Tunes

Alright, time for some discussion on what yr all listening too. My iTunes inventory is getting a little stale so I'm up for some inspiration.

Currently loving The Drones' album "Havilah".. incredible songwriting and some of the best recorded guitars and drum I've heard in a long time. I'm a little late to the party with this album but it's on high rotation at the moment and will probably stay there a while. I've seen these guys live once (Fowlers, Adelaide) and fortunately they're incredible on stage too. Can't wait to see them again.

@ Patrick

I like your taste, I'm a big fan of Magic Dirts first guitarist Daniel, IMHO their best stuff was when he was in the band, im sure it was him that came up with those cool lead guitar riffs on the first EP's, although the album with Dave Thomas was really good and Young and full of the devil good too, but they lost me after that, IMHO they kind of went from an amazing band to some really cringey stuff.

That Deep Wound cover was great Indo.

In the spirit of musicians covering their own songs, here is Selene Vigil of 7 Year Bitch.

If wacky Al Jourgenson covers are the go, his cover of Do ya think I'm sexy? with The Revolting Cocks is something else. If someone could tell me how to imbed videos, that would be grand.

factotum Saturday, 19 Sep 2020 at 11:51 am new

Go to the YouTube share option, Hiccups.

Al is a weird unit. In a cool way. His early, early stuff is hilarious.

And Lou is in Dinosaur Jr, Info? Wow! And that wasn't a cover? No waaaaay, really?

IMHO (fuck, what's that supposed to mean, BTW?), Lou is a bit of a fop. Mascis would concur IMHO. They've always been a prickly pair. Actually, the prickly mainly runs one way.

And since this covers theme has popped up, I count 4 Dylan examples. Most covered artist, period?

Hiccups Saturday, 19 Sep 2020 at 11:35 am new

"And since this covers theme has popped up, I count 4 Dylan examples. Most covered artist, period?"

Most likely. The Beatles would be up there.

Hiccups Saturday, 19 Sep 2020 at 11:38 am new

Classic Donovan cover. Played pretty faithfully. Starring Gibby Haynes who while we're on the subject of Al, was on Ministry's classic, Jesus Built My Hotrod.

All good albums. Have you heard Ragged Glory? Do yourself a favour.

Saw NY play A Day In The Life in 2009 at the Myer Music Bowl - Melbourne, it was 40 degrees during the concert - here he is at Glastonbury

blowfly Saturday, 19 Sep 2020 at 08:46 pm new

I had the Ragged Glory CD but it went walkabout a few years ago so I haven't listened to it for a while. I will dial it up on Spotify next time the house is empty so I can do the decent thing with the volume.

I like that Spiritual Cramp, Hiccups. Both types.

As a weird conjoining aside...

Watched the Tony Alva doco the other day. Forgot about his Christian Death So Cal gothic stage. Wild ads.

Christian Death even get a literal shout out from the Green River/Pearl Jam dude that used to skate, Jeff Ament.

Not a bad bio doco.

Is it just me, or are people starting to really and rightly take the absolute piss out of St Nick?

I'm onboard! And I've seen him heaps of times in the past. Got plenty of albums.

Maybe it started of late re: the ridiculous hair vanity...then the Israel recalcitrance...then the 'PC gone mad', 'cancel culture' bollocks...then stuff like this?! And the music...hmmmmmm

PTSD?

Hiccups Sunday, 20 Sep 2020 at 09:22 pm new

Really, he's been an easy target for piss-taking since the get go. Doesn't make him any less of a genius. Also, forever a legend for his Red Hot Chilli Peppers quote. If you don't know it, google it.

factotum Monday, 21 Sep 2020 at 12:25 pm new

Who was taking the piss before? And who is now? I reckon there's been a noticeable shift.

I found him to always be a funny fucker...an old quote: I'm Australian. Even we don't know when we're joking and when we're not...but now?

Where's this bloke and that perspective gone? What's he doing?

I'm serious. PTSD. It's understandable. After the horrendous death of his son.

Maybe he needs to go into a Buddhist temple like Leonard Cohen did. The Red Hand Files ain't cutting it. For his self.

It'll start leaching into his real work. Maybe the time will come when someone (with The Boatman's Call vinyl and Dig Lazarus Dig tea towel and Birthday Party tee-o*) will legitimately remark, "what the fuck is this garbage?" when he comes on the car stereo.

* I own none of these items and never have, by the way. Well, maybe the tee-o at some stage. And The Boatman's Call on CD. And an Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus tea towel.

Anyway, here's a cover from an album of 'em.

blowfly Monday, 21 Sep 2020 at 12:06 pm new

"Is it just me, or are people starting to really and rightly take the absolute piss out of St Nick?"

Well it is 32 years since his artistic peak with "Tender Prey" and if it wasn't all downhill from there it was at best an undulating path towards the middle of the road though, to be fair, never quite making it. His whole artistic persona has become passé. How an Australian who, to the best of my knowledge, had never even been there, managed to generate a believable southern Gothic style, is a tribute to his imagination and our obsession with all things American.
As far as PTSD goes, yeh probably, in fact almost definitely, in the sense that if he walked into a psychologist's office and started talking about his grief over what happened to his son, they would diagnose it. Beyond that he seems to have found a way to cope through the Red Hands thing and more power to him. If it is all a bit pretentious at least it attacks that "shut up and suffer" attitude that is still so popular amongst men of all but the most recent generations. Anyway you can forgive a bloke a lot after coming up with this.

Self-analysis by Michael Dransfield

you tire of it, this
cleverness
there are too many poems
two walls of shelves a desk
a safe all crammed with poems

your letters turn into poems
your poems into drivel
soon there will be
no-one to write to
then you will claim you are misunderstood
