Alright, time for some discussion on what yr all listening too. My iTunes inventory is getting a little stale so I'm up for some inspiration.

Currently loving The Drones' album "Havilah".. incredible songwriting and some of the best recorded guitars and drum I've heard in a long time. I'm a little late to the party with this album but it's on high rotation at the moment and will probably stay there a while. I've seen these guys live once (Fowlers, Adelaide) and fortunately they're incredible on stage too. Can't wait to see them again.

Shoegaze? love these guys.

Looking at the young crusty types featured previously, and all the banjos, and the general mood of late, reminds me of this:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/14m685MfWqvtz9LNr4W9BVp/skiff…

My old man was in such a team back in Scotland in those days. Still strums the banjo now. Fnar fnar.

And this bloke was one of the biggest names in the 50s in the UK. Had tickets to see him in the seaside town I was living in with my English bird in the 00s, 'cos of the old man and the records and tunes he played, and then unfortunately ol' ledge died beforehand.

Vale.

Evenin' all. For the last seven years, local enforcer / music lover Barry 'Baz' Cornell has hosted “Tuesdays With Baz” at Toonalook Community Radio (TCR) FM... Here are the 100 most requested songs by Toona's listeners. Link if ya innerested: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5pk7gnwGaR3GsBFjUHSMWk?si=lkZnqSQMSlG…

Looks like Barry has great taste.

Nice work fellas , I’ll give that a spin in the near future.

Abmay Tuesday, 22 Sep 2020 at 08:35 pm new

R00ney yeah I'm pretty sure they all played there. Spent many nights at Ric's dancing (if you could call it that) and absolutely drenched in sweat. I reckon I'd lose 3 or 4 kilos in that place some nights.

R00ney Tuesday, 22 Sep 2020 at 09:11 pm new

Yeah Abmay, the beauty of Brisbane in summer.
No matter who or where ever you went to see them, you'd sweat more than you drank.
spj, rsh 'hick and devastations was all on the same night and spencer and roland played an arvo show i think.
All for nix!

R00ney Tuesday, 22 Sep 2020 at 09:28 pm new

Jebus Gra,
Baz is certainly switched on! Not much filler in there, in my opinion.
That one's gone into the library, thanks Baz.
Bottle of Fur. What a track!!!

Mutton Birds first up got me thinking of all my fave NZ bands.
The Hasslehoff Experiment, Bailter Space, 3D's, Straightjacket...

I gotta stop, that's a quality list, coulda used it on 102.1fm back in the day for sure.

Gra Murdoch Wednesday, 23 Sep 2020 at 10:44 am new

Hey ROOney, the NZ sounds were amazing weren't they. Early '90s and Straightjacket Fits' album 'Melt' was my all time fave (still top ten) – I remember when they toured that album and came to play The Patch in Cooly. I was frantic with concern about getting there in time – no advance tickets and I was sure it'd be sold out... turns out probs less than 50 punters attended. The band were amazing (and saw the funny side, doing stadium “Hello Cleveland" Spinal Tap callouts etc), and though they deserved a better crowd, I was selfishly stoked to have 'em in an uncrowded setting. What an extraordinary band they were.

stunet Wednesday, 23 Sep 2020 at 11:04 am new

Yeah I dunno, bit dissappointed Baz didn't include any Screaming Jets songs.

On the Flying Nun stuff: Didn't enjoy Straightjacket Fits as much as I did these two bands.

(Same song also copped an adequate cover on The Johnny's 'Grown Up Wrong)

Gra Murdoch Wednesday, 23 Sep 2020 at 12:18 pm new

Yeah Stu. I think Baz was spewing the Jets didn't get up either, but he was committed to that 'most requested' criteria. Jeez: The Bats, The Chills, The Clean – just spectacular stuff... I do reckon Straitjacket Fits were next-level at that expansive, atmospheric layering and stuff – tracks like A.P.S just fricken soar hey.

blackers Wednesday, 23 Sep 2020 at 12:28 pm new

Choice choices boys.
The Chills were pretty good too.

classic blackers - I came across that Jesse Stewart track down that crust folk punk rabbit hole the other day, and that one (and others) by Days n Daze that you suggested Patrick. and many others...

Jesse's tune 'Marauder' was a good one, intense, check it out if you havent. I found myself singing it when out in the garden later that arvo. How did his rehab go?

tiger Wednesday, 23 Sep 2020 at 03:21 pm new

Fuckin' classic gra! Thanks for the playlist. Nice soundtrack to get me through a torrid morning pulling tin roof sheets off the house! Toonalook/DA just keeps on giving, in my view you guys have surpassed the swellians for irreverent surf related observation. Thanks too to Ben and co for their part in bringing this gold to us!

R00ney Wednesday, 23 Sep 2020 at 04:21 pm new

Yeah Gra, had some moments like that in Byron back in the day.
When the Piggery was getting quality bands and you'd turn up thinking faaark, ''i'll never get in" only to find bugger all in there, cos no one knewe who they were.

Swervedriver played the Northern back in 99 i think, got there nice and early, totally blazed only to see so few people there, that they nearly canned it! Much discussion ensued.
Show went ahead with 20 or so punters and ended up being a top night, everything evened out perfectly.
Pretty sure they broke up on that tour, thankfully reforming.

That's the best way to put it Stu, the Flying Nunn stuff, it was all very good. Excellent compilation if you can get it too.

You could have ended up worse places Greenjam, given Patrick’s Miley links. The back story to Jesse Stewart is fascinating, busker makes good based on a YouTube upload (Cold beer) cover of a “comedy” rapper’s song. Entered a “why I should be famous” competition, meeting none of the criteria and winning it, and becoming famous!

https://www.thetelegram.com/lifestyles/made-famous-by-donnie-dumphy-jes…

There is a live version of Marauder recorded at the award ceremony.

Haven’t come across anything about rehab, but that scene seems pretty hard core.

As a rule, I've always avoided any song that's about surfing. Almost always it just ain't right.

But.. I gotta put aside my prejudice for this Hot Snakes track (released in 2018 after an apparent fourteen year break). Unreal tune... the big hook for me is the descending guitar cadence in the verse. Great guitar tone too.

And even better, they fucken nail it live!

Ian Brown of Stone Roses fame apparently only wants to be adored by covid deniers these days if this abysmal Qanon sermon of song is anything to go by.

AndyM Friday, 25 Sep 2020 at 12:01 pm new

I love the Stone Roses but that song is terrible and in any case, Ian Brown has been cooked for over 30 years.

blackers Friday, 25 Sep 2020 at 12:37 pm new

Quite a few from that scene were cooked at the time Andy. An amusing look at some of the Hacienda crew's views on the pandemic:
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/sep/20/whats-the-story-w…
BTW Hiccups, that Trashmen song was the final song in the Cramps' encore when I saw them at Festival Hall. Lux did the full crazy, was escorted off by Ivy, wrapped in a robe. Funny stuff.
Does this count as a song about surfing?

Anyway, surfing yeah?

Hiccups Friday, 25 Sep 2020 at 01:05 pm new

@Blackers After reading that article a commentator summed up just what I was thinking with this. "The weird thing about Stewart Lee's satirical pieces these days is that you're never quite sure whether they're not straight up reportage"

Man I wish I got to see The Cramps. I was a little young to cross the Straight to see them on their last tour here.
