Yeh Indo we live right in town so we were never directly threatened. A couple of months of breathing smoke and avoiding outdoor activities was a bit rough and having the town frequently completely cut off was a bit of a worry but compared to what happened to so many people in the local area we had nothing to complain about. Airlines are too hard, they chew through massive amounts of capital and are high risk, Virgin lease all their aircraft and without cash flow for the foreseeable future (and who knows what the future holds) would send a small country bankrupt.
Lower risk path (not the cheapest) is too let them fold prop up Qantas and then provide incentive for second entrant when ready.

vj, certainly not a business reader or savvy but I think in terms of 'business model' the difference between Qantas and Virgin is about 80 years of operation. Funfact: Qantas is 100 years old this November.
