I heart WOTD

The wave of the day does it for me big time. Nice work Steen Barnes , Shaun Anderson and Swellnet.
In one photo you've encompassed everything nice about surfing. If I was a wanker I'd say that it was perfect except for the fact he is in a wetsuit. Which it is , it's perfect .....except for the fact he's in a wetsuit.

In this digital and over saturated world it is rare to fire up a webpage and go ‘Woaaaah’. I did that just then.

That is psycho! What an absolute charger. Great shot Steve, great wave riding Adam .

Arnold Horshack Saturday, 21 Sep 2024 at 05:56 pm

That's a crazy drop.....made it?

Wouldn't like to be his spine..

Swellnet you naughty shit stirrers! Great pic TB! Go Crows!!

100 year anniversary of the Stobie Pole this year. Used extensively in the Territory also.

old-dog Sunday, 22 Sep 2024 at 10:02 am

Proud SA icon like the pie floater, the Hills hoist, frog cakes, bung fritz and pasties.
Last forever, termites hate them, just don't slam into one, steel and concrete don't crumple.
Thankfully they are gradually replacing the ugly bastards with underground wires.

basesix Sunday, 22 Sep 2024 at 10:06 am

yeeewww! old-dog. The fact half our state is called 'No Trees Plain'
explains why us and NT needed them.. any re-purposing ideas?
fun Sunday game, up there with a crossword or wordle..

old-dog Sunday, 22 Sep 2024 at 10:11 am

They could dump them off Middleton point to create a half decent break.

basesix Sunday, 22 Sep 2024 at 10:14 am

I like spotting cars with stobie shaped dents in their rear end.

They could use them to build a wall along the Victorian border.

nooo.. we SE SAers need the breaks near the smelter when the wind is like this.
plus a soggy Clark's pie from Mortlake is nice about once a year.

old-dog Sunday, 22 Sep 2024 at 12:00 pm

The wall would just be to stop the riff raff from getting in, not to stop us from getting out, especially if there is a pie at steak.

basesix Sunday, 22 Sep 2024 at 12:14 pm

*phew* I'm in then. If it stops blue/white number-plate bozo convoys bringing their safety-flagged, recovery-trax-adorned urban spaceships across to Piccaninnie and Canunda, I'll vote "1 old-dog".

Pop Down Sunday, 22 Sep 2024 at 04:53 pm

The Riff Raff of Australia WILL be discouraged by an Australian , Stobie Pole Wall .

It will bloody work , no joking .

The smart ones , like U guys , will find all the holes , the nooks and crannies , to enable U 2 drive round , over or through IT , at 110km 2 get a pie ( they sound tasty ) .

No fn worries imho .

Melbourne is FULL , build it :) !

We have enough riff raff :)) !

sounds like covid, @PoppaD,
can you believe I had people in Vic feeling sorry for me?
while I was in Mt Gambier, Port Mac, Beachport, Robe,
having coffees, dancing with pixies and being all not Dan-ish.
cos I wasn't allowed to travel into Aus' l'il SE ghetto?

tubeshooter Sunday, 22 Sep 2024 at 07:21 pm

Better brace yourselves, school holidays are just kickin off in Vic.
A convey of caravans are marching north and west as we speak.

blackers Sunday, 22 Sep 2024 at 07:26 pm

Stuff yooz all. we made across the border unscathed, strange telegraph poles and all! The TARDIS has landed.

Pop Down Sunday, 22 Sep 2024 at 07:35 pm

Unfortunately base six , that was a Real , Ring of Steel .

It caused lasting scars putting Melbourne and Victoria , into a Steel cage .

Luckily , a Conga Line of Caravans , will be moving Far and Wide , these School Holidays .

Australian kids love having a couple of weeks , Off school !

basesix Sunday, 22 Sep 2024 at 07:45 pm

geez, I know PoppaD, when I'm in your town, the stories!
God, people will be hurting for generations.
Trying to make sense of it,
erring on the side of caution,
nanny state, so much lush material
for stretched humans and strained brains..
like I say, it's like we went to war..

southernraw Sunday, 22 Sep 2024 at 10:02 pm

Hey @basesix, were you in town when the mailman delivered a dead whale? Probably 2017. Did a housesit on the espy there and can say i much preferred driving to Portland Woolies to do my groceries than risking the biscuit and leaving my van unattended in the Mt Gambier precinct!!

southernraw Thursday, 26 Sep 2024 at 09:39 am

Shit yeah! Great shot today. Unique angle of the place.

