What’s the deal with customs ? Is that an import tax ? Fark they don’t miss ya . I can relate to the solo mission you were on , hard to focus on the surf when your mind is straying to what lurks beneath. I have shark eyes stickers on my local boards for some minor mental relief haha. Anyway enjoy the new stick and let us know how your fin experiments go .

To be fair I only had to pay for the customs stuff as Beachgrit offered me a thank-you "Pick any board, anywhere" deal.
If I had to pay I would've just waited till I was doing a OZ mission.

Was over $500 to get it through customs on top of the $600 freight to get over from Oz. So keep that in mind NZ crew looking to get one. Next time I'll fly over and pick it up!
First surf was a bit weird. 6ft plus at a local deepwater bombie that moves A LOT of water.
Just on dark, slightly stormy, fresh choppy swell, overcast with just me out. Spooky to say the least, so I wasn't in the most relaxed mood. Paddles smaller than I thought it would with zero issues duck diving. With the thickness even at 20 wide sitting on it was surprisingly rocky.
Anyways, paddled no worries in, but with the forward volume I found myself lying further up on the board and jumping up a little too far forward and having to shuffle back to get a bottom turn in. This with the fact the wave has a steep take off that morphs into a fat section where you bottom turn had me regretting surfing it as a quad. To be fair I wasnt in a relaxed headspace and was needing a buddy out there, so it was a bit of a straight-up, no-frills, 4 waves and get the fuck in surf.
I want to try it again at this wave as a thruster. It's my first board with Futures (Impressed, makes way more sense than FCS} so will buy a thruster set. The other wave I got it for is a faster down-the-line wave which I know will appreciate the quad. (Pyzels Quads BTW}
Webster recommended the Tokoro's so will probably give them a shot.
Thoughts on fin sizing for a board of this size? I usually roll with large fins but thinking dropping down the mediums might be wise.
But there you go, first surf done and dusted with a burning desire to get it in the water again!
avoid large fins with the DS model, large fins are for small boards with concaves and sharp rails. the opposite of a DS with vee, soft rails, max volume..so in powerful waves big fins will cause drag and stiffen the turning ability. if the waves are weak and gutless then big fins help to provide some drive/ speed....
if waves powerful then use smaller fins, try it and report back thanks guys

My 7'6 hasn't seen a lot of action since moving from my old haunt, but that was a mistake. First day of the recent run of long period swell I took it out in barely OH waves. Friends laughed when they saw it, but I ended up getting three nice little barrels and some solid carves. And I was of course hopelessly overgunned.
The week before it was a treat in 12-15ft faces.
It's a refined, versatile semi gun.
For anyone wanting the stretch quads I’m pretty sure they are no longer being brought into Australia according to the Futures rep I know. I like them in fishes and shorties in up to 5ft waves, they have a nice inner foil that makes them feel lively, I haven’t tested them in step ups, the rears are too big for me at 5’9 65kg in bigger boards. I have a 5’11 DS and I use F4 fronts with 80/20 foil 3.625 quad rears. Feels very stiff with bigger fins like camel said and I haven’t found a thruster setup that works for me yet.

I love the feeling, especially with the quad set-up.
Feels like the two quad fins and swallow work in conjunction to provide more drive and just a better feeling underfoot - it feels more positive to me- wherever you go rail to rail you have fins engaged and one tip of the swallow in the water.
Feels much more stable on whitewater rebounds too.

Just picked up one of these (Desert Storm Twin) 6'2 x 19 3/4 x 2 3/4 36 liters as a mini step-up.

How different is the fin placement on that and how does that feel in comparison.

. I haven’t ridden one however when I was picking up my boards I had a look and was interested . Webby said it’s one of his biggest sellers . Let us know how it goes if you pull the trigger on one . A friend bought a 6’6” wacko recently and absolutely loves it .

Hey Lost, the fins are probably 20mm closer to the tail on the DS Twin. The fact that there is a lot less board combined with thinner rails gives it a real lively feel. Handles late drops and barrels well also. It's the perfect size for those days that aren't quite solid enough for the 6'6. Pic from yesterday:

My mate that bought the 2nd hand 8'0 DS from Anglesea debuted it yesterday at big Bells. He was frothing. First time for him on a board bigger than an 6'8.
1/3rd life crisis, just purchased a 6'6 (38.5), Webby couldn't have been nicer, recommended the f4 quads (i'm a slight 70kg) - detailed review to follow

Hi Udo. Yeah great to be out in the bigger stuff with a large board. First time stepping up from the 6’8 to the 8ft. Paddled well, kept you clear of trouble and duck diving not a problem. Didn't have the right fin set up (thruster) and was really only getting used to it.
Wasn’t really sure where to position myself on the board when paddling in. Tried sitting further back than i thought felt right and that seemed to work. Sometimes i feel though the nose of the DS pushes a bit of water when trying to paddle into bigger ones (rather than knifing in).
As i say, nice board and still experimenting.

Id say he’s 5’11 and 90kg , fit bastard, he wears the power ranger helmet as he’s been scalped at 12ft scar reef , knocked out cold at lassos ( duck diving got sucked back over ) and knocked out and drowned at 6’- 8’ chopes , got revived and then got secondary drowning that night . Wife makes him wear a helmet these days .
