Melb's wave pond

Ted from the moon started the topic in Wednesday, 1 Jan 2020 at 02:41 pm

After some feedback on the pool. I am contemplating heading down to do a strike mission for a few days. Who has surfed it? Would you recommend doing back to back sessions or have an hour off in between? Is it easy to do an hour on the left then the right immediately after? How knackered are you after 3 sessions in a morning? What are the evening sessions like? Thanks.

Bnkref Friday, 17 Jan 2020 at 11:14 am

20 waves in an hour is huge. I wasn't counting yesterday but it felt like maybe 10-12 waves all up in the session (with 15 or so in the group). Do you know how often the sets come, Gaz?

freeride76 Friday, 17 Jan 2020 at 12:15 pm

20 sets in an hour.
12 waves per set, every 6-8seconds.

I think those are the numbers.

simba Friday, 17 Jan 2020 at 02:37 pm

Sounds as though the Slater wave pool will be put to rest as seems like urban surf have jagged the consistency to make a go of it.Any news on the coolum pool anyone ?

Nick Bone Friday, 17 Jan 2020 at 03:24 pm

Im really interested were this pool is gonna end up in a couple of years.

The novelty is sure to wear off and im curious to see what happens through the winter down here. Using Port Phillip as a guide, it gets much warmer and much colder than the ocean. I wonder if that will happen on a greater scale due to smaller body of water?

How much was the build? I read somewhere 40 mil (speculated) No clue to what all the daily overheads would be but a fully booked left and right throughout the day is around 35k gross profit a day. That would be 3 years 365 days fully booked left right to break even on the build? Hard to imagine there gonna hit that target. In saying that, i have no idea what a good turn around is in investors eyes.

I think basically what im asking is this pool commercially viable? All purely speculative But surely numbers will dwindle not grow? How would they combat that? Drop prices therefore losing profit margin? So many fucking questions!!

freeride76 Friday, 17 Jan 2020 at 03:30 pm

you'd have to think numbers would drop significantly in winter if no heating.

ringmaster Friday, 17 Jan 2020 at 03:34 pm

and that's when I'll be going if I bother. In the guts of Winter.

freeride76 Friday, 17 Jan 2020 at 03:43 pm

6am for the early in late July.
fuk that shit, but you'd probably have it to yourself.

Blowin Friday, 17 Jan 2020 at 03:47 pm

It’ll end up like the cinema.

The movies may make their bread and butter but it’s the food and drink that bankroll the deal.

Maybe the pool owns and leases the shops/ land / restaurants / accommodation surrounding the joint. Plus a slice of profits . Surely the photos are sold by the tub ?

Dx3 Friday, 17 Jan 2020 at 03:55 pm

I'll be going in a week to give it a crack, but I'd also be keen in winter due to lower crowd in the water and if I couldn't make the 3 hour round trip plus surf down the coast. Just suit up like I would in the ocean in July.
I reckon a lot will drop off during those months. Only issue is I reckon they would reduce their opening hours pretty significantly, making a before or after work Mon-Fri surf tough to fit in. Wait and see I guess.

Nick Bone Friday, 17 Jan 2020 at 03:58 pm

From what i saw a food truck (got Poutine, like a fancy box of chips, guilty pleasure) and a sushi joint. Surely more to come with gates open just get the punters through the turnstiles. Literally turnstiles and wristbands, im still laughing about the whole thing. Couldn’t stop laughing yesterday. Im not sure what type of laughing it was though.

P.s 20 buck per photo!

freeride76 Friday, 17 Jan 2020 at 04:19 pm

I went with a group of 4 mates. I was the only one who bought a photo and that was only because I needed one for the story.

lostdoggy Friday, 17 Jan 2020 at 04:59 pm

Sunrise in Melbourne June/July is not till around 7.30am.
And it can get pretty frosty in the Tulla paddocks.

lostdoggy Friday, 17 Jan 2020 at 05:06 pm

Are they gonna open up a warung with Bintang longies and gudangs to sit back post session and watch the others?

freeride76 Friday, 17 Jan 2020 at 06:04 pm

thats actually a really good idea.

Patrick0710 Friday, 17 Jan 2020 at 06:06 pm

I take the Holden Caulfield approach to paying for it.

indo-dreaming Friday, 17 Jan 2020 at 06:38 pm

I wonder if demand will start dropping in next few weeks or so once people have gotten over the novelty factor and everyone is back in work mode.

