Burleigh I'm not putting forward any opinions of mine but I'm genuinely wondering what you see Trump achieving as president.
And no, that's not a loaded question.
Actually, I will put forward an opinion - the whole system needs a shakeup and Trump could be seen as playing a part in that.
I'm persuaded by the Slovenian philosopher Slavoj Žižek, who a few years ago wrote that in America you can either have Make America Great Again or you can have Make Oligarchic America Great Again depending on your party of choice.
The Democrats are a hoax and a sellout to the working class, and no amount of talk of abortion and transgender rights and racism can cover this anymore.
The Left and the Democrats have a large rift a.k.a a class struggle in progress.
And Trump was one of the catalysts for this.
My hope is that if Trump gets back in, this will speed up and finalise this cultural/ideological/economic struggle and a real Left will emerge.
Without this radicalising effect, I see that the New Left will continue to wallow in the trappings of woke politics and continue to get steamrolled by neoliberalism.
And until the Left around the world wakes up, we'll continue to get fucked around by populists and demagogues.

An interesting perspective i heard the other day was that the Occupy Wall St movement scared the elites - the top 1% - a lot. Pitchfork and torch dreams spoiled their self assurance.
The focus of many groups and even some celebrities was firmly on the inequity, greed and grift / theft from the Wall St and political elite.
The response was divide and conquer. Create fractures in society so the serfs were too busy fighting each other to look up at the super rich ruling class (club / network). Racism, gender, BLM, left / right, wokey wokey weirdness all emerged as much bigger issues than ever before. Turbocharged by media owned by key club members.
Worked a treat.
But it has contributed to the US moving into semi chaotic decline and weakened social cohesion.

That was a very interesting post frog, and it explains the feeling we might have that the politics of a nation doesn't run in the interest of the lay people living in a nation.
It was about what a polling group found:
"While doing their two weekly national surveys, Rasmussen and his team noticed an anomaly. Out of every 1,000 or so respondents, there would always be three or four who were far more radical than everyone else. After several months of finding these unusual responses, Rasmussen realized they all shared three characteristics.
The radical responses came from people who had graduate degrees (not just graduate studies), family incomes above $150,000 a year, and lived in large cities (more than 10,000 people per zip code).
When Rasmussen aggregated the responses from more than 20 surveys, he realized these people made up a unique elite 1 percent.
He then did a national survey of only people with these characteristics – and found some astonishing results. He briefed me and our team on the findings – and joined me on Newt’s World to talk about it further.
When all other voters gave President Joe Biden a 41 percent job approval, the elite 1 percent rated him at 82 percent approval.
The elite 1 percent are surprisingly young. Sixty-seven percent are between 35 and 54 years old. They are 86 percent white. Almost half of them (47 percent) favor “Sanders-like policies.” They are overwhelmingly Democrats (73 percent).
The gap between the elite 1 percent and the rest of America is startling. While 57 percent of all voters say there is not enough individual freedom in America, 47 percent of the elite 1 percent say there is too much freedom. If you ask the section of the group that is politically obsessed (people who talk politics every day), 69 percent say there is too much individual freedom in America.
Given this, it’s not surprising that the elite 1 percent have great faith in government. Some 70 percent trust government to do the right thing most of the time.
Rasmussen said that this project has revealed the scariest single polling number he has seen in nearly 35 years of studying popular opinion. According to his data, 35 percent of the elite 1 percent (and 69 percent of the politically obsessed elite 1 percent) said they would rather cheat than lose a close election. Among average Americans, 93 percent reject cheating and accept defeat in an honest election. Only 7 percent reported they would cheat."
To the question of whether your would believe that, would you believe that particular polling group, have they a good, long term record in political polling? I don't know but I've heard the name.
Prior to our Voice referrendum, we had Bob Birrell announcing a huge split between graduate and non-graduate votes, which implied the possibility of a Trump/Brexit style revolt.
It's incredibly interesting to see such a chasm in interest between those at the levers of policy and the rest of the society.

velocityjohnno, before you get too excited, let's break it down.
So, every time the bloke conducted a poll there would be "3 or 4" people with wildly different views to everyone else. When he looked at the common traits this group of 3 or 4 held he found that:
1. They lived in a area populated by more than 10,000 people.
2. They had graduate degrees.
3. They had a combined household income of or above $150k
I would suggest that the 3 or 4 people are definite outliers in the poll. The article itself states this.
How would this group of 3 or 4 have an influence on any of the above mentioned issues? Again, the article states this group makes up 1% of the sample size (it's actually 0.4% but hey, not as catchy).
Is it interesting because they have chosen to use the word "elite" and claim that this 3 or 4 people out of every 1,000 polled are actually "driving forces behind the destructive radicalism which is pushing us into a cultural civil war." How? What influence do they exert? How have Zero Hedge arrived at this conclusion with the information they have?
Great way to pour petrol on an already out of control dumpster fire though.
