Aside from the sensationalist title an interesting summary of the available products out there.

Good to see some independent (hopefully) research coming out in 2016. Hopefully the methodology/quality stacks up. Perhaps Swellnet could run an analysis on it when they do get published?

Like I said, if there's multiple attacks then take 'em out.

Gaz1799 Wednesday, 17 May 2017 at 04:12 pm

Blowin here's an article on the attack on the diver at Smoky Bay who was wearing the Shark Pod.

I checked out Victor Coppleson and this actually gives a bit of creedence to his argument about a hungry desperate shark willing to try something different because it was unable to catch his usual prey. It was 6 metres long so hardly an agile beast anymore. I remember hearing that the guy in the ab boat rammed it but just bounced off before pulling his mate in.

Also, for those greenies that think sharks don't breach here's a first hand experience from some Elliston chargers surfing a peak about a km offshore.

Blowin Wednesday, 17 May 2017 at 04:16 pm

I saw a white pointer breach about 150m off the north west WA coast a few years back when it was still accepted that pointers didn't breach in Oz.

As a former commercial fisherman I see a lot of misinformation around. I refuse to argue with ill informed green ,mud hut dwelling , tofu eating idiots on this issue, as they say, its a bit like playing chess with a pidgeon , they just knock all the pieces down, shit on the board and strut around like they won.

tubeshooter Wednesday, 17 May 2017 at 07:38 pm

But I'll throw in my two bob.. poor fisheries management , mainly from a lot of "researchers" who have never even stuck their big toe in the briny or so much as baited a hook .
however, previously this shark safe device was trialed off tweed heads ,

its since been taken off the market

I saw a shark breach at Leighton Beach, just south of Cottosloe about 20 years ago. Right near where they put the artificial surf reef. No one believed us.
Couple of people been eaten at Cottosloe since.

interesting Simba.....but ultimately pretty useless information. File under tell us something we don't know.

They tried to disprove the "mistaken identity theory" and ended up showing that white sharks, especially sub-adult ones, are opportunistic, ambush predators who will investigate surfers and bite them.
Whether they think we are seals are not is really irrelevant.

Thanks Simba..good link and good read.

simba Thursday, 18 May 2017 at 06:51 pm

Cant say hes not dedicated, even to the point of donating his calf muscle to a 8ft bullshark.....remember watching tis doco now and his mates saying keep your heart rate under control other wise the sharks will pick up that your scared .Looks like he was.

tubeshooter Friday, 19 May 2017 at 07:04 pm

Just on the subject of research. Australia puts out more shark research papers per capita than any other country.. Sorting the wheat from the chaff can be difficult. I've skippered a number of vessels tendered to various fisheries departments and private sector researchers , and I do know that some are serious, genuine and dedicated to their work. For others its more of scam or a junket .
So this article is no shock to me.. www.smh.com.au/national/taxpayers-shell-out-more-than-3-million-for-unr…

Blowin Friday, 19 May 2017 at 08:14 pm

Tubeshooter - got any leads on junket funding.

Sort of in the market for a nice high paying / low demand junket myself.

Will work - lackadaisically and sporadically - for fame and fortune.

Maybe you could put my name forward ?

tubeshooter Friday, 19 May 2017 at 10:24 pm

Well technically speaking, there's a difference between scam and junket ,I don't want to split hairs but for it to be a junket you would have to work for the government , tell me it isn't so

Blowin Friday, 19 May 2017 at 10:18 pm

No mate, I don't work for the government.

But I guess the same could be said about most government employees.

Thought I'd throw this in cause it's cool as fuck.....and apparently there are sharks there.

Ive had some really fun surfs at Fitzgerald River , always solo , but last time passed through a couple of months ago I just couldn't bring myself to get out there.

Incredible place - amazing scenery , amongst the highest floral biodiversity on the planet and fun waves with no one around 99 percent of the time.....and big, big fish.

Go there.

