Tunes

Alright, time for some discussion on what yr all listening too. My iTunes inventory is getting a little stale so I'm up for some inspiration.

Currently loving The Drones' album "Havilah".. incredible songwriting and some of the best recorded guitars and drum I've heard in a long time. I'm a little late to the party with this album but it's on high rotation at the moment and will probably stay there a while. I've seen these guys live once (Fowlers, Adelaide) and fortunately they're incredible on stage too. Can't wait to see them again.

And this aint far behind it.......

stunet Friday, 7 Nov 2014 at 08:19 am new

I stepped into a black hole last night, spent a few hours listening to the sounds of UK electro-rock bands from the late-80s/early-90s. Goaties, dreads on white boys, drum machines. Few good tunes but the whole scene should remain a void of anti-matter where light and, even better, sound, can't escape:

Neds' Atomic Dustbin - Grey Cell Green

Jesus Jones - Info Freako

Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine - The Only Living Boy in New Cross

Pop Will Eat Itself - Can U Dig It?

Therapy? - Screamager

stunet Friday, 7 Nov 2014 at 09:06 am new

UK music timeline continuum:

Kinks > Stones > Sabbath > T Rex > Clash > Gang Of Four > Smiths > Stone Roses....*eerie void during the early 90s*....Radiohead > Bloc Party > Snow Patrol > Flo and the Machine.

Spice Girls.....

Spice Girls? You can tell me what you want, what you really, really want, but I rest my case.

early 90s uk - blur, the verve, portishead.....

Shame the cure didn't make your list, stu, re' late 70s/early 80s.......

zenagain Friday, 7 Nov 2014 at 09:32 am new

Just mucking around.

Coincidentally, I was listening to a bit of Sabbath and Stone Roses on the way to a meeting yesterday.

But, if you wanna be my lover, ya gotta get with my friends.

zenagain Friday, 7 Nov 2014 at 09:36 am new

Stone Roses, nice driving track.

Not a comrehensive list SD, just linking the most imprtant bands of their era IMHO. Comprehensive would include:

The Animals

Beatles

Mott The Hoople

Uriah Heep

Buzzcocks

Wire

The Fall

Elvis Costello

Ian Dury

Discharge

GBH

The Exploited

Peter and the Test Tube Babies

XTC

Leftfield

The Prodigy

etcetera etcetera  et-fucking-cetera.

Great list Stu.

Wow, some great bands.

Just a few personal favs out of your list.

stunet Friday, 7 Nov 2014 at 10:19 am new

Not blowing up at you SD, just realised how dire Oz music is when compiling that list. Look at a classic industrial town in England, Manchester for example, and the bands it produces:
Buzzcocks
Magazine
The Smiths
Joy Division
New Order
Stone Roses
Happy Mondays
The Fall

The Antipodean equivalent of Manchester is Newcastle, a blue collar steel town. And what has Newcastle produced? The Screaming fucking Jets....

fraser-gordon Friday, 7 Nov 2014 at 10:21 am new

Jesus and Mary chain, Happy Monday's ,Inspiral Carpet's can't forget Primal Scream and these guy's who where great.

The Stupids! I saw them play Sutho Royal with the Hard Ons. Even got a split single with those two bands.

Well at least Bryan had a few more hits than the vapours, zen ;)

I thought the 70s roxy music days (Ferry/Eno/Manzanera) were very influential...... A big influence on talking heads and split enz to name two bands....

zenagain Friday, 7 Nov 2014 at 05:11 pm new

Oh Sheepy, my blue -eyed son, where have you been my darling young one?

That one was a bit tongue in cheek. Pobably should have picked Rick Astley.

Bryan Ferry also does a better version of John Lennons 'Jealous Guy' too imo.

blindboy Friday, 7 Nov 2014 at 08:45 pm new

Can't agree Stu, I would swap all those bands ( except The Animals) for Nick Cave and The Drones. Throw in Cold Chisel, The Easybeats, The Saints, You Am I, Sunnyboys, Yothu Yindi and Radio Birdman and I think we are ahead on points per population! So going back to Ben's original post
Gareth Liddiard from The Drones

The Drones themselves, is there anything better!