Maybe I'm a bit hopeful but I'm waiting to hit it after the holidays mid week, hopefully groups are a little smaller.

shoredump Friday, 17 Jan 2020 at 07:32 pm

Is the left better than the right?

freeride76 Friday, 17 Jan 2020 at 08:03 pm

I'm biased because I'm a goofy but I thought so.

watched a half hour in beast mode, didn't see a single made tube on the right.
looked more makable on the left.

shoredump Friday, 17 Jan 2020 at 08:12 pm

It seems to be that way going by the photos

lostdoggy Saturday, 18 Jan 2020 at 07:25 am

FR, did you go back to back from your right sesh to the lefts or had an hour between?
Would you recommend one way or the other?

freeride76 Saturday, 18 Jan 2020 at 07:29 am

back to back bruz.

um.....how's your fitness?

it's a workout, but if you've got reasonable fitness I'd go back to back.

back to back to back would be intense.

goofyfoot Saturday, 18 Jan 2020 at 08:07 am

Not to mention expensive as well

goofyfoot Saturday, 18 Jan 2020 at 10:41 am

Why was the pool designed so it would be offshore in a northerly wind?
Having a predominant wind direction of sw wouldn’t that be the way you’d face the wave?

udo Saturday, 18 Jan 2020 at 10:54 am

Webbers been quite ..

indo-dreaming Saturday, 18 Jan 2020 at 02:56 pm

"Why was the pool designed so it would be offshore in a northerly wind?

100%

Plus why design it to be offshore when the coast is offshore, why not design it to offshore when its onshore on the coast?

mickseq Saturday, 18 Jan 2020 at 03:29 pm

Why didn't they just build the thing on one of those 360 deg mechanical plates like how they have that rotating Sydney restaurant sitting on ? offshore forever

13th Jan tbb relayed that the BEAST was closed..here's that [facebeast] link...
https://www.facebook.com/urbnsurf/

(6th Jan) Day 1 & surfers start to doubt they're actually surfing any beast at all?
T. E : "Ran THE BEAST for last 20mins, unsure if it was FULL BLOWN."
S.C : "From the footage I saw that wasn't THE BEAST mode!"
R.G :"We were told yesterday that THE BEAST is for Pros-not for general Public."
D. J : "(insider) BEAST MODE has shredded wetties & others needing stitches!"
K.G : "Heard someone say BEAST MODE is only for private."

(9th Jan) URBNSURF reply...
G.Y : "THE BEAST is only on the right...it is not on the left!"
Damien Van Ryn : "Simple question that urbnsurf will not elaborate on is, are the public able to book THE BEAST mode session? Lots of people giving mixed feedback. URNSURF can you confirm this confusion."

URBNSURF Hi Damien - we have "ADVANCED BARREL SETTINGS" as part of our public 'Advanced Sessions' (which everyone has been loving), and are looking at developing "BEAST MODE SESSIONS" in coming months. It's a Heavy Wave and guest safety is number one at the moment as people get used to surfing in our lagoon. If you book the Lagoon "PRIVATELY" with family/mates you can choose wave settings you want, including "BEAST MODE".

URBNSURF Boogerz (Edited) responses:
K.G : "Disappointed to learn there is NO BEAST MODE offered to the public!"
"Even if they just open THE BEAST for one session a day!"
" I want mega EXTRA BEAST

E.M : "I'm glad they took away THE BEAST mode from the Public!"
"I'm sure they'll bring THE BEAST back as soon as they make it safe!"
"Barrel Settings B1-B4 > BEAST MODE is Barrel #6 (Wipeouts hit the bottom!)
M.G : "Once you surf THE BEAST you won't settle for Advanced wave settings."

(13th Jan)
Z.K : FREEBEAST+
J.P : [# RELEASE THE BEAST] stickers

tbb is still assuming that the Beast only does Stickerfests + Thor's Bucks Parties.
People / crew never got to manhandle the beast from day one...or so the story goes!

geek Saturday, 18 Jan 2020 at 03:53 pm

Having it offshore in a northerly is is great for those that live on the coast, anything to take a few Melbourne punters out of the real lineup the better. Still seems like a shitty business decision though

Nick Bone Monday, 20 Jan 2020 at 11:53 am

What would constitute as “private”?

Eg. 12 of us paid 120 to book out all 18 spots for a hour - is that private? Or we talking the whole day type thing? Fuck that

Craig Monday, 20 Jan 2020 at 12:25 pm

Thor's bucks parties! Hahaha

lostdoggy Monday, 20 Jan 2020 at 12:36 pm

Owen Wright had his bucks there too.
4 hrs I think.

