There seems like a certain karmic balancing occurring when Pauline Hanson seems likely to lose her Senate seat to the Greens, maybe someone can explain it to her...
Adam Bandt was saying that they door-knocked 30000 homes in one electorate in Qld, which is a lot of grassroots campaigning, a lot of face to face conversations. It seems to have paid off for them.
Monique Ryan the Independent who looks likely to beat Joshy in Kooyong said they had 2000 people volunteer to help her campaign. That's nothing short of fucking incredible.
I read somewhere that 10 of the 14 seats that have changed hands have gone to women. All I can say is "Go girls".
I think the movement towards Independents is a real positive sign that democracy is in good shape in Australia.
Like Bonza said "Looking forward to some tough national conversations, negotiation and seeing real shit get done. I can only hope."
AS for LNP leadership and Dutton firming as their choice, this will pretty much ensure their position as the opposition for a decade or so.
Ps desire...not desiree... Touché!
Glad it's all said and done! +1
Scomo be gone. What a waste. They got what they deserved. A poor period of Australian pollitricks.
Stoked for the independents who played a role and took a stand. Positive action from many trying to create positive change.
It starts and ends with us. The future is fast approaching and the time is now. Australia deserves better, be it our National leaders or local communities. Take a stand, We are Australia and the future we create. From little things big things grow pollitricks or not.
Thank Christ someone threw in a rebuttal there.
Indo is delusional.
Glad to see Scomo out but like others I am still concerned about the next few years.
Don't get me wrong , I hope Albo can run with the ball and do a good job.. I wish him (and Australia) all the best.
I'm hopeful but also somewhat skeptical.
Stateside Biden is already less popular than Trump was at the same time. For all the hype and hope that joint had when they got rid of the orange man , their new saviour has been about as useful as an inflatable dart board.
Anyway Scotty , don't let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya,,,

Part of my career was working around the old copper network, and honestly it was a superb thing - for it's time. Did you know in event of disaster, the batteries in the exchanges would continue to power everyone's phone after power was gone, running the power down the copper lines? The radio tower network, the ancient coaxial repeaters, fun times.
I have a cunning ploy for the young one, who is normally way more modest, but has enjoyed last night and been added on socials already. (Hair like a young Terry Fitz at present + expensive fashion...) OK, so you take a flannel button up shirt as well, preferably warm, and sit on it/place it to a side. When going up to order drinks, cover the Tommy jumper with the flannel shirt, when back with drinks, doff the flannel. I reckon it would work.

As flollo mentioned - there is no rule that prevents a senator from becoming PM - John Gorton was a senator when he filled Harold Holt's booties - it is however convention that the leader be a sitting member of the house of reps and Gorton did move to the lower house after becoming PM - my old man was a Lib member and used to drive old bum face around Melbourne when he was in town...

Some on this site will be livid about this , heartless pricks .
Great news!
WA results were eye raising as well. Seems in Syd/Melb death for the Libs was teals, in Brissy it was greens, in Perth it was straight ALP. When speaking to Bro there recently, there were no shortage of f and c words for Scomo and the libs - his family all just got covid nailed, my SIL got the long form of it, trying to go back to work not fully fixed, school chaos with one teacher for 80 kids as so many staff sick with it. Even the south of river seat of Tangney went, which was an eye opener (& mum will be spewing when I talk to her later today...) Probably not best timing for an election.
What a nonsense this poor family had to go through. What are people so afraid off? Refugees staying permanently? Receiving government benefits? Unless you’re PR or a citizen you’ll receive fuck all and you even pay much more in income tax. It’s basically like being a 2nd class citizen. Not to mention HECS which only citizens can get so people can’t even get an education.
Some people seem to be worried about the cost but the only cost I can see is stupid government wasting millions keeping people in ambiguity and shuffling them from city to city, from island to island, in processes that take years to resolve.
Fantastic comment, re first preferences. Plenty of people in the same position, myself included. Fingers crossed the ICAC is a transparent model with razor sharp teeth.
Depends if you believe refugee resettlement places should go to true refugees who have NO home to return to like stateless refugees or high persecuted groups, or if you believe spots should be given out will nilly based on things like popularity and including people that are no longer classed as refugees because it's safe for them too return home.
Your lack of understanding of the bigger picture, only means those in most need miss out, but you dont see the ones that miss out so you dont care.
I hope this causes others to try to do the same causing the government headaches.
One of the comments was to the tune of: if Labor fall one seat short of government, and they would have won the seat if they hadn't parachuted Keneally and used the liked local candidate, how silly are they?
VJ no surprises re WA, Morrisons political attacks against WA early pandemic, backing Palmers attempt to bankrupt the state etc always meant there would be a swing.
On top of that we have centrist Labor state government who runs budget surpluses (no other state or territory gov would, even if they had the money) so the scare campaigns(Indo repeats ad infinitum) had little or no effect.
Note the Teal candidates central policies are actual Labours central policies and the failure of Labors primary vote on the East Coast is in part a success story from the propaganda fear campaigns run by conservatives for a long time creating the uncertainty for Labor.

