"choose whatever facts you want to believe"

Jesus, we ain't that post truth are we?

"COVID-19 ... appears to be slightly more infectious than the flu (R0 2.8 vs. 1.28)

That word "appears" may end up being significant.

we'll see.

freeride76 Friday, 6 Mar 2020 at 02:43 pm new

Already got an OS trip booked and paid for.
no intention of cancelling.

stunet Friday, 6 Mar 2020 at 02:44 pm new

What were you doing checking G'Land prices??

Blowin Friday, 6 Mar 2020 at 02:57 pm new

Freeride....you believe the facts aka the numbers coming out of China , Thailand, Indo etc ?

How do you assess risk ? I reckon you’ve got the belief that it’s so unrealistic that it’s basically abstract. Tell me ....your chances of getting AIDs are probably the same. Would You go bareback amongst a selection of African hookers ?

freeride76 Friday, 6 Mar 2020 at 02:59 pm new

Blowin I got 47 cases in Thailand, 2 in Indo.

that what you got?

Blowin Friday, 6 Mar 2020 at 03:00 pm new

Here you go , Freeride.

Double or nothing.....that 6 pack turns into a half carton if you cant still say it doesn’t phase you by the start of May. If you can get on here and say that it’s “ just a flu, bro “ by then with a straight face then the slate is totally clean and I’ll trumpet to the world just how prescient you are.

What do you reckon ?

Blowin Friday, 6 Mar 2020 at 03:05 pm new

47 cases in Thailand they say....despite no testing, leaving the borders open to China and a fella from Oz goes on holiday there for ten days and catches it....either that fella is very, very, very unlucky or Thailand is actually a 2nd world military ruled nation with a penchant for mistruth .

Thailand : little Coronavirus.....but a very coincidental upswing in unnamed pneumonia ( fatal )

that sounds fairy nuts.

I was just at Brisbane Intl airport this morning picking up father in law from UK.

saw 2 people wearing masks.

lady at coffee shop said airport was quiet but there was zero pandemic vibe.

freeride76 Friday, 6 Mar 2020 at 03:05 pm new

yeah. I'm not sure I trust either Thailand or Indo for figures.

still, if it's bad and they have fudged the numbers dead people will be piling up the morgues very, very quickly.

thats hard to hide.

stunet Friday, 6 Mar 2020 at 03:16 pm new

@Blowin,

'Second World' doesn't mean a country somewhere between the developed First World countries and poor, unindustrialised Third World countries, it refers to the Communist countries pre-glasnost.

It's not used anymore now the Cold War has ended, nor is First World and Third World for that matter, but simply Developed and Less Developed Countries.

Capiche..?

OK then, carry on.

kristine keneally finally found a positive way to contribute to society? ...after god knows how many years sucking from the public purse

"...Keneally will release new figures showing that since the government allowed the online lodgement of tourist visas for Chinese nationals, there has been an almost 700% increase in the number of people arriving by air from China and claiming asylum.""

...is this arrangement just for chinese? ...sounds a bit racist...

"...In the 12 months after online lodgement was introduced, from March 2017 to February 2018, 7,304 Chinese nationals on tourist visas made claims for asylum compared to just 1,060 in the 12 months prior.

From February 2017 to September 2019, the total number of Chinese nationals to have claimed asylum is 13,462."

"...Keneally said the surge was contributing to the system being overloaded by often spurious claims, with about 90% of the 100,000 airplane arrivals who have claimed asylum in the past five years found to be unmeritorious."

...90% ...sounds like one he'll of a 'loophole'

"“This is not an issue of a person’s nationality – it is about the integrity of our migration system – and an insight into how backlogs have grown so quickly,” according to a draft copy of Keneally’s speech."'

...labor finally worked out to talk about stuff?!

“Claiming asylum is an important right that we need to uphold, and you play a vital role in supporting that right. But an overloaded system that discourages or delays genuine claims disadvantages all asylum claims.”

Keneally also warned that with an increased number of people on bridging visas, the backlog leads to a growing “honeypot” for people smugglers who facilitate travel to Australia for the specific purpose of having an extended stay in our country, often to access the labour market."

