A Chinese company has put forward a multi-billion-dollar plan to build a new city on the Papua New Guinean island of Daru, which sits on the nation's sea border with Australia. Daru Island lies in the Torres Strait and is only about 200 kilometres from the Australian mainland.

In November last year Papua New Guinea's Government signed a memorandum of understanding with another Chinese company to investigate building a $200 million fisheries park on Daru.

The (true) horror...the horror...

Westofthelake Friday, 5 Feb 2021 at 01:33 pm new

I reckon the scary bit is this:

Craig Kelly chairs the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Law Enforcement.

Andrew Bragg chairs the Select Committee on Financial Technology and Regulatory Technology.

George Christensen chairs the Joint Standing Committee on Trade and Investment Growth.

Matthew Canavan is deputy chair of the Select Committee on Job Security.

And Tim Wilson chairs the Standing Committee on Economics.

It's a bog shop for arse wipes.

“ A Chinese company says it wants to build a new $39bn city with a major seaport, industrial area and free-trade zone on Papua New Guinea’s south coast, just kilometres from Australian territory.

The “New Daru City” proposal will escalate concerns within Australian security agencies over China’s interest in PNG’s impoverished Western Province, where another Chinese company plans to build a $200m fisheries industrial park.

Hong Kong-registered WYW Holding, a developer of Myanmar’s New Yangon City, has asked PNG Prime Minister James Marape to approve the development under a “Build Operate Transfer” arrangement, where PNG would receive the assets after an unspecified period of Chinese ownership and management.

…Mr Mo said the proposed city would span 100sq km and include fisheries and agricultural processing facilities, and provision for “intensive manufacturing”.

…Daru, which has a population of just 20,000 people and is the centre of a multidrug-resistant tuberculosis epidemic, is about 200km from the Australian mainland but within kilometres of Australian islands in the Torres Strait.”

New daily on fire lately. that alan kohler article linked above is excellent

"That $260 billion, or whatever it ends up being, is very unlikely to be paid back. Why pay yourself back. In fact, the RBA should buy all of the $800 billion Government debt, rising to $1 trillion this year, and cancel it. Just write it off"

House prices to the moon.

I gotta say, I find it most disappointing that PNG have folded to chinese influence so readily

I know oz has backed off a lot of aid to PNG, ...and that PNG poilies are much more susceptible to dirty chinese money than an aldi bag craving oz politician...

but seriuosly...is there no loyalty earned whatsoever?

no concern or craving for a better deal for the little people of PNG?

their pollies should be strung up big time for selling out of the people of PNG down this dirty road

House prices going up I hear , mate brought block in Mullumbimby late last year that is still being developed and can’t build for 18 months , cost him $425 ,000 he put 5% deposit , full amount paid when development finishes , 3 days after purchasing he was offered $40,000 more , 2 days ago real estate called and offered him $100,000 more than he paid . He said no. The 80 blocks originally advertised last year sold in less than 2 days. He got $250,000 more than he expected for his original house in ewingsdale .
