I heart WOTD

The wave of the day does it for me big time. Nice work Steen Barnes , Shaun Anderson and Swellnet.
In one photo you've encompassed everything nice about surfing. If I was a wanker I'd say that it was perfect except for the fact he is in a wetsuit. Which it is , it's perfect .....except for the fact he's in a wetsuit.

Today’s - cord to the horizon

ojackojacko Monday, 15 Jun 2020 at 10:01 am

peter jovic - every pic you run of his is an absolute winner

Solitude Tuesday, 16 Jun 2020 at 08:19 am

Jeez that's amazing. Looks uncrowded...…...

lostdoggy Tuesday, 16 Jun 2020 at 08:28 am

Solitude - looks like 4 guys caught inside on one wave and if you see her photo on instagram of winki from the same day (yesterday) we can assume that yes, it 'looks' uncrowded haha

zenagain Tuesday, 16 Jun 2020 at 08:45 am

Judy nails the lineup shots. Steve Arklay too.

Today is no different.

Bnkref Tuesday, 16 Jun 2020 at 10:10 am

Pumping!

I've got one of Judy's line up shots on my wall.

She's an excellent photographer.

Vic Local Tuesday, 16 Jun 2020 at 01:54 pm

Judy is an excellent person too. She's good for advice about where to sit and what the swell is doing.
The day Judy paddled out to Winki was a hoot. She was queen of the lineup and all the regulars were calling her into waves. Classic.

GuySmiley Tuesday, 16 Jun 2020 at 03:37 pm

Yeah I’ve got a photo of Judy’s too, from the old style cafe at Airleys.

Westofthelake Tuesday, 16 Jun 2020 at 08:31 pm

Unreal WOTD.

Perfect. Cold, but perfect.

I can see 3 guys wishing they'd stayed wide.

Bnkref Tuesday, 16 Jun 2020 at 08:41 pm

Nowhere to hide when you're caught inside when those freight trains come through. So much water in them.

Craig Wednesday, 17 Jun 2020 at 12:13 pm

Can't believe how casual Paul is in that barrel. He's been doing it there for decades but still, like he could be having a beer, not a care in the world.

zenagain Wednesday, 17 Jun 2020 at 12:17 pm

I was thinking same. Never heard of him, but dig that casual stance.

Walk in the park.

stunet Wednesday, 17 Jun 2020 at 12:18 pm

Cakewalk maybe?

Craig Wednesday, 17 Jun 2020 at 12:21 pm

Cool as a cucumber.

Nick Bone Thursday, 18 Jun 2020 at 11:10 am

Prime example here. So leezey here would definitely have peripheral vision of the lip coming over but is he ‘in it’? Front on perspective would have to be the angle judged from. Only seems to really happen at places with those shallow angled sandbar waves i.e Kirra.

Edit: not taking anything away from this shot/wave. Gimme dat anyday of the week!

Pops Thursday, 18 Jun 2020 at 11:17 am

I reckon that whole section in front of him is about to come down, so he'd be in it without doubt just after the shot was taken.
Love the lighting.

Westofthelake Thursday, 18 Jun 2020 at 05:52 pm

Backlit beauty indeed!

And I know it's been said before (and will again),

Could have been deeper.

tubeshooter Friday, 19 Jun 2020 at 12:18 am

yeah,, capturing the skylight through the roof is awesome but I really like the air brushed look about those ripples in the face .. nice

GuySmiley Saturday, 20 Jun 2020 at 03:40 pm

Today's. A cracker.
Nothing better than being rewarded like that for dragging yourself out of bed early.
So many days and memories just like that.

zenagain Saturday, 20 Jun 2020 at 03:51 pm

Not only is it a killer shot, but a cracking lineup as well. Pretty much perfect and right in everyones fun-zone.

Quite jealous of the two blokes in the pic. They're probably pinching themselves.

Bnkref Saturday, 20 Jun 2020 at 03:52 pm

Was today's from Thursday? Was on dawn patrol there. Great surf, stunning sunrise and hardly anyone around. Bloody good start to the day.

zenagain Saturday, 20 Jun 2020 at 03:54 pm

So that was you Bnkref?

You lucky lucky bastard.

stunet Saturday, 20 Jun 2020 at 04:46 pm

Yeah it was, Bnkref.

Next time wave at the camera.

mattlock Saturday, 20 Jun 2020 at 05:10 pm

Great shot. How good is that almost perfect arc of spray. Let alone that sky and seascape.

Bnkref Saturday, 20 Jun 2020 at 05:41 pm

I think we paddled out a bit earlier than when that photo was taken. Only a handful or so out. Bloody cold but a cracker of a morning.

Steve's got so many good shots from there.

He'd be up there with the highest number of WOTDs?

stunet Saturday, 20 Jun 2020 at 07:07 pm

Never really thought about who's had the most. Steve's defintely got longevity and he's been consistently producing high quality shots. Way back when I started at Swellnet, we were down at Bells and had a BBQ one arvo and threw an invite out to Steve who promptly popped around for a beer.

