Indonesia is full of so many contradictions in so many different ways but this place takes the cake.

I don't know about the walking thing to find solitude. An old trail I walked yesterday had a dozen crew with ski poles ,large backpacks with 'hydration' tubes dangling,, and selfie sticks. I was practically forced into a position off the track in the bitou bush while the herd made their way back to nearest cafe for 'debriefing'.

AndyM Sunday, 4 Apr 2021 at 07:35 am new

Where abouts are you TS?
Yeah places near me like Mt Warning and Springbrook are full of lycra-clad mincers but plenty of places in northern NSW and even Lamington have quiet corners.
Still a good bet for some peace and quiet I reckon.

Udo that vid was awesome.....

GreenJam Monday, 5 Apr 2021 at 01:38 pm new

absolutely Andy M - and it's about timing. Early and late, dusk and dawn, the golden hours, always fewer out around then. And its just like surfing, that's when a lot of the nature magic happens

AndyM Monday, 5 Apr 2021 at 04:02 pm new

Days like today with a light drizzle are just magic in the bush.

Watched 'The Miami Showband Massacre' last night.. pretty good docco on an event I'd never heard of before. Gives a lot of insight into the period of conflict in Northern Ireland from '68 to '98 too.

Not sure if this has been posted before but motivating. I am not a skier but this looks hard core.

@H2O , that was excellent

Zombie-scrolling through Netflix on the weekend and up came BMX Bandits into my recommendation list. What the hell, I thought, time for an 80's flashback.

And far out! The rental VHS copy of BMX Bandits must have been on high-rotation from Video-Ezy, as I knew every single word. Wasn't quite as corny as I feared it might be, either.

Best part was seeing the Manly region back in the early 80's. Looks like a half decent bank at North Curly too!

The Younger Dryas Comet - How big was it?

12,900 years ago, between 6 and 9 minutes after impact, secondary debris rained down between 1000km and 1500km from the primary impact site with an energetic coverage of 21 megatons per square kilometre and forming the famous Carolina Bays. Compelling presentation by Antonio Zamora; the maths of it are staggering.

A really good fictional story based on facts of that time , Bones of the dark moon , written by Richard Lewis who grew up in klungkung and was 9 years old at the time . https://www.amazon.com/Bones-Dark-Moon-Richard-Lewis/dp/1492761346. Ive spoken to local friends and its a time they don’t really like to talk about , brother turned against brother nephew against uncle , you only had to be accused of being a communist and were taken away never to be seen again .Estimated 50,000 murdered in Bali

North American continent got terraformed in an afternoon. To survive, yes, you would need a bigger boat, or to have been in Australia.

How many times do i need to tell you people i get most of my news through ABC radio during the day while I'm working (mostly until lunch), I might also catch a little bit of news on TV if lucky.

I also stream podcast sometimes while at work mostly in the arvo's but more world/USA news/politics or social politics. (like Ben Shapiro, Tim Pool.)

Most of the news related things i watch on Youtube are interviews with people that are also more podcast interview style (like Triggernometry, Mikalia Peterson, Joe Rogan etc)

Occasionally i might watch some news from MSM on youtube, again if its a topic that really interest me.

Cant see how Deep Fake is going to have an effect on any of these news sources????

GuySmiley Friday, 25 Jun 2021 at 07:26 pm new

Ah don’t think so info, see foreign correspondent last night? Watch it on YouTube

indo-dreaming Saturday, 26 Jun 2021 at 07:17 pm new

I watched the episode https://www.abc.net.au/foreign/american-deepfake/13418096

Ive watched a docco on it before so little of it was new to me but it's still interesting and 100% scary.

Doesn't affect me or the way i get my news more than anyone else though no news outlet is going to be immune to it because if they want to report on something and get news out quickly they wont have a chance to discover if it's fake or not unless the tech gets ahead and can ensure its not fake, they will only know if its 100% not fake if its their camera man (or should i say camera person these days) etc that have recorded something.

A lot of the stuff i watch on places like YouTube actually has an advantage of being not so hot off the press and talk about things a little latter, mostly taking about the way the media like CNN or Fox are reporting on something and much of the stuff i watch is just discussions with people that is more a broader type news thing (not so much hot off the press)

Im also not the sort of person who watches a clip on FB or Youtube and blindly shares it especially if it's just a random source, i will go see what other news outlets are saying about it, even factcheck websites (although i do think they can be misleading too)

I also cross check a lot of news stuff too, if its something i have an interest in, i will actually get the views of both left and right news media which helps paint a bigger complete picture, especially if im going to share or discuss something here as i don't want someone to come back and say you are wrong and this is the simple explanation etc

Obviously media like Sky news can be misleading/bias so we all know you have to be careful with news outlets like that, but i think media like ABC etc can be even worse in a sense, because they generally have a reputation of being more reliable so you can have your guard down and blindly trust it and the misinformation is often harder to spot, because it's generally not a total lie, it's more just leaving out important aspects of a story that are important to the bigger picture, sometimes really important aspects.

Heres is some examples:

You often here ABC talk and focus on Indigenous deaths in custody, but how often do they mention that the rates of deaths in custody of indigenous people (based on indigenous prison population) is actually slightly lower than non indigenous people?

They dont because it takes away the narrative they are tying to paint, they want people to be in a type of uproar and razz them up and have this idea that cops/prison guards are killing indigenous people in custody. (off course extremely rare mostly natural or medical related deaths or suicide etc)

Or another related story, that indigenous kid that died in police custody years ago the one with the footage where they took his chocolate biscuits, and you instantly think fuck why on earth did they care he had chocolate biscuits and were being so persistent on getting them.

Ive never ever heard ABC mention the fact he was diabetic hence why they took the biscuits and were so concerned, they were basically tying to ensure he didnt risk dying, but that doesn't make a good story.

Same with Bileo family, how many people actually understand that they were in Australia on temporary protection bridging visas and were always suppose to return home when it had been found safe to do so, if you asked people on the street, i bet most would say they were living here in the community because they had been permanently resettled here as refugees and suddenly authorities changed their minds and wanted to send them home.

Same deal with anything around Manus or Nauru, they can be extremely misleading, to the point Nauru even banned them from the Pacific Island Forum years ago.

Im sure there is plenty more examples.

Im just using ABC as an example as are regarded as a pretty reliable news outlet by media check websites etc, but the reality is all news outlets have bias and intentionally mislead to give their viewers the story that will get the most attention, so even without deep fake we are sadly often being mislead.

indo-dreaming Saturday, 26 Jun 2021 at 07:34 pm new

I wish there was a website that took media articles from both sides for example the Australian and Guardian and put then in the one place and then pointed out the points of both views, providing the reader with as balanced view as possible.

Im sure it would be a hit especially if you could somehow ensure no bias whatsoever.
