Alright, time for some discussion on what yr all listening too. My iTunes inventory is getting a little stale so I'm up for some inspiration.

Currently loving The Drones' album "Havilah".. incredible songwriting and some of the best recorded guitars and drum I've heard in a long time. I'm a little late to the party with this album but it's on high rotation at the moment and will probably stay there a while. I've seen these guys live once (Fowlers, Adelaide) and fortunately they're incredible on stage too. Can't wait to see them again.

I have had my annual Hüsker Dü's megahit 'proto-everything-surfers-went-to-see-on-a-thursday-in-coastal-pubs-and-clubs-in-1989-1992' earworn, (I reckon triggered by @stu's Minor Threat post the other day).

(^ it is an enjoyable earworm, always welcome. below is the flipside of the EP, kinda '85 Michael Stipe does Smith Street Band..)

basesix Friday, 4 Jul 2025 at 06:01 pm new

this was an interesting one (for me) a couple of weeks ago.. I had this earworm of less than a second of a thing.. just a harmony, kinda saccharine and bland 2 part harmony with a bit of fuzz around it.. drove me nuts. what was it? I though it was a UK shoegaze thing somewhere between Inspiral Carpets and Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine.. but it kept reminding me of Tism when I thought of it.. I'd locked into completely the wrong type of thing.. turns out it was just a snatch of Frank Black's opening "why..." from Trompe Le Monde..

truebluebasher Saturday, 5 Jul 2025 at 12:33 am new

Need a hand there basesix...
Here's an Inspiral Carpets song that crosses the Atlantic
Doors organ...sounds more like Dandys...tbb falls for it everytime.
Slots into cool alt US vibe... real easy to like...(Was too long & cool for Top 10)
https://www.officialcharts.com/songs/inspiral-carpets-dragging-me-down/
Crosses over whole US/UK/Oz markets without the Star Power.
Sounded cool enough for tbb to buy single back then & still like it now.
Great atmospheric track for Parties...see folk groovin' & tappin' away...etc...

basesix Saturday, 5 Jul 2025 at 07:38 am new

groovy way to start the weekend, cheers @tbb.. and just cos I think hexagons are the bomb:
(no flyer pun intended.. cracker flyer though, explains a lot.. down this way, the Robe jetty's busted, long beach undrivable and has a 4' escarpment (5' - 7' according to surfline) and the Kingston jetty simply got sick of the storm and floated away)

blackers Saturday, 5 Jul 2025 at 09:17 am new

Weekend grooves are a good thing. The Inspiral Carpets debut album is a cracker.
On shapes and piers and things...."triangles are my favourite shape.."

you seem to have the knowledge @blackers.. why, when there's just three regular polygons that tessellate.. and two of those work within each other (one of which nature creates, bees to basalt), do humans focus 99% of our energy on the square.. love a good right angle.. but 99%..? the hexagon relegated to tiles and screw heads (please no-one comment on stripping a hex on their fins and wishing it was square.. should be an equilateral triangle if anything within this nuff guff..)

Oh, for a hexagon appreciative world ; )

basesix Saturday, 5 Jul 2025 at 10:20 am new

^ as the pre Prunes might have said..
just a bit of post-Friday rhetorical nuff..

fuck I miss being able to pop along to Adelaide shows.. this is possibly the most Adelaide show clip ever.. loose, fun, and give a shit.. (for the not-so-precious that is, everything harry butler (of #21 B Side fame) was about, can't believe DNA name has gone LG+, you can actually buy the whole fanzine from Harry somewhere, I did. Cost you about 100 bucks. Unreal.

Chop playing the best pub in Melbs on the 17th July..

truebluebasher Sunday, 6 Jul 2025 at 08:50 pm new

Sounds like the Roxy...perfect bookend for basesix opener...
This is what come to mind...Let's do this...
From that UK Subs 1st LP with Roxy Mix Bands / Live Side.
Sunday Pub Punk / Extra Snuff Session

See if tbb can track down the rest of that set...be cool if we can...

Mystery Riff Time
tbb thought it was Rockwiz...
Or a mental Mars Bar Ad
Or some Music based Game Show where contestants repeat Bug Eating Quests...

Yes I know they released Flip'side'Turn Single with variations on a theme...Got one...
Possibility this being a modern version...maybe!

Reason being...just heard it on an Ai Surf Clip Soundtrack.
Kicks Arse & Stands out...grabs yer attention coz all have heard this riff!

tbb went lookin' & this popped out...
Rocker Chicks by Audionautix (4 years ago)
So if it is Ai...why does it sound like they ripped it off some struggling rock artist...
Also if it is Ai...is this one of the earliest examples of an Ai winning Hook...coz it sounds solid!

From this Massive Ai Back Catalogue
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCiZrrHOyr_SHWYpYlJeUnZw

Asking / Sharing coz tbb thinks Ben's Tunesmiths are faster than Ai at plucking this riff!
Give it a spin then robot tbb...
Counting on the crew to name that tune...reckon some poor punk owns this riff & got played!

basesix Sunday, 6 Jul 2025 at 09:27 pm new

unreal, @tbb. I have a day of being around planes tomorrow, Melbs studio audience stuff.. can't wait to sit and listen to roxy plays with funny sushi.

I'll try to get some definites around ADL's Crown and Anchor this week, know you're a venue man. Last I heard, they're vacating while the big buiding goes on, they have a surrogate venue on the west side of ADL, and they'll keep both running, when they're allowed to reopen on the east side post skyscraper construction.. (another one going up on ADL Festival plaza, too, hitting the headlines)..

Can't wait till you move down to SA, in body or spirit. xx
