Indonesia is full of so many contradictions in so many different ways but this place takes the cake.

Spose it's still surfing...

indo-dreaming Thursday, 9 May 2019 at 05:08 pm new

Loved all those shows, Malcom douglas, Leyland brothers, Alby mangles, Harry Butler.

Sadly half of them turned out to be dodgy in some way, the TV/Movies still rock though.

Optimist Friday, 10 May 2019 at 06:01 am new

I loved those shows too, and also the Malcom Florence fishing videos..was glued to them...That sex mountain video you posted was crazy Indo, there you go, in the end people just do what they want anyway.

Netflix released The Dawn Wall a little while ago.

Incredible documentary - I'd heard about this feat when it occured (in 2015) but the storytelling and cinemaphotography is amazing. And the backstory (going back decades) is incredible too.

I lived with a climber many years ago - lovely fella, but jeez they're more hardcore than almost every surfer I've ever met.

Even if you don't like climbing, this docco will absolutely hook you in.

And jeez, Yosemite is a place I need to visit.

Blowin Friday, 10 May 2019 at 08:32 pm new

Ben , thanks for the recommendation. Dawn Wall was very good.

Got any more ?

Patrick Sunday, 12 May 2019 at 09:14 am new

Has Valley Uprising been mentioned? Hilarious, history of climbing in Yosemite, on Netflix. Also, Free Solo if it's still on at the cinema.

Island Bay Sunday, 12 May 2019 at 02:08 pm new

Upvote for Valley Uprising. Such a good film.

Climbing really makes every other pursuit/sport/obsession seem like a walk in the park.

Yeah great try to discredit Lauren's new documentary with some video of some guy criticising an old video of hers, i mean FFS they guy doesn't even show his face.

Laurens new documentary isn't an opinion or theory its a documentary with real people and interviews etc that is are eye opening especially considering it mirrors much of the issues we have in Australia.

And im sure many things she has uncovered are also happening in our own system especially the abuse of the system by NGO/refugee advocates and coaching of refugees (well so called refugees) to game the system.

Oi, V.I., remember when your gal and that other gronk went to NZ last year?

Anyway, did you go see her here in Oz?

Hahahaha. We know why you 'like' her, buddy.

indo-dreaming Tuesday, 28 May 2019 at 08:17 am new

What a surprise another obscure link from Factotum trying to paint anyone with right wings views as some white supremest.

I like much of what she has to say, but like any figure don't agree with everything she has to say, and no i would never go see her or anyone like her or any kind of speaker, i wont even go see a comedian, only interested in original live bands at small venues.

I do think she can be a little too much at times using that shock type youtube/social media type tactics, but her new docco is far from that though, it's actually fairly mild and made more for mainstream consumption.

It's good but to be honest a little bit disappointed the best bits were already released as teasers, in particular the footage of refugee advocate from advocates abroad Ariel Ricker secretly recorded explain how they coach migrants to say and act including faking their religion to get accepted as refugees. (something that is undoubtably happening under our own system)

I also think it drags on a bit could have easily been cut too 60 minutes and presented a bit better in parts. (bit slow in areas ad doesnt flow as well as it could)

I think she could have also dug much deeper into things if she had actually used a group of immigrants undercover to bring to light many these issues and provide more evidence, especially the evidence of ISIS in camps etc that was hearsay from other refugees.

But still a good documentary and possibly the most complete documentary on the subject.

AndyM Tuesday, 28 May 2019 at 08:49 am new

"I like much of what she has to say, but like any figure don't agree with everything she has to say"

Fair enough, just because you support someone who is racist and fascist doesn't mean you necessarily hold those views yourself.

Island Bay Tuesday, 28 May 2019 at 08:53 am new

Jeepers, ID. Lauren Southern?!?

You talk about 'so called refugees', but LS happily supports the influx wealthy immigrants to a country, i.e. white people who can buy their way in - as opposed to the evil 'queue jumpers', who desperately board leaky boats and gamble their whole lives.

NZ accepts 60000 immigrants a year, the vast majority of which come here for a slightly better life. People like me. Queue Jumpers.

We only take a paltry 1500 refugees, yet they are the people Lauren Southern vilifies.

We just loooved her visit to NZ

factotum Tuesday, 28 May 2019 at 01:11 pm new

Oi V.I., The Spinoff is an 'obscure link'? You're not a NZer are ya?

Here's an 'obscure link' featuring that other gronk of yours, Rita Panahi.

And it's a "vid other than surfing". Cool, but?

Been watching The Deuce. From the makers of The Wire. 3rd and final season coming soon.

Well worth it.

Also just caught the film Lucky. Harry Dean Stanton's (almost) final hurrah. Poignant and beautiful little film. Cool too. Like the man himself. Vale.

zenagain Tuesday, 4 Jun 2019 at 09:09 pm new

Wife loves Deuce, can't get into myself. The actress that's in it was in a movie called 'Stranger than Fiction', with a very restrained Will Ferrel. Good movie if you haven't seen it, clever writing.

Take note of the main characters surnames.

Blowin Friday, 14 Jun 2019 at 12:09 pm new

Cheers , Zen.

I watch a bit of that fella’s stuff. He does alright off the goldy.

A few keen kayak crew get out around here. Their set-ups look like they’d cost more than the Sea Wok . Seen them catch marlin. They’re not afraid to go wide or fend off big fish jealous of their catch.