.....or providing a little Aussie history lesson starting at 3.00

Or a young Nick giving them hell

Uplift, re' the "ice" thread.... As you know kids are like little sponges. They take in everything, the good the bad and the ugly..... Dysfunction can destroy a potential genius.... The best seed in the worse soil will always be a struggling plant...... It's fucking sad..... With that in mind;

Well, as a child I mostly spoke inside my head
I had conversations with the clouds, the dogs, the dead
And they thought my broken, that my tongue was coated lead
But I just couldn't make my words make sense to them
If you only listen with your ears... I can't get in

And I spent my evenings pullin' stars out of the sky
And I'd arrange them on the lawn where I would lie
And in the wind I'd taste the dreams of distant lives
And I would dress myself up in them through the night
While my folks would sleep in separate beds... and wonder why

And through them days I was a ghost atop my chair
My dad considered me a cross he had to bear
And in my head I'd sing apologies and stare
As my mom would hang the clothes across the line
And she would try to keep the empty... from her eyes

So, then one afternoon I dressed myself alone
I packed my pillowcase with everything I owned
And in my head I said "goodbye," then I was gone
And I set out on the heels of the unknown
So my folks could have a new life of their own
So that maybe I could find someone
Who could hear the only words that I'd known

Yeh, that's sad sheepster. And for such an 'advanced' society, sadly ever more typical. Won't go to the top of the charts though. No tits. Pretty hard to piss in kids ears about all the wondrous things. Truth, study hard, be good. While the 'leaders' lie their guts out, get away with what ever they can.... according to the law of course. Tone's daughter? One young girl had a go at the truth. Fixed that little bitch up, quick smart. Fuck'n kids! Poor ruddy, had to go to hospital, poor little bugger. Waitin list? Fuck off!!!! Roll out the red carpet, or your fuck'n heads will do the rollin'! I'll give ya fuck'n waitin list!!! What do ya think I am a fuck'n pensioner!

Kids are smart. Silicon rules! Tits, arses and lips bring the big bucks. Make 'epic' movies, snort some coke. Like Leo, then you'll get the invites. Set yourself on fire and surf into a cliff face... at night preferably... in a typhoon... get the hits!!! Climate change? Leo's on it! Honest arny for president! Bit of HGH, few roids, bit of powder, few fibs here and there never hurt anyone. Its for a good cause.

If it wasn't so sad. South Park. Unedited version.

And now this... fuck'n physcho troublemakers!

We'll give ya fuck'n lies! Turn that shit oorrff! You's shouldn't be watching that truth shit you fuck'n kids!!! The cunts used to eat each other, specially up fuck'n north!!! Read it in a farkin 'history' book! We're 3rd generation fuck'n Cooks!!! Uncle fuck'n eddie cook woulda sorted the fuckers out!!!

News flash to Uplift. Aborigines are all.....people.
Like you and me. Not spiritual gods closer to a higher power.

You do realise that whitey was here 60000 years ago as well don't you.... And they hadn't invented flying then, just mucking around in the dirt like your idols.

Not detracting from the aboriginal peoples what so ever. Just saying that that's all they are- people, just like you and me.

The more you put them on a pedestal , the more you advertise your own personal disenchantment with your life.

New's flash to blowin. People who by our own laws, the same laws that we we break and broke, owned this land. For 60,000 years. 60,000. People with a proven, not even remotely matched, especially not by us, record of continual cultural success. You are detracting from them. We are knowingly in receipt of stolen property.

I don't deny that Uplift. I just don't think that Blackfellas are anything more than fellas with black skin.

Yes thanks Stu, I just gave R by Queens of the Stonage a blast on my way into town. Gold.

Listening to Lee Scratch Perry Arkology, which, being a comprehesive box set, involves sitting through multiple remixes of the same song. Not too sure of the big picture cultural worth of those Jamaicans - have they had continued cultural success? Hmmm - but it's good music for a detached state of mind.

Nice work. It's been a good day - a cultural success if you will- at least I haven't found myself thrown in the back of a paddy wagon and all the required shopping has been accomplished.

Might reward myself with a mild slice of mental detachment and some sweet music for the return trip.
Think I'll start with The Scientists- Swampland and play it by feel from there.

Nice waves at the Bluff a couple of days ago Stu....windy as all get out now.

So there is a song on YouTube that I like and want to recommend. How the fuck do I prints link on here ?
I went to YouTube , entered the title and it came up , but no URL or any such harsh computer devices to utilise.
Yes , I'm computer illiterate. My first ever computer entry was to Swellnet ! Back then I was The Blowin and My first response was from Stu telling me that I'd written an impenetrable block of letters.
Had I ever heard of paragraphs he asked ?
I've gotten better- by a slim margin. Maybe Swellnet could continue to improve my media skills ?
Fingers crossed.

To embed vid, click on "Share", then "Embed" then just cut and paste the highlighted link into your post, and it will come up, but you need to refresh the page here to see it appear.
