This is a rare case where i kind of agree with Sheepdog.
It really makes no sense for Facebook to pay, its basically just free advertising, i dont see how it negatively affects any news business, you still need to click on the post to lead you to the article on the website.
But i still think its kind of cool that the government is trying to take the angle they are, didnt they even get google to pay up something?
It's interesting to see those on the left try to decided on which side/view to take here, as the left hate big business like Facebook, they hate the government, they hate Murdoch which it seems a lot of it is about, and they are also always whinging big business doesn't pay enough.
Despite a corporate tax rate of 30% in Australia, FB pays roughly 2% on sales of advertising revenue of about half a billion Oz dollars.
I'd rather they not pay the big media houses for news content and just pay what they should in tax for the benefit of all Australians rather than comparatively few.
Zenagain. FB paid 17 million in tax last year. Not a lot of money for them. But Spotify, Netflix etc all structure their taxes the same. It's within the rules. Now, I dont like Facebook. BUT. I'm not gonna jump on the Murdoch extortion bandwagon.
Australia has to take the good with the bad. Sure, FB accountants Minimalize the tax they pay here. But think of these points;
1- In the last 11 years, EVERY politician , EVERY Party, Every Gov dept has saved BILLIONS in advertising, by having their own Facebook page. As we speak, Scrotum Morriscum has 615000 fb followers, many of who share his posts. For FREE. To get that reach on just ONE story on free to air tv, newspapers and radio etc back in the Bob hawke/Keating/Howard/Rudd era, we'd need an "unchain my heart" like ad campaign running into the 10s of maybes hundreds of million dollars. Now it costs nothing, a saving to the taxpayer.
2- Small businesses use facebook to grow and to therefore employ people AND PAY TAX - not just business tax, but payroll tax. Sooooo many little businesses have gained huge exposure on a worldwide market thanks to Facebook. Tax tax tax tax. Exports. Tourism. In fact if Australian business spent 600 mill last year in advertising, they must have a reason to do it. The advertising obviously works right? If 600 billion is bringing in customers and profit for Australian businesses, how much money did Australian businesses make thanks to fb? It aint a 1 way street.

Not disputing any of that Sheepy but while we're talking about FB I'll focus on that. They do quite nicely out of Australia and of course they're not breaking any laws in minimising their tax, it's up to the government to close those loopholes. I have the same view be it FB, Google, Rio-Tinto, Netflix whoever.
Aggressive minimisation of tax is the real issue imo, not further enriching Rupe and his ilk.

Yeah the reason HUGE companies do get tax breaks is because they DO employ a serious amount of people and/or create a lot of business.
For every action there is a reaction. Eg if you were to make FB pay more, They would simply increase their advertising rates, making "sheepys surf charters" pay more for his facebook boosts. Sheepy would then pass that on to his customers. In the long run, the small guy will pay, not Zuck, Not Rupert.
