's? Cullen's? Let alone Dobell's?

Deep vein.

zenagain Friday, 25 Sep 2020 at 06:28 pm new

Whitely? That old junkie. Love his work.

I love the NSW art gallery- you can see a Whitely 10 metres away from an Arthur Streeton.

The restaurant is killer too if a little pricey.

AndyM Friday, 25 Sep 2020 at 06:31 pm new

Where politics triumphs over art Guy?

factotum Friday, 25 Sep 2020 at 06:35 pm new

Andy, best keep to embarrassing yourself with Blowfly.

Talking 'bout politics, how's your campaign with Bugs going?

GuySmiley Friday, 25 Sep 2020 at 06:57 pm new

Good one Facto, the rot started along time ago, some would argue it started with the Dobell. Informed? Why do I need to be informed it has never stopped anyone else commenting here :) but maybe I just took to much notice of Sir Les Patterson or perhaps it’s the discussions I have had on the topic with my art teacher who has studied at the Florence Academy.

Arthur Streeton, arguably the best Australian landscape artist

Andy I reckon the Archibalds are less about politics and more about courting controversy

....... but hey it’s only my opinion, you’re welcome to your own

AndyM Friday, 25 Sep 2020 at 06:58 pm new

Bugs?

Umm, sure.

zenagain Friday, 25 Sep 2020 at 08:00 pm new

Have to agree with you there Guy- that Julie Fragar portrait is awesome. Equal second for me would be the Craig Ruddy and the Tianli Zu. Those three speak to me. I'm not a judge though. When it comes to art I just knows what I like.

GuySmiley Friday, 25 Sep 2020 at 08:54 pm new

It is said tone does all the work and colour gets all the glory. There are 9 main tones between white and black before you consider the 1/2 and 1/4 tones. The greats master all full, 1/2 and 1/4 tones. That Fragar painting is a beautiful study in tone. The lightest light and the darkest dark meet in Richard’s left eye just where the artist is directing your attention, brilliant.

GuySmiley Friday, 25 Sep 2020 at 08:53 pm new

^^

factotum Friday, 25 Sep 2020 at 09:29 pm new

"Those [three] speak to me."

In a nutshell.

One's Streeton is another's Fred Williams or John Olsen?

But Rover Thomas (the real deal)?

Dobell, Whiteley, Shead, Cullen. Archibald winners.

"1st year art student’s best attempts", hey?

Purely political winners? What kind?

zenagain Friday, 25 Sep 2020 at 10:20 pm new

They're all awesome. In particular the top one- love it. It's true, all in the eye of the beholder.

But if I was to judge the 2020 winners, the three I mentioned earlier were my fav's regardless of the politics (real or perceived).

A few years ago, did a bit of a cultural tour of Europe and not knowing much about art in general was in awe at every place we visited- The National Gallery, V&A, Tate Modern, The British in London. Then on to Paris, The Louvre, Musee d'Orsay, and another one I can't remember but it was amazing and then we finished at the Prada in Madrid. My wife is the expert and seems to know everything and anything about hundreds of works and is just a fountain of knowledge.

I gave her the shits though cause we weren't moving fast enough- I'd be dawdling along and something would catch my eye and I'd take ages just staring at it, walking closer and back out again, soaking up every detail. I'm in awe of how humans can create such beautiful objects with just their heads, hands and hearts.
