Closed the lid on the lappy late yesterday arvo and raced over to the point with wetsuit, fins, net bag, and a screwdriver. Last weekend's enquiry about urchins got me inspired to grab some echinoderms for myself.
Full moon low tide made for easy entry and a short swim to a section of the reef I knew had urchins - knew it all too well, there's still a number of 'em in my right foot.
Only took a few minutes of diving and I'd bagged four big bastards.
Set myself up to cut the shell and scrape their insides, but it was even messier than planned. Not easy to separate the yellow roe from the messy innards.
Shoulda got 20 pieces but salvaged 13.
Split them with the wife, first with a drop of soy sauce, then many drops to mask the taste which is a brutal mix of salt and an uncertain sweetness. But mainly salt. It's intense.
Probably won't be rushing out to get more kina anytime soon, though there's four less on the shelf to tread on.
How do you reckon they'd go with some wasabi?

For some reason we didn't even think of wasabi. It's got a strong flavour that has to be countered.
Next time I do it will be with fresh rice, some soy, and wasabi.
totally- light soy, not the heavy black stuff, little wasabi and rice. plus Shisa if you can get, it's Japanese basil and has a really unique taste.

In the past when I lived at P.I.,I would regularly dive for abalone and at the right times also pickup a few urchins and spear a couple of fish.Sashimi abalone, urchin sushi and grilled fish, the wife was in heaven and the brownie points I accumulated were huge.
For sushi : Make a small cylinder with Nori seaweed, stick the overlap with a couple of grains of warm cooked rice,(great glue) nearly fill the cylinder with sushi rice and top with urchin row.The seaweed mellows the urchin, the combo is amazing. Always a little light soy (don't drown it) and wasabi.
Fiz 21 been there more times than I remember, worse when with indigenous friends when they decide to stick up for you then it can get really ugly if you dont calm things down.
Usually alcohol is involved bit like Blowins drinking rants on Swellnet unlike Blowin rarely happens when people are sober ;-)
I have never taken it to heart (same as Blowins behavior.........gee never realized how good a reference to Blowin is so helpful) as there is far more than the obvious going on plus in terms of advantage between myself and the abusers its night and day.

@I focus, it actually didn't phase me too much, it was all the language and aggression in front of the kids that pissed me off the most. I knew they were "long grassers" and they were claiming it was their "country". But I personally know the three families that are the TO's for that country that live in the reserve. And when I challenged them on this, that's when it went off tap. Pretty typical behaviour of those that have been kicked out by family/tribe/community. We ended up packing up and going further up the beach. Don't need that sort of shit on a beautiful day.

It’s also important to officially disprove the politically motivated falsehood that Caucasians aren’t subject to racism and hate crimes. Hiding or denying this fact only allows hate crime to be perpetuated when it should be rejected and opposed at every turn.

As someone who has been the innocent recipient of this kind of behaviour several times , it is particularly important to myself that crimes of this nature are not swept under the carpet because they may make some people feel uncomfortable. It was a sad event that happened many years ago, and was covered adequately in all the major news outlets. That website is attempting to legitimise race hate, and one of its means is to show hate crimes, which sounds fair enough till you realise they only cover one side of the issue, so it's hardly a partial outlet.
A quick scan reveals it's true motives and it has no place on our site.

It’s the only reporting of the incident that I can see that truly acknowledges that it was a racially motivated hate crime. That is the pertinent fact that the msm cannot bring themselves to report and this lack of reporting leads some to believe that anti-white hate crimes don’t exist in Australia.
There has been several posters in this very thread who have said as much or attempted to downplay the severity of any crimes. Even worse is when they try to justify such heinous acts with talk of asymmetry of power or some such guff.
As I said , I’ve had the horror of being in similar situations several times. It’s offensive to myself to be forced to pretend that such things don’t occur.
Find me another report which details the motivation for the attack - racial hatred - and I’ll gladly take it down.