Yep was going to say the same thing, well done on that comment JQ - this was exactly the position Ms and I were in.
The wife came home with a new teal-coloured top on today. Told me that anytime I'm not pulling my weight around the house or disrespecting her she'll go to the wardrobe and put it on.
A little silent reminder to lift my game.
Probably my favourite colour for a surfboard, I know you like red Stu
Ms informed me Scomo's wife was wearing a teal Carla Zampatti dress last night? Very ironic if true
Analysis pieces coming in:
"Anthony Albanese bet everything on a Scott Morrison failure and his bet has paid off handsomely.
Morrison has delivered for Labor. He has not only lost power. By surrendering all traditional Liberal values, he has cost the Liberal Party its bedrock support base. He was a bulldozer, all right. He bulldozed his party into electoral oblivion."
https://www.smh.com.au/politics/federal/the-quiet-australians-spoke-and…
Nonsense. If the case goes to high court and the high court decides against the government then I trust the high court whoever the government is. Framework should be simple; bridging visa until the decision so people can somewhat participate in the society. They can work and pay taxes same as others. None of this nonsense with random visa categories which allow locking people up for as long as it takes to prove the point.
Some good news at last looks like Jacinta price will win her seat for the first time, hopefully this lifts her profile further and she can shake some things up.
This women needs to go further in politics, she's only 41 driven, smart, tough as nails and conservative.
If only the LNP took her and one day made her leader, even some on the left would be confused and have to vote for her a female indigenous PM.

Does The (Un)Australian know something that even the AEC doesn't know yet? ABC still showing 71 to 51.
"Labor has enough seats to form a majority government, The Australian is projecting.
A batch of new seats were called this morning, pushing Labor to 77, one more than the 76 required and averting the prospect of a minority government."
https://www.news.com.au/national/federal-election/federal-election-live…
please please no!
my dream scenario is slipping away
ie. labor forms a minority govenment with the help of independent/s, not needing the greens to form government
(nothing personal to the greens - just that some of their demands were plain ridiculous - actually, maybe it's a bit personal too)
and kristine kenneely losing her seat was the icing on top ...a very sweet icing it is...
not certain yet, but a few commentators saying labor will get there
oh well, you cannot have it all...
btw Simon Birmingham was excellent last night, as well as the other Liberal fellow who noted
"You can't be a conservative if you've got nothing to conserve", regarding house prices.
Wasn’t it called a few hours ago ?
he was, this morning too
amazing what sense a liberal can speak now morrison is out of the way...
still cannot believe they didn't ditch him
they've also lost some of their best talent / most palatable / almost electables in the process
frydenberg, tim wilson, zimmerman, and another I've forgotten
the party really is quite gutted
I wonder if some of the norms might come back now morrison is gone?
bishop etc.
On the contrary, I think it’s yourself who’s overlooked the nuance.
My voting preference runs in accordance with your own almost exactly. In previous years we would have both voted ALP first, now we don’t. The way we both believe the ALP is lacking is replicated throughout the electorate and this is proven by the fact that ALP took 3 in 10 votes throughout Australia.
What happens when a sitting MP loses their seat ? Are they basically unemployed but with full government benefits? Just wondering.
Do you believe that this is a plausible theory ?
Not really. Sounds way too complicated. The average person in the street isn’t captivated by the machinations of politics, they just don’t want some fckstk pulling the levers of power. The plan you describe is 4D chess compared to simply voting independent because you can’t stomach either of the major parties. The major parties will be in public denial about this because they’re whole schtick is predicated on the electorate not cottoning onto the fact that they are only “Majors” due to tradition and this can be overturned in an instant if enough punters give them the arse.
The idea that Australia will realise it can happily exist without the ALP and the LNP keeps these fuckers up at night. Not so much a decade ago……very much today!
What nuance is that exactly? Seems like just reading the literal trends of the numbers.
I can both believe the ALP are lacking and support them as a government...
All I'm saying is that looking at the primary vote and extrapolating that to say 'only this many people support them as a government' is not really true.
Did you click on the Twitter post ? Seems it’s exactly what some labor supporters did .
"...The major parties will be in public denial about this because they’re whole schtick is predicated on the electorate not cottoning onto the fact that they are only “Majors” due to tradition and this can be overturned in an instant if enough punters give them the arse..."
tim wilson is on tv doing this right now...
"...i dont think we should read too much into this... blah blah blah..."
meanwhile political commentators capable of objectivity and whose opinion I respect....
(patricia kavelas, annabelle crabbe)
'...I think we've entered a new age...'
'...the majors fail to represent modern australia...'
etc. etc.
and, zoe daniel couldn't contain the disdain on her face for contemporaey labor when asked if she would support them in a minority government
she didn't say no, but her contempt was obvious as she vehemently said "...we'll see..." and that she definitely won't be joining the labor party anytime soon
twitter political nerds are a different breed to your average 'get me the fuck out of this booth and away from these oddballs' voter
"The idea that Australia will realise it can happily exist without the ALP and the LNP keeps these fuckers up at night. Not so much a decade ago……very much today!"
I think this could continue to be a real game changer.
Australia has realised, despite the best efforts of the majors to convince us otherwise, that voting for an independent or a minor is not "wasting your vote".
The sky is not going to fall in, on the contrary, this change in voting habits is going to take power away from these two stagnant, crooked institutions.
And now the fuckers actually have to sit up and pay attention.
The Libs are deeply arrogant and thus slow off the mark and it's cost them dearly.
Labor smelt the change prior to 2019 but couldn't successfully communicate their pitch.
The ALP and the LNP are cabals. If only there was as much motivation to bust up these corrupt collectives as there is to bust up unions.
ICAC now.
A good start would be to drop the cases against Collaery and McBride and finally give some support to Assange and tell the yanks to back off.
This would be a test of Labors resolve to follow the rule of law and do what is right by our own citizens instead of throwing them under a bus to cover up incompetence and criminality
Yes!!!!!
