Tunes

Alright, time for some discussion on what yr all listening too. My iTunes inventory is getting a little stale so I'm up for some inspiration.

Currently loving The Drones' album "Havilah".. incredible songwriting and some of the best recorded guitars and drum I've heard in a long time. I'm a little late to the party with this album but it's on high rotation at the moment and will probably stay there a while. I've seen these guys live once (Fowlers, Adelaide) and fortunately they're incredible on stage too. Can't wait to see them again.

Weird Songs that do yer head in...should not even exist...truly mental Trax!
Lincolnshire Anthem (Poaching Song)
Tune is as least 250 years old & has more covers than that...
Sounds rather innocent & is a quality little singalong ditty.

But it gets a little weirder when weird arse people trip out the tune.
Possibly coz it's mostly sung when pissed > Then they come up with these craziest covers.
If yer into Twilight Zone Trax then try yer luck with this Folk / DrWho / Pub-Punk Track

Original Folk Version

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Thing_(song)
tbb was trawling thru Oz Charts & come upon this novel moral tune...
Jan 1951 "The Thing" #1 Oz Charting Song (Same Lyrics as Batman's Punk version)
Which led to fleshing this out ...thru a weird arse Time Warp of even Weirder Mutations.

Feb 1951 Tingen by Jens og Erik

1958 Flying Saucer / Alien Chipmunks by Bill Buchanan

Mid 70's Dystopian Techno "Underground Cult Version"
( Just go with it... then...Oh! Yeah...see wot ya mean! ) Wow! That's pretty fucked up...Huh!
Wait until the end...simply reverts back to the Ditty...Techno Goth Chick be like Wot..."That RAVE Code...Wot!"

12 Jan 2018 / 1960's Batman's Grotesque Punk Thing Version

A bit of royalty passed today, the frontman of the Clowns.
@thermalben, pretty sure whenever i bumped into you in the city we were both either coming or going form a Clowns gig.
Absolutely legendary band and i know most South ozzies would have some fond memories of this band and it's phenomenal frontman. Rest in peace Mark Fenech, AKA Ocker Bozo. Voice of a generation really.

The Residents Commercial Album has 40 songs (Stands up well in time)
The Residents founded in the late '60's
Started recording during early '70's
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Residents

tbb is a typical fan that latches onto a period of works...from Mid '70's > mid '80's LPs
1974 Meet the Residents 1976 The Third Reich'n'Roll (Were back tracked)
As above...tbb and many fans were hooked via 1980 Commercial Album...well durr!

But first to intro the Companion UK Bluegrass Snuff Punker that backdoors these weird jingles.

Snakefinger likewise flies under the pre New Wave / Punk Radar as an Alt underground hog Artist
Pretty sure..."Man in the Dark Sedan" was too weird for ABC / MTV
You'd more likely see this on Wonder World as one of Johnno's Flip discs... Hey Kids > check the Freak!

Pretty much all these recordings are still considered alt Goth / Punk / new wave & that won't change.
Rare treat for the crew...just when ya thought ya worn out new wave...gotta go 'round again...proper!
That's why ya need Ben's Tunesmiths to lend an ear to wot ya need to hear...this was & still is the sound!

1978 Snakefinger : The Spot

1980 Snakefinger : Man in the Dark Sedan

1980 The Residents : Commercial Album...40 songs

9th Aug 1986 Oz Tour at Coolangatta Jet Club (Legendary Final Meeting of Tribes Gig)
Here's a real rare time capsule ...tbb can share a sample of wot that 1986 tour gig was like..
Sharing that mystical punk Snakefinger sadly passed away within a year...1st July 1987.
'It's a man's World' ( They record these '60's covers to crossover to Mainstream )

Great stuff, TBB. Hard to picture The Residents playing the Gold Coast. What a clash of style and culture.

Checking their tour dates, The Residents did 17 Australian gigs in August '86, including just two nights off from the 4th to the 21st.

Be some sweaty eyeballs after that.

They wake up Ben's Tunesmith > Hey! Plug in the gear...WTF is this ...who are you Dags.

Avalanche : Landslide (This is called Pub Rock...just so ya know! We boss it!)

Redhouse : I Like Dancing (C'mon everybody lets do The New Wave)

They call this a Video Clip by a Police State band called Sky Hooks (Not too rocky I hope!)

Brandee : Rainbow World (We call this a Power Ballad...coz it goes off track a bit...Ok!)

Punkz : Anyway you want it.. (Everybody Punk Out...Pogo if ya like!)

Geez what to make of this. AI Kurt. So it's his voice. Indisputably. Bent twisted and manipulated into place by A.I. And....it's a masterpiece. One of my favourites. But its also not.....cos it's fake. So confused. Is this something to embrace or reject? I mean it brings him back from the dead right and opens up a whole new avenue of his brilliance. But it lacks....soul. Or does it?

ps: i remember once learning that there was only one thing that stopped a fire from being classified as a living thing. It was that it couldn't think for itself. Is that the same with A.I. Is that even true?