Apparently it was all just a big misunderstanding , no harm no foul.

simba Sunday, 21 May 2017 at 03:45 pm

Well shows what a disrespecting dickhead the author is in this statement..
.' Worst case scenario, he loses part of a leg or an arm, he becomes another Bethany Hamilton type celebrity and the surfing fanatics all over the world shed a tear when he paddles out for his first WSL heat after his recovery. A movie would probably be shot too, and little groms all over the world would idolize Mick even more than they do now.'

tubeshooter Sunday, 21 May 2017 at 04:41 pm

Hes a dickhead alright. That whole article has got more holes in it than a seal shaped piece of neoprene in S.A

tubeshooter Monday, 22 May 2017 at 01:18 pm

The Shark has since apologised to Mick , admitting that it "probably shouldve gone to Specsavers" , and " was actually looking for Strider Wasilewski". In Court , charges of attempted murder , and assault with intent were downgraded to "an encounter".. The Shark was placed on a 12 month good behaviour bond , and ordered to pay $25 for damages to Micks legrope. Prosecuters Slater and Flores, who had originally called for the death penalty , were unavailable for comment.
The Shark was last seen sharing a peak with a group of bodyboarders near Cape Town , where it also conducts Surfer Awareness classes for other sharks who've run a foul of the law.

Gaz1799 Tuesday, 23 May 2017 at 01:23 pm

Yeh I blame the parents for that one poor girl. That would have hurt like hell it had her whole body weight and fully yanked her off the pier.
These idiots need to learn that sea-lions are no better than wild dogs and they have absolutely no fear of people.

https://www.smh.com.au/comment/when-animal-rights-extremism-exposes-the-…

"Once again, the moral flaw at the heart of the beliefs of extreme animal liberators was exposed. It's the same misguided value system displayed whenever someone is taken by a shark in our waters. Rather than control the number of predatory Great Whites – a protected species for the past 20 years whose numbers have been growing in the past decade – we are subjected to sanctimonious lectures about how we humans have invaded their territory and should stay out of their way."

Another one at Evans. Hope they are stocked up on tags.

NSWDPI advise 2.4m M White Shark caught at Main Beach, Evans Head using SMART Drumlines. Shark tagged & released 1km offshore.

simba Friday, 2 Jun 2017 at 05:59 am

Well looks like triple figures soon as they have tagged 99....so maybe celebrations all round making a hundred.......i think drum lines are a good idea but probably will only work until the whites cotton on to avoid them.

https://www.facebook.com/Dorsal-Northern-NSW-Shark-Reports-665544923549…

freeride76 Friday, 2 Jun 2017 at 02:31 pm

this must be No 100, surely.

NSWDPI advise 2.18m F White Shark caught off Jiggles Point, Evans Head using SMART drumlines. Shark tagged & released 1km offshore.

Plus sharpes and lennox receiver set off.

DPI Fisheries advise: tagged white shark detected by Sharpes Beach, Ballina receiver at 05:10:00 AM (AEST) on 2-Jun-2017

DPI Fisheries advise: tagged white shark detected by Lennox Point, Lennox Head receiver at 02:07:00 AM (AEST) on 2-Jun-2017

Looks highly likely that high concentrations of juvenile/sub-adult white sharks is the new normal around here. The feeling is another attack is just a matter of time.

tubeshooter Friday, 2 Jun 2017 at 04:32 pm

If you listened to fisheries research around 10 years ago you might have believed that whites were hard to find..And I do think the more southern nurseries for juveniles/sub adults is creeping north.
These guys caught 11 whites in 10 days back in 2008 off Stockton beach nsw.. off the beach, no boat.. Tagged and released the same one was never caught twice. It was a bit of a slap in the face with a wet fish to some experts ,and I believe fisheries have since banned strapping a game chair to a four wheel drive.

russhook Saturday, 3 Jun 2017 at 12:51 pm

Not wanting to add to the hype , but after 25 years working the headlands and bombies from south Evans to Sandon l have never had a shark problem in there with sharks taking fish, but l have now middle of the day and 10 ft of clear water !!!, big bastards too! lucky these ones didn't jump in old mates boat last Saturday , massive fish schools moving also , so be careful out there , cheers

crg Saturday, 3 Jun 2017 at 02:22 pm

I remember saying this last year and we had 4 attacks in the next month. Just like last year you can feel it coming...I'm glad I'm o/s for the month...

udo Saturday, 3 Jun 2017 at 03:55 pm

What size beasts russhook ?

tubeshooter Saturday, 3 Jun 2017 at 04:16 pm

Are they Whites , russhook? Theres some big schools of thumper salmon running up the coast now, W.A as well, . Feet up

russhook Saturday, 3 Jun 2017 at 04:20 pm

l can only say they were a few feet longer than the 2.7mtr one that jumped into Terry Selwoods boat at Evans last week, bloody hell , cant imagine the horror. The drumline contractor at Evans tagged and released 3 in one day 300mtrs off the main beach recently , recorded lengths of 4.2 mtrs, fuk i bet he wishes the were dead too!!!