... "honeypot", "people smugglers", very familiar sounding language... pot, kettle, black?, ...But I'll take it... go kenneally!

“...As that continues, along with the wilful ignorance on the part of the government, the exploitation of these vulnerable people – a developing economic underclass – will only continue to grow.

“Plain and simple – this is a work scam.”"

fucking scam indeed!!!

loving the new 'language' labor!

Stu....How would you describe a nation that’s obviously not first world , yet neither is it a total Stone Age shithole ?

And then take that descriptor and apply it to Thailand and you’ll get what I’m trying to say.

Sypkan.....yeah , all well and good with KK till you realise that she isn’t just trying to end temporary visas and those rorting the asylum claims , she’s trying to get them ALL made permanent. She’s even worse than the LNP when it comes to pushing down wages through excess labour supply.

Id still be more worried about getting dengue fever in Bali about 5,000 cases last year and 5 people died in Bali alone of dengue.

In just over one month in Indonesia last Jan-feb 176 people died of dengue fever
https://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2019/02/06/dengue-death-toll-rises-…

And last year in Indonesia there was about 111,000 cases of dengue fever in Indonesia (can't find number of deaths but you can imagine in the hundreds possibly pushed over 1,000)

And dengue can be anywhere mostly city, towns, villages, but also remote areas.

Or if you ride a motorbike in Bali you chances of ending up in hospital are even higher.

Blowin Friday, 6 Mar 2020 at 03:52 pm new

OK ....let’s hear it then from the doubters.

What’s the real story ? You reckon Xi Jinping and the CCP are just fear mongering ? Making it up for laughs ? Is Wuhan still totally locking down its 11 million people cause it’s an all-time prank or because the Chinese are panic mongers ?

You reckon that South Korea is jumping the gun and it’s all a big conspiracy to bring down the Australian tourism sector ?

Ignore the media for a minute . Why has Apple shut down their factories that make 98 percent of the iPhones ? Why has Kia shut down a 400 hectare car plant ?

Because they’re more concerned about spreading a runny nose amongst their workers than they are about owning a viable business or making a profit ?

Why has Australia shut down it’s ( supposed ) 3rd largest industry - tertiary education ?

What’s the angle ? Is everyone in on the joke ? You reckon the US military has quarantined its bases in South Korea cause they’re afraid of the man flu ?

Perhaps you fellas have a theory ? I’d sure like to hear it.

freeride76 Friday, 6 Mar 2020 at 03:52 pm new

yeah, dengue worries me way more.
already had it once which means future infections are far more dangerous.

Blowin said something a few pages back relating to global warming basically saying because it couldn't be seen people were less inclined to believe it and making the point that if the dead bodies don't start piling up people will be calling hoax on coronavirus.

at what point would that be?

Go have a read about the Spanish flu and how it really took a year or two to weave it’s magic.

As I said before , I reckon Australia will really feel this in May / June with our first real wave. I think that the warm weather makes it hard to spread.

It seems like most in the Southern Hemisphere have caught it inside. That’s why Singapore- a country you can rely on for a bit of truth - had an outbreak but they managed to contain it ....because it was predominantly spread in office blocks with their cool , dry air environment. I reckon it doesn’t spread well in heat or humidity.

Next years Northern Hemisphere autumn/ winter is when shit should get real crazy if they haven’t got a vaccine by then . Then next winter in Oz will be hard for us.

https://www.smh.com.au/national/deadly-and-disruptive-flu-outbreak-in-1…

Thing with the Spanish flu , like all diseases including this one I suppose , is that the devastation isn’t evenly spread around the globe. And I still reckon that race has some determination on severity.

When the virus hit Sydney it was the last thing we expected
When the infection reached to Gladesville we tried to tame it
When the bodies piled up at Pyermont it suddenly dawned on us all
Ha ...finally the world was silent and the door was shut

Now this is some prescience

stunet Friday, 6 Mar 2020 at 04:00 pm new

@Blowin,

Like the people who reacted to the coronavirus by buying, not food, not water, but a B-double's worth of bog paper, and the human behavioural experts who explained that as punters trying to take control of a situation that's rapidly descending.