Long time ago, and he's still submitting.

He's looking at doing some travelling once the COVID thing dies down, so expect to see some variety from him soon.

lostdoggy Saturday, 20 Jun 2020 at 09:05 pm

I reckon Andrew Shield is leading the wotd count this year followed closely by Pete Jovic.

zenagain Saturday, 20 Jun 2020 at 09:15 pm

Judy Scanlon and Jack Dekort get a good run too.

So many good photogs out there. Love WOTD, first thing I check out every morning.

Geez, sound like a giddy teenager.

zenagain Saturday, 27 Jun 2020 at 09:09 am

June 27th

Stop it Jovic, now you're just showing off.

Beautiful.

GuySmiley Saturday, 27 Jun 2020 at 09:37 am

brush strokes or a lesson in 1/2 and 1/4 tones?

Solitude Sunday, 28 Jun 2020 at 12:09 pm

Completely epic. If he made that he could quit surfing and be a happy man. Paddle into that one?

zenagain Sunday, 28 Jun 2020 at 01:44 pm

Been meaning to comment on this one too. Pretty gnarly wave- some heavy water there.

Craig Monday, 29 Jun 2020 at 11:58 am

I think this is the exact wave in our WOTD..

Craig Monday, 29 Jun 2020 at 12:08 pm

Yup..

Unreal Wave, and Craig, super sleuthing there mate.

GuySmiley Tuesday, 30 Jun 2020 at 09:39 am

Today’s ~ similar to Bombora by the Atlantics album cover 1963.

Island Bay Tuesday, 30 Jun 2020 at 06:21 pm

Wow, the beauty of swellnet. WOTD led to Mark Halliday, which in turn took me to Caleb Reid.

Something about watching an artist work. Fills me with joy, and at the same time makes me feel like I'm wasting my time and should be aspiring to something much more.

Blowin Thursday, 2 Jul 2020 at 08:33 am

Half the punters on here have probs done the exact same thing but I’m going to say it anyway...caught the longest wave of my life out there. Pretty much the exact span of the photo , from just next to the rock at Snapper till the last bit of whitewater shown.

Did it after a couple of schooners and fish and chips at the rainbow surf club and with pupils completely dilated by optometrist eye drops. By the end of the wave my legs were shaking and I was glad it wasn’t any longer as it would’ve been shameful to have to abandon such an epic wave .

Cheers Huey you fucken legend.

stunet Thursday, 2 Jul 2020 at 09:41 am

And for all you poetry boffins, yes I bloody well know a 14 line poem is a sonnet, however even at 5am I knew 'A sonnet of the Superbank' sounded like a pretentious wank.

yorkessurfer Thursday, 2 Jul 2020 at 10:15 am

I’ve spent the last month staying in a 12th floor apartment overlooking the Superbank and surfing it almost everyday. Got an amazing deal by checking in the day the resort opened back up after the lockdowns. Only checked out on Saturday when the school holidays put the price up.
The bank is in good shape and it’s been insanely consistent. Seems like the coronavirus and border closures have been good for reducing crowds from my observations.
Took some pics with my iPhone using a pair of Nikon binoculars as a zoom and got some surprisingly good images!

You must be fit as a trout right now YS, super envious

amb Thursday, 2 Jul 2020 at 11:04 am

YS thinking of heading that way soon, whats the name of the Apartment Building?

yorkessurfer Thursday, 2 Jul 2020 at 11:23 am

@amb; It’s called Beach House Seaside Resort. It’s at the Kirra end of Marine Parade. I’m pretty sure Swellnet’s Greenmount cam is located on the roof of this building. It’s a timeshare resort but there might be some availability after the school holidays?

Yeah I’m pretty surf fit at the moment Guy but my shoulders are killing me from all the paddling! It’s hard because you can see Kirra out one window and Snapper out the other so it’s almost impossible not to go surfing when you can see it all day! Haha

https://i.ibb.co/6Y7x0p9/4-F427-CD4-FB96-4-AC6-8-D65-1764723706-FA.png

Beautiful winter sunsets overlooking Kirra Hill from there too!

GuySmiley Wednesday, 8 Jul 2020 at 04:20 pm

Geez, its after 4pm and nothing from the commentariat! What a cracker.

zenagain Wednesday, 8 Jul 2020 at 06:01 pm

I'm with you Guy.

Sometimes the ocean does love you back.

Big hugs everybody.

stunet Wednesday, 8 Jul 2020 at 07:47 pm

Indeed. David said he took that photo at the back end of an incredible ten day run of swell.

Which itself came on the back of a long and strict lockdown, one of the tightest in the world.

All worries would be forgotten if you saw that set thundering down the point.

GuySmiley Saturday, 11 Jul 2020 at 09:29 pm
