"It is a chance though for natural selection to work its magic"
Unfortunately fliplid, this virus won't discriminate between the idiots and the many fine people in the USA. Those fuckwit protestors will end up infecting others and then end up at hospitals (despite their hatred of socialist medical systems) infecting doctors and nurses.
I'm tipping the "natural selection" will end up whacking the poor and the old in the USA, and not the morons driving enormous pick up trucks and protesting about lock downs. I've said it before, the best thing that could happen for the USA at this point in time, is for Trump to get the virus and die. That might get the fuckwits back inside and give the US a slim chance of sane leadership.

GuySmiley Monday, 20 Apr 2020 at 05:17 pm new

"Xi views all former peoples from his country who have migrated as being firstly loyal to the motherland - whether they like it or not".

Exactly, and that is why it must not be business as usual with China after this. We / the world must negotiate each and every relationship or we will all be fucked soon enough.

indo-dreaming Monday, 20 Apr 2020 at 05:45 pm new

Trumps done a pretty shit job with this virus, the USA numbers are out of control.

However that said

When you compare the per one million total stats (just the main countries) there are countries much worse.

Spain 4,249
Belgium 3,322
Switzerland 3,205
Ireland 3,089
Italy 2,960
France 2,342
USA 2,309

NZ 299
Aust 260
China 57*

And the total deaths per one million

Belgium 490
Spain 437
Italy 391
France 302
Uk 237
Netherlands 215
Sweden 152
Switzerland 161
Ireland 124
USA 123

China 3*
Aust 3 (just ticked over from 2 in the last few days)
NZ 2

* China stats highly unlikely to be true (no racism intended, i like Chinese people)

From today: https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

BTW. Most likely by this time tomorrow Indonesia and Singapore will pass Australia in number of cases.

Vic Local Monday, 20 Apr 2020 at 05:55 pm new

But Trump said the USA had the best figures in the world with the exception of maybe Germany. And the thing about those figures is, all the countries with a higher per person rates are all getting on top of things. The USA is going full steam ahead towards the cliff. What a dangerous clown.

Cromwell Monday, 20 Apr 2020 at 05:55 pm new

frog there is no doubt that China intends to be, if it is not already, the most dominant power globally. I don’t know why people expect them to act more ethically than previous global powers. The history of European powers is one of gross exploitation, intimidation and invasion. Do you think China has forgotten the Opium trade and other humiliations it experienced at European hands? History ain’t over. The role of minor powers has always been to find a way to maintain their independence and that is why it is so important to understand China and not allow irrational fears to influence the relationship. Whether you like it or not, for the foreseeable future, we need China far more than China needs us.

Vic Local Monday, 20 Apr 2020 at 05:57 pm new

Steady on there Cromwell: it's China = bad. Aussie = good. Don't go confusing people with a nuanced discussion.

indo-dreaming Monday, 20 Apr 2020 at 05:58 pm new

The weird thing is African countries are the ones that are doing the best both case wise and death wise per 1 million people.

Maybe there is a factor of not enough testing?

indo-dreaming Monday, 20 Apr 2020 at 06:03 pm new

BTW. Blindboy, how did you go with those fires?...all good i hope.

Cromwell Monday, 20 Apr 2020 at 06:24 pm new

Yeh Indo we live right in town so we were never directly threatened. A couple of months of breathing smoke and avoiding outdoor activities was a bit rough and having the town frequently completely cut off was a bit of a worry but compared to what happened to so many people in the local area we had nothing to complain about. We were saying the other day that it trained us up for this period of isolation. Some truth in that for sure. I saw that you asked about my welfare at the time and asked Stu to post that I was OK. Thanks for your concern, Very much appreciated.

velocityjohnno Monday, 20 Apr 2020 at 06:25 pm new

Geez, Belgium got hit pretty hard.

velocityjohnno Monday, 20 Apr 2020 at 06:27 pm new

"Exactly, and that is why it must not be business as usual with China after this. We / the world must negotiate each and every relationship or we will all be fucked soon enough."

GS that is where everything is headed.

Blowin Monday, 20 Apr 2020 at 06:42 pm new

Wait a minute.....so you fully expect China to impose gross exploitation, intimidation and invasion but you think any fear of China is irrational ?

Even better is that you think we deserve it because China was “ humiliated “ hundreds of years ago .

