Glad you posted that.

After a few years away and coming home I noticed how pervasive gambling in Oz is. I can't believe ads are saturated on tv encouraging and glamorising gambling. Also, the ads telling you how to gamble responsibly or where to seek gambling addiction help. It saddens me that our governments at all levels have to rely on revenue from gambling or from new and creative ways to penalise and fine motorists. Seriously, is that the calibre of the decision makers in Oz?

I met my bro for a drink at the local yacht club up the road when home last- I saw a lady crying outside the toilet. Asked her what was wrong? She lost all her money on the pokies and had no money to get home or to get the kids lunch for school next day. I gave her $40 and asked her to promise me to go straight home.

Five minutes later and the silly girl was back in the gaming room gambling with my money. I regret saying this but I told her she was a loser and deserves everything she gets.

Gosh I hope with all my heart my words stung and she got her act together. And I should know, I was addicted to pokies 20 years ago. I stopped when I lost $800 in 15 mins which was basically my weeks pay. Haven't gambled a cent since.

Evil fucking things and so are the pollies drunk on the rivers of cash squeezed out of societies most vulnerable.

Supafreak Thursday, 19 Jan 2023 at 03:26 pm new

Agree 100% zen , my deceased dad blew $50,000 of retirement money in 2 years on the pokies , chasing lost money , mum wasn’t very impressed when she found out. Ban the fucking things Australia wide .

Pretty radical read, it's actually scary that people like Lydia with followings and positions can actually make completely untrue statements and narratives, that most of those people will actually believe and repeat like that.

Reality is almost all Indigenous, violence and deaths both men and women, abuse of children, rape's are perpetrated by indigenous people.

Its not helpful to anyone to spin the crap she does, she is a complete nutter, its crazy that she still can hold her political position after the things she has said and done in and out of parliament.

Reading the article is interesting in its not just her though seems like similar things said by other indigenous figures at these rallies around Australia.

Also interesting that it's not just her that doesn't want a voice, treaty or nothing, must be a lot of confused non indigenous people in these crowds hearing that message.

indo-dreaming Thursday, 26 Jan 2023 at 07:35 pm new

Well I'm afraid the stats all show it to be true..

It's not non indigenous men beating up indigenous women or even raping them or abusing their kids or murdering indigenous men or women, its why indigenous people are over represented in the prison system most of it is violence between each other.

Anyway supa im not wasting my time with you, i say white, you say black.

https://www.creativespirits.info/aboriginalculture/health/aboriginal-se… An inquiry found that Aboriginal women had been threatened by men if they gave evidence about child sex abuse [4], which led to no victims coming forward.

Professor Judy Atkins, an expert on trauma and abuse, says non-Aboriginal pedophiles show pornography to young Aboriginal males and give them alcohol on condition they bring young children to viewings [10]. "Some of them choose to work in [Aboriginal] communities because they know they have access to kids," she says. This happens also in rural towns.

fwiw, there is no disputing the history

and while this is very true...

"Sexual predators usually hang out where vulnerable people are , eg. Schools , churches, hostels etc etc"

most sexual predators are actually much closer to home, so to speak... this is true regardless of colour or culture...

the old 'stranger danger' is a bit of furthy, ...and we, ...and those ad canpaigns from 20, 30, 40 years ago were way off track...

my work makes a significant point of this in our training

australia generally, is actually full of a lot of misplaced paranoia re. child safety - those campaigns worked...

From the article…….Even today, Aboriginal women, raped and murdered, are routinely denied justice and the “rule of law”, and while perpetrators are both Indigenous and non-Indigenous, we know justice is stacked against Aboriginal women.

It will be a sad day for Australia if the Voice does not get up in my view. I think with both the Conservative side and the Lydia side campaigning against it, unfortunately it will probably fail. This will suit Dutton and the the 'right', as if this opportunity is lost, I think it will probably be a generation again before such a thing is publicly discussed again. The Lydia group have no chance of Australians accepting a Treaty without a gradual process, and although their points are valid in many ways, it just will not happen, a treaty that is. They really are putting some who would be supportive of them, against them. If the Voice does fail, it will also be a major political hit on the Albo government, one they may not recovery from with the outcome of another Coalition govt where any reconciliation talk will be lost. It happened with the Republic referendum and that opportunity was lost.
Cannot have perfect be an enemy of good, or at least an improvement of the current circumstances.
It appears that the Lydia groups are being very much appreciated by Dutton and his media mates. Sad.

According to the National Indigenous Australians agency, aboriginal Australians already have 50% of the Australian landmass under native title. They have full access to that land to live as they please and manage it as they please. That’s a fair bit of Australia to live in if you don’t like the English way of life. That’s what I’d be doing if it was mine.