Not my cup of tea. A little too close to the action. Some big animals getting around out there and some of them like to be intimate. The fella in this vid is a bees deck away from full blown panic.

OC is naturally funny & has you laughing from the get go...more of this please!

Goth Daughter & Spazz inventor Son are typecast but will drive yer round the bend.
Japanese animator that loves the Flowers (Family) to bits.(Like Munster's pet...Spot!)

Flowers household or default 'Mental ward'...attracts all manner of village idiots.

tbb is happy to say this show makes you more than laugh...it makes you come alive!
No plot Spoiler! Equally excellent & even stranger storyline awaits...dive on in!
https://iview.abc.net.au/show/flowers

tbb salutes the Flowers' end ditty...'that's some special songwriting'.
Luv that blank gen deadbeat sound...(give it a spin)

Here’s a big time recommendation.

Incredible series on Food Matters TV called “ Transcendence “,

Perhaps the most insightful and inspiring thing I’ve watched in years.

Discusses the way that the mind controls our lives and bodies. Featuring Whim Hof amongst an array of scientists, surgeons, athletes and crew who have achieved incredible feats.

Novak Djokovic and whim hof are some of the people featured.

Amazing show .

gray Tuesday, 16 Jul 2019 at 01:10 pm new

TBB hits the nail on the head! I've had some good laughs from Flowers, after stumbling across it a few weeks back.
You're right about OC, not so keen on her previously but - damn - she's a good actor and almost better than anything in this type of 'mad hatter' arrangement / black comedy.
Also check out "Fleabag" which is a pretty dark / black comedy (at times) too.

gray Tuesday, 16 Jul 2019 at 01:12 pm new

is it just me / Chrome, or does this 'reply' against a given (above) comment not work? didn't for the last one I did against TBB 'Flowers' comment above...

Watched 'The Great Hack' on Netflix and got halfway through the doco before I switched it off in...I don't know, disgust? Disbelief? Maybe the stop button was a bucket of sand and I drove my head into it.

All those headlines from two years ago about Cambridge Analytica perverting democracy, mining personal data via innocuous quizzes on Facebook, and now, two years later, what's been the feelgood hit of the summer on Facebook? Yeah, everyone's growing old disgracefully.

So what have we learnt?

Was curious enough to see how it all works and who those Big Data firms target, the "persuadables" as they're patronisingly called. The satisfaction in knowing you're not one of them is limited, as it's them, the weak of mind, who are told how to think by firms such as CA, and also how to vote. And the record so far is pretty damn compelling.

Quote in it somewhere that, despite mountains of historical evidence, we don't want to believe propaganda works because that says something unsettling about ourselves: that our beliefs aren't necessarily organic, formed via vigorous self-assesment, they can be someone elses beliefs sublimated via canny psychology into our own.

I kept thinking about ye olde pop culture futurists, Phillip K. Dick, Jaron Lanier, even Kraftwerk, and their voices that sailed into the future predicting the virtues of a great connected society, and all I could think of was a voice that sailed the other way, back in time shouting, "Fuck it. Stop!"

Couldn't time travel so I just switched it off.

Fliplid Friday, 26 Jul 2019 at 08:37 pm new

Absolutley jaw dropping doco. Not sure how far you got into the program, but Cambridge Analytica main man laid out how they manipulated a number of elections. The campaign of Do So in the Tobago 2013 election was the ultimate in bastardry. The premise was to get the African dominated party to lose out to the Indain dominated party. How to do it? Start up a fake campaign to persuade the African youth to boycott the election, the premise being that Indian kids will do as their parents tell them to. The Indian youth vote, the African youth abstain, result was a 6% swing to the Indian party.

The small nations were the testing grounds then Brexit and US were the finale.
Sad thing is that even if people watch this they will still keep their Facebook account, and worse it is infiltrating into all aspects of life.

A show of pure arrogance and cynicism

I’ll tell you a movie I shouldn’t love and which I still do love...

It’s a movie built around the virtues of authenticity and integrity, made in the ground zero of insincerity.

It’s a character forced to acknowledge an unbidden and overwhelming desire to be true to himself, played by a man whose reality is closeted in layers of fiction.

I’m talking about Jerry Maguire.

James Cameron doesn’t often miss his target . Whether youre his target or not is a different story.

Watch Jerry Macguire. Let yourself believe in a world where a person is as good as their actions. Swallow the overwrought septicness of it all and run with the idea that people can exceed expectations and reject the limitations they place on themselves .

But you’d probably want to be drinking whilst it’s screening if you really can’t handle the Hollywood saccharine barely concealed behind Tom’s blinding grin. Persevere, relax your cynicism and enjoy. Imagine you can be a better person.

Like Stu I found myself needing to hit the pause button struggling to comes to terms with what I was being presented with in The Great Hack I guess that's one of the best things with Netflix (aside from no ads) is that you can continue on anytime from where you left off.

So glad I did continue. Well worth persevering.

"Weapons grade techology" is no understatement for what was used to identify and target the "persuadables".

"Yes Facebook, of course we (CA) deleted the 417 profile point information of those 30 million users."

Fascinatingly disturbing stuff.

Might be worth rewatching Jerry Maguire after watching this. (Love that movie too btw)

Unfortunately, it’s completely unsurprising. But what a scary world we live in.

All horror aside, it’s fascinating to have confirmed the strategy behind the swings for the US election/Brexit (and others). Only need to target a small percentage of the total population to make a difference.