GuySmiley Thursday, 26 Sep 2024 at 09:45 am

Yes, love it, reminds me of a favourite wave on the surf coast on a good day

old-dog Thursday, 26 Sep 2024 at 09:55 am

I watched it for about an hour on Monday arvo, 3 guys out, shit loads of swell but only saw a few waves ridden. One young guy wiped out on the takeoff and then spent the next 30 mins. trying to get back out, must have duck dived 50 waves. I was knackered just watching so I skulked off to a more protected spot and got a few.

blackers Sunday, 29 Sep 2024 at 09:40 am

A great wave and incredible surfing .

I especially like Kirk's mates reaction .

How good is it being in the Right spot and seeing a mate get a Wave of their lives ?

A wonderful shared experience , that will live and be chatted about for a Lifetime !

Bloody Great shot imo .

Something about today's WOTD makes me want to burn every bridge I've got, fill the van up with boards, and disappear for a while.

Looks so nice eh. Stress free surf session.

GuySmiley Wednesday, 9 Oct 2024 at 10:09 am

^^ yes its looking very good as it can often be down the beach there ... and afterwards great coffee and food walking distance from where you left your van for that surf.

I agree, instantly grabbed me. Emotive image.

velocityjohnno Wednesday, 9 Oct 2024 at 01:54 pm

It's such a nice place, doesn't matter if that wave is small or big.

Basesix. Great work there fella.

Good on Robbie for being a quality human.

It’s nothing in our daily lives to chip in a few bucks to make a difference to a young persons life. Don’t just think about , do it.

What’s a couple of less coffees or focaccia’s over a few weeks, all adds up.

This story is only one of many globally, the gift of hearing can enlighten an individuals life.
It’s close to my heart, have a big heart and donate. AW

CALL OUT TO ALL SWELLNET SUBSCRIBERS & NON-SUBSCRIBERS

I think it’s fair to suggest that most of us have enjoyed what Indonesia has to offer, surfing and other pursuits.

We live in a wealthy country with a low population base.

How about as a caring community, I encourage at least 1000 of us to donate $5 to this young fellow through the GoFundMe portal.

Five bucks is nothing to us, it’s a coffee for fuck same.

Many of us go on boat trips, average cost $4K-$6K inc. flights.

One unit cost of what we spend on a boat trip can change a young persons life, forever.

Let’s do the right thing, donate, I did earlier today and have noticed a few others as well. We could double the amount that exist in the fund today, overnight or tomorrow, it’s not hard, just push a few buttons and say goodbye to a scant amount of loose change.

Show us your real mettle and do the right thing.

Many of us have children. Take a moment to think how fortunate ours are. AW

By helping Boy , Swellnet will send out a Great signal but will Also help many other Boys and Girls .

By Leading by example , Boy will show his whole Community , the benefit of a Child being able to hear .

THEN , little babies can get Help , like a Cochlear inplant earlier .

Children under the age of 4 need to get them installed , to develop the pathways to hear really well .

Boy Franklin :) looks like a great Surfing Grom that will be a Walking Billboard , Saying , help kids Hear .

What a Good message .

Fred Hollows type Stuff !

JellyFlater. Hi mate, Great stuff to you and Pops.

Men of your words. The ball is rolling.

Money where your mouth is, truly admirable.

A bit of medical science.
When a child or adult is fitted with hearing aids or a Cochlear Implant it doesn’t mean when you turn the device on that they hear immediately, they dont, it takes years in fact.
So, costs related to this young fella is for the devices, he will need audiological and speech therapy for years to attain ‘speech’, that will also cost comparable amounts.

The brain has to be trained to hear sounds not ever heard before.

To understand the complexities of enabling a person to speak, at infancy in a child not impaired, like most of us were, a child has to hear a word at a minimum of 300 times before they can repeat it once.
Take time to consider the challenge for the hearing impaired to be able to develop speech.

This is off topic I know, but it’s relevant to us surfers because we take their spoils, it’s time to spoil them or at least one of them. AW
