When an OX rides a board, it needs some meat.75 litres is the volume of my 9/6 Padillac

AndyM Sunday, 22 Dec 2024 at 08:51 am new

I like volume as much as the next guy but 3 3/4 inches might be pushing the limits.

7 years old, almost, and she's had a good week. New wax job and some minor ding repairs. Here's to another 7, old chook!

Held up nicely IB

Several hundred surfs under its belt, most of them at very rocky spots. Incredible glass job.

And if this Southern Ocean low ends up looking anything like this, we'll get a whopping long-period groundy. Please!

Any feedback on how the desert twin rides, how the design compares to the desert storm?
Cheers

Caml did you ever get any Feedback from Ryan Watts on his 8'0 Desert Twin ?

Just had a similar experience - again :-)
Not 10ft Cloudy, but strong 4-6ft Outsides with three rogue bomb sets - all of which I managed to snag, thanks to my trusty old 6'10 DS. 7 years old now, so I may need to go and see Webby about a replacement.

It was mostly 6ft and solid the whole time we were there, couple 6-8ft days and just generally heaps of power and girth. Tradewinds blowing which made for wooly take-offs.

Paddling the DS into the line-up felt so deluxe, like wearing a suit of armour, like being ten feet tall after scratching in on a 6'3".

So smooth ,with the weight and the entry rocker, paddling in felt so damm good. The whole time I was thinking shit, if I had the balls I could paddle into a 10-12ft wave on this. Really, really nice loaded up deep bottom turns and with the area in the tail and quad set-up , easy riding arc off the top.

Nice stable platform to hit the brakes, bury the arm and stand in the barrell. You could ride forward, like an old single fin because of the area and thickness up front.

Only foible was getting trapped into inescapable tube rides down in the shish kebab section, that didn't feel so good getting creamed on the reef with a heavy 7'6" and four fins.

To be honest, it almost felt like cheating, and also to be honest, I was a bit over-gunned. I already spoke to Webby about getting some smaller ones made. Would have loved to have had a quiver of Desert Storms over there.

Big boards= rewards.

Very reluctantly I've sheathed it in a cover and put it under the house, knowing, unless we get a miracle I won't be able to ride it at it's full capacity until next autumn/winter.

Fuck, I'd love to get it out at maxing Outside Corner.

Somehow makes a super heavy 8'6 fun in small waves. Really fun!

freeride76 Wednesday, 18 Jun 2025 at 02:27 pm new

twins?

Island Bay Wednesday, 18 Jun 2025 at 02:29 pm new

Yep. Christenson uprights (old Captain Fin, but I think the new Futures are the same).

Craig Wednesday, 18 Jun 2025 at 02:37 pm new

Does it feel almost like finless but with enough hold to to big, drawn out cutbacks etc? I felt similar with upright twins on my 7'4".

Island Bay Wednesday, 18 Jun 2025 at 02:41 pm new

Never tried finless, Craig.
It just feels normal, but fast and loose. So much rail that less fin doesn't bother it. And I could do reasonable roundhouse cutties.

How about Trying only using the Rear Boxes with 2 Small Quads In them ...
God Speed Style.

Supafreak Wednesday, 18 Jun 2025 at 02:58 pm new

I tried britt merrick twins on 7’6 DS ( the fat version ) in 3-4 ft junky snapper/rainbow , couldn’t really find much difference riding as a quad in same waves .

Island Bay Wednesday, 18 Jun 2025 at 02:59 pm new

Hah, I reckon that would be very loose. But worth a go one day.

Here's Rusty's fin placement on a twinnie gun for Jamie Sterling. Doesn't look that different from what I'm running - would love to know the numbers

Island Bay Wednesday, 18 Jun 2025 at 04:24 pm new

Let me rephrase the above: I reckon it would have very little hold, and be oddly stiff. But it got me thinking, so I'll try it soon.

udo Wednesday, 18 Jun 2025 at 04:58 pm new

Even the Rears from a Split Keel Quad Set...Who Knows what may Work .

Ray Shirlaw Thursday, 19 Jun 2025 at 09:40 am new

.........yeh nah, starting to segway into a perverse Duo-type design...why not a Ben Llexcen starfin in each front box. Rad!

Any feedback on how they go?