So when someone gives an incorrect definition of an outdated socio-political term on an endlessly digressing forum, I have to regain control by pulling that person up, winding the conversation back ten pages, explaining how it was wrong, and then correcting them on its proper usage.

I'm sure you can understand that.

Blowin Friday, 6 Mar 2020 at 04:04 pm new

Fully understand and appreciate it . I was hoping you’d have a pulled a replacement term for me from the same well of knowledge.

I pictured you as a guy who was all about solutions instead of problems. Give a guy a hand here .

stunet Friday, 6 Mar 2020 at 04:06 pm new

thermalben Friday, 6 Mar 2020 at 04:23 pm new

Really? Is there actual evidence of this, or is it just from the rumour mill?

Freight costs for toilet paper would be quite considerable (cubic weight). To send meaningful quantities you'd have to arrange pallets of 'em to be freighted.

Is that really the case?

Blowin Friday, 6 Mar 2020 at 04:34 pm new

Simba...I went to the trouble of getting my motorbike licence when I was stuck on East coast Oz during January. Quite an expensive fuck around. Booked my return Indo ticket a couple of days after my practical test was booked and then I had to do the theory at the roads authority ( $47 per attempt ! Fucked if I know how young crew can afford to fail that a couple of times ! ) .

All sorted, had my L plates , then go to get my International licence amended to include motorbikes and they say I can’t ride overseas with L’s .

Fuck it...just rode around anyway . Love the bikes , but I’m no fan of the danger. I know more people who’ve had negative life altering experiences on Indo bikes than almost every other life hazard combined.

I saw the 50cc limit on the insurance papers but I’ve never seen a 50cc bike in Indo.

sypkan Friday, 6 Mar 2020 at 04:36 pm new

KK. yeh, I still have no faith - her or her team, I know she's just political point scoring... but I appreciate the developments (evolution even!!) in language...

and I appreciate the alp at least trying to call out smoko and co. on the glaringly obvious joke their 'border control' system has become.

they're almost looking as pathetic as rudd's little loss of control

...actually it's kinda worse, because all they do is rattle on about strong borders, and here they are, getting taken for a ride just as much as labor did. whilst being in flat out denial ...just like labor did...

denpassar. not really surfing, just passing through. been through a few times in the last few months. getting a few wave days here and there, but no serious mission

I probably wouldn't be here if I hadn't made prior commitments

interesting though, went to ulu's temple a month or so ago, first time in a long time, place was overrun with chinese, buses with chinese letters, selfy sticks, masks, whole kit and cabbodle, so many! couldn't believe it. now seeing very few around. baliwaves man mentioned the same a few days ago

simba Friday, 6 Mar 2020 at 04:31 pm new

Blowin Friday, 6 Mar 2020 at 04:32 pm new

indo-dreaming Friday, 6 Mar 2020 at 04:37 pm new

Do Chinese mostly use water or toilet paper?

Google didn't help that much but im guessing most would use water with toilet paper maybe used more by upper class from the western influence.

But im just making a assumption here.

But that said even if a small percentage used toilet paper with their crazy population that would still be huge and more well off ones would have links to other Chinese overseas, so it could be a thing.

But agree with Stunets comments

Had my annual checkup today, darn back on the rabbit food! My GP tells me the CV would be widespread throughout the world, offical numbers would be a fraction of current cases given testing has been so limited. He says in most cases it presents as a mild cold or flu but not for the elderly with existing health issues.

etarip Friday, 6 Mar 2020 at 05:38 pm new

Hey FR, just trying to work out what your question / issue is on CV? You seem to be questioning the seriousness of it? Mortality rate is significantly higher than common flu, albeit concentrated in elderly and pre-conditions. No vaccine or treatment at the moment. And reporting in countries like Indonesia and Thailand is low, but this could be due to self-interest or limited capacity. I’m not an alarmist, definitely not stockpiling poo tickets, but I think the picture is going to get a lot worse before it gets better, if for no better reason than better reporting and retrospective analysis. What’s your position / assessment?
BTW: wearing a mask is only recommended if you have, or suspect you have, COVID19 or other flu like symptoms.

Blowin Friday, 6 Mar 2020 at 05:46 pm new
