Being a hawk is the default position for politicians for the simple reason that you cannot be proven wrong. If there IS a war, you prepared for it and if there ISN'T a war, then your military build up was clearly responsible for deterring the aggressor. Similary defence experts are always in favour of greater military expenditure since, apart from the ever present groupthink, part of it will end up in their pockets either through greater opportunities in their present position or in lucrative consultancies with arms manufacturers after they retire.
The real problem for politicians is to build relationships that prevent conflict occurring. Unfortunately this runs against the domestic political advantage of being a war time leader or being seen as tough on the latest hate target. If they weren't talking about China they would be talking about Iran, the middle east being the region that just keeps giving to the various RWNJs elected to power in western nations.
In the present case, China is the most powerful totalitarian state since Nazi Germany. They will continue to oppress internal dissidents and disregard international law as it suits them. Like very other major power in history, they will seek to secure their existing borders, gain control of disputed territories and build military bases in strategic locations. What they will not do is seek to invade territory to which they have no prior claim. In the case of Taiwan they will increase political and economic pressures but, given the logistical difficulties of an invasion (think D-Day X 100), and the consequences of any form of military attack, it is extremely unlikely that they would take that course. In the case of Hong Kong, its residents are the unfortunate victims of bad policy. A 99 year lease was only ever a good idea because those signing it would be dead by the time the reality of it ending came around. However much sympathy we might feel for them there is little that can be done except the granting refugee status to any of the obvious targets of Chinese displeasure. Some nations may be able to exert a degree diplomatic influence but given our recent ham fisted "diplomacy", we are not among them.
Finally, cyberattacks occur all the time from a great variety of sources including China. The US led the field with its cyberattacks on Iran's nuclear facilities with Stuxnet in 2010. The recent increase in Australian spending in cyber "security" suggests we are unlikely to be virgins in this field.

And feel free to consider me skeptical of "expert" defence opinion. Remember Iraq? Not to mention the gross historical over-estimation of Soviet Union nuclear weapons which was used as a justification to create an arsenal capable of rendering humans extinct.