Gary G Monday, 20 Jan 2020 at 01:25 pm

Hey TBB,

Gary reads the URBNSurf reply above as saying: "if you want a whole session of beast mode you need to book the whole session out with your mates. Otherwise you get what you're given"

Whatever they call the barrel setting(s) towards the end of the advanced it doesn't really matter: make it out of a deep one and you're not really gonna care what they call it.

Found this on uk version quite amusing
Bit like getting a pen license

goofyfoot Monday, 20 Jan 2020 at 04:08 pm

Gary g is it even possible to get a deep pit there? Im yet to see one if there is. I'm really not feeling the froth like some others

GuySmiley Monday, 20 Jan 2020 at 05:29 pm

How deep goes Gary like to go these days?

AndyM Monday, 20 Jan 2020 at 06:26 pm

Second knuckle on the first date.

After all, Gary is a gentleman.

zenagain Monday, 20 Jan 2020 at 07:23 pm

That is filthy.

But hilarious.

Gary G Monday, 20 Jan 2020 at 07:26 pm

When it’s Gary v the machine he really tries to stretch his limits, or those of his willing partner.

Gary has had one deep one that was sick, Goofy, but mostly just quick in and outs which aren’t Gary’s style, the caring facey lover that he is. Tbh Gary enjoys the later turn settings more.

Funny, after a week in the tub Gary was on your coast yesterday morning solo surfing 2-3ft shorebreaks breaking 25m from shore. Was definitely the most wavepool-like the ocean gets.

goofyfoot Monday, 20 Jan 2020 at 07:39 pm

Where was the call Gaz??

Gary G Monday, 20 Jan 2020 at 07:59 pm

Haha should have telegraphed it! Gary was aiming for Sat but elected to sleep in and knew he’d cooked it when he awoke to the sound of no wind.

Went down yesterday as punishment for missing sat, expecting it to be rubbish but it was actually a heap of fun. You get amongst it?

tubeshooter Monday, 20 Jan 2020 at 09:36 pm

A visit from Gary G , solo and only 25m offshore... and no security?

belly Tuesday, 21 Jan 2020 at 06:22 pm

Web enquiry form completed mid arvo yesterday and no response (cleared 1 working day rule). Super busy tomorrow but picking up the phone on Thursday if still no response.

Vic lost their Beast now tbb's pet microwave Beast died on the weekend! {R.I.P}
Beast fired up a wild 4cm cross chop A Frame left & right to both shallow ends.

New Beast clocked on this week...all of 1cm ....nearly cried it's so sad! (That's it!)
Stubborn Beast just sits there it does, tbb is trying to drag into the line-up!
Real My Health set back it is... "My Body Corporate for a microwave pool Beast!"

Honestly! How hard can it be, to stir up a Wavepool Bully in Australia?

Tales of Dr Moreau's 8 ft Surf Loch monster were hosed down quick smart!

tbb your comments at times are incomprehensible.

tubeshooter Wednesday, 22 Jan 2020 at 09:38 pm

I believe tbb is questioning the ability of wave pool people to create something bigger than a ripple ...Though I could be wrong , the workings of tbb"s mind requires a deep understanding of things which I know nothing about. However , there is order in the chaos , look for it ,

truebluebasher Thursday, 23 Jan 2020 at 05:07 am

Sorry Guys...nothing wrong with Tulla waves...outpatient tbb's new drug cocktail.
tbb has been too weak to make it to the surf since mid winter...crew are onto it.

Our Townhouse Pool's Microwave Beast with 4cm waves was indeed bashable.
On the weekend it broke down & new pump puts out a 1cm wave (Hawaiian scale)

tbb's wash up, merely points out, traditional Pool Rules of gearing down the waves.
None thought it would happen downunder, seems no wave pool is immune!
Least of all tbb's town house wave pool...that's real low, that is!

Yet another Willy Wonka's VIP pool Party gets outta hand .."Rumble / Lightning!"
Storm God Roary begged The God of Thunder to stop riding the wavepool Beast!

Pass the envelope...tbb awards The 2020 Goldie Gold Logie to The Tulla Tubbies.

Clare Valley and Sunraysia topsoil came with the rain and spread throughout metro area and beyond, what a mess. The pool is gona take some time to clean up if they are only using a creepy crawly!