No mention of the West saving their sorry and useless arse in WW2 or the fact that it took our money and way of life to lift them out of poverty ?

China is dependent on the rest of the world for food , energy , water and business. China needs the world , the world doesn’t need China. Dominant global power .....China can’t even police the Taiwan strait.

You are right about one thing. History isn’t over. The reparations for plaguing the world will cripple China.

China is surrounded by enemies. China is a global pariah. Xi’s hubris will lead to the deaths of millions.

Virgin Australia gone into administration.

Please tell me why the Australian government doesn’t just buy the whole thing. Market cap is $726M. Interest rates are the lowest in world history. A domestic airline is an essential industry.

Complete workforce ready to go.

dazzler Tuesday, 21 Apr 2020 at 09:48 am new

Because it comes with $5bn debt with no primary exit & limited secondary exit by way of forced sales planes in a depressed market.

Michael West has an excellent article detailing why the government should buy Virgin Australia (and not bail it out). The article was written three weeks ago, but is even more relevant now that all of the major shareholders have declined to assist and the company is now in voluntary administration.

https://www.michaelwest.com.au/virgin-australia-buy-the-business-dont-b…

dinnerdish Tuesday, 21 Apr 2020 at 12:14 pm new

Cant have a chinese company buying Virgin ...what a horror story that would be
Check this out just more about the virus..

I focus Tuesday, 21 Apr 2020 at 01:09 pm new

Airlines are too hard, they chew through massive amounts of capital and are high risk, Virgin lease all their aircraft and without cash flow for the foreseeable future (and who knows what the future holds) would send a small country bankrupt.

Lower risk path (not the cheapest) is too let them fold prop up Qantas and then provide incentive for second entrant when ready.

channel-bottom Tuesday, 21 Apr 2020 at 02:01 pm new

Ben - Thanks for the Michael West link. I rate him as the best corporate business journalist around.

thermalben Tuesday, 21 Apr 2020 at 02:03 pm new

It's because he's a communist isn't it Indo? :)

indo-dreaming Tuesday, 21 Apr 2020 at 04:00 pm new

I would have just said because he comes across as a socialist, but wouldn't surprise me if he was pro communism too.

Fliplid Tuesday, 21 Apr 2020 at 04:10 pm new

Most of what he does is highlight how multi nationals get around paying a fair share of tax and shines a light on all the backroom deals that are against the community interest. Not a socialist, just asking for fair play for all

Actually to be fair just looking at his website and top 40 tax dodger articles, and just skimmed over one and it is quite good as goes into depth on things.

My criticism in the past is articles that are kind of vague and just say blah blah doesn't pay tax but fails to explain why or mention that they still paid millions in royalties etc

@Westofthelake

My brother inlay is Kiwi, his family cant stand her either.

I prefer this article:

"Jacinda's broken promises: New Zealand PM is loved on the global stage but she's never as unpopular back home - as experts brand her 'show pony who is not delivering'

Jacinda Ardern is being criticised on home soil for failing to deliver on promises
She and her party are currently preparing for the September 19, 2020 election
There have been multiple policies that she has not yet achieved during her term

Jacinda Ardern may be the darling of political progressives in Australia and beyond, but as the New Zealand Prime Minister prepares to get into election mode at home, she finds herself under fire for failing to deliver on her promises."

You know a lot about NZ politics yeah?
The labour govt inherited 10 years of national looking after the top end of town. At least she's trying to fix some of the carnage she inherited. Cant be done in one term bud.

No shame in Elsa using anal beads VJ - she has needs and desires just like the rest of us.

boykee Tuesday, 21 Apr 2020 at 06:42 pm new

My main issue with her is she has never had a real job. Along with the rest of her socialist cronies, they have come straight from political degrees to government support roles to politics. She certainly does come across as very genuine When speaking though.
Most working class folks in my neck of the woods can’t stand her
Cheers

So we have Virgin in voluntary administration?
Savvy business readers, do Qantas have a similar or a different business model?

Westofthelake Tuesday, 21 Apr 2020 at 07:45 pm new

Good one syppo. Living Legend that Captain Tom.

vj, certainly not a business reader or savvy but I think in terms of 'business model' the difference between Qantas and Virgin is about 80 years of operation. Funfact: Qantas is 100 years old this November.

Meanwhile, if you're paying more than a $1 a litre for fuel you are being rorted. (Currently $0.93/l here)

Now at minus $37 a barrel.