Incredible show at the Croxton last night.

Mod Con opened with some smart snappy tunes, The Nation Blue then kicked it out of the grounds with an incredible set (featuring Paul Dempsey on keys for most of it).

Paul and Dan Kelly were spectacular. Actually realized that I haven't seen Paul play live before.. wow, he's even better on stage than I imagined. Felt like a choir with the whole room singing along.

And then the Drones. Gosh how I have missed them. A fantastic set that - apart from tonight - will likely never be repeated.

What a privilege to stand in the room and watch it all.

Props to the sound engineers too, they did a killer job (what a great room too!).

Ben. Sounds like a great night, well worth flying down.

We used to have a flat two streets away from the Croxton when my son had to go to school in Melbourne a few years ago.
It was always rocking.
I attended the Sunny Boys gig a few years back, a true favourite from the early eighties when we were travelling around on the Bob Hawke Surf Team.
I love the security set up on the front of the premises, construction grade 12mm diameter deformed bar, nobody is getting in or out or breaking in overnight.

Rock solid, like its enduring existence and commitment to live music, may it never die. AW

A lil' while back tbb promised to track down an early gnarly pioneering Skate Punk Track...
Just give up tbb...it's all Micky Mouse Doo Wap ...or so we're led to believe...
Well let's just say tbb found wot he was looking for but in the strangest of places...
Would never have thought to look here...kinda like a bitter pill to kill the golden goose anomaly.

Not a one off novelty act but a signature F.U. Punk sign off from a raucous Beach Club Surf Band....Huh!
How does one set out to look for a contrived breeding ground for an impossibly shit hot Skate Punk track.
Quite simply...one can't or doesn't but if ya sniff around long enough the foul odour will waft your way...Yes!
tbb hovered long enough to scoop a swag of early 1960's skate trax...Like 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5...
Guessing it was part AI auto fashioning sickly daggy searches from same era...
tbb feels he lucked searches off the tail of a default dopey doe-eyed AI.
Fooled Google that tbb's aim was true...Computa had no option but to cough up the goods!
Kinda like a Weak Spot that pays out...Computa coughs up...
'Hey that's not fair...you cheap punk...You tricked me!'...Mine now!
Oh Yes please...come to Poppa Hodad Punk...can smell this sound...it's so pungent...lock it in tbb...Winner!

1963 The Crossfires were a high school Band picked up by local Boomer Redondo Beach Club
High School Hop Band signed with the Devil to join the Fibreglass Jungle...
So yer saying this Beach Club manager spikes the Kidz Hop Soda & turns them into Psycho kooks...Yep!
So can we hear these Jocks flip from School Hop to Skoolies DK Shindig...Fuck Yeah...tbb wants a sip...

The Crossfires Redondo Beach Club Theme Tune ... [ Revelaire ] (Not bad...huh!)
https://scontent.fbne5-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t39.30808-6/476643683_63864993…

House Band get well Out of Control > Surf the shit outta your Bored Board...no worries 'bout that!

At the height of the Stoner Surf Band Craze they turn nasty & bite the hand that feeds them...
1964 Surf/Skate Punk Band : The Crossfires are now Proper Surf Nazis...
Release Anti Skate Track (Seriously taking the piss outta Surf Merch Industry > go for the jugular!)
Santa and The Sidewalk Surfer

Ok! But Why did the Crossfire Surf Nazis lay down down arms
Because...crew know why...It's 1964...well durr!
British Invasion was comin' for their Surf Chix > gotta wear a wig or harden up with Stoner Beats.
tbb claims that delicious cream pie in Surf Industry's face flies under the radar outside of Ben's Tunes shh!

Crossfire ceased & band further retreated to harden up their act by turning into Turtles.
(re: Flip Band Title / Above track)
Ben's Tunesmith's luv Smashing Up Surf / Skate Punk History...music for pleasure...Gotcha!

Got up to see the show last night. Missed Mod Con, but I'm sure you appreciated Raquel's left-of-center drumming, Ben. TNB played a more midpaced set than in days of yore, and sadly nothing from their first L.P, but I highly enjoyed it. Didn't see much of Don Walker due to... reasons, but at one stage I was thinking about how good the slide guitar was, then realised that the player was, of course, Charlie Owen.

I've definitely seen better Drones shows (seen them heaps), but that was to be expected. They were still mostly ripping, and it was fucken great to see those songs live again. Locust was particularly crushing. The whole show wasn't loud enough, though, and I was pretty close to and directly in front of the stage right P.A. Seems to be an issue at the Croxton. My tinnitus thanks the venue, but sometimes ya just wanna feel it, right?

thermalben Saturday, 31 May 2025 at 09:31 am new

Had these guys on high rotation (again!) after Wednesday's show. Whilst their noisy geetar tunes are without peer, I reckon it's some of their most subtle moments that provide the most beauty.

Even more extraordinary is that this is a live recording.
