I heart WOTD

The wave of the day does it for me big time. Nice work Steen Barnes , Shaun Anderson and Swellnet.
In one photo you've encompassed everything nice about surfing. If I was a wanker I'd say that it was perfect except for the fact he is in a wetsuit. Which it is , it's perfect .....except for the fact he's in a wetsuit.

This makes me think there's an official Swellnet rule that you'll only publish shots if the photographer gives you and Craig the GPS coordinates haha.

Most photogs don't give away the location unless we ask so it's more a guessing game than anything else, and I gotta say, Craig is very, very hard to beat.

In this instance I had a hunch which checked out with Shieldsy.

The result is a mental surf atlas filled with more spots than I'll ever have time to visit.

All expenses paid surf trip Stu?, all you need to bring is your atlas and board :)

Send an Uber and I'll meet you at the airport. The WOTD Tour begins.

Might try and get a car park at Coolum and walk up.... :)
Looks like Noosa will be on the cook, only spot up here....

A long walk for 1 or 2 waves !
Your better off sitting in the car park for
4 hours, until someone leaves.

Big tides. The platform might be worth a look.

indo-dreaming Saturday, 1 Mar 2025 at 11:25 am

It's such an amazing set up those points, we can whinge about the crowds, but i think we should be very grateful that the area is preserved by that national park.

Imagine if it was all houses it would be terrible.

AndyM Saturday, 1 Mar 2025 at 11:34 am

Agreed, crowds aside, that's some of the most beautiful scenery anywhere in the world.
What a magnificent series of headlands, and from ground level the view up to the north is stunning.

andy-mac Saturday, 1 Mar 2025 at 01:02 pm

Beautiful spot, used to love surfing it as a grom back in 80's..
Too busy in car park and water for me now.
Just had a sniff around southern SC, think Noosa only option.

Haha saw a bit of that... ah to be young ey.
Few Passenger Pale Ale's. Good thinking.
Went up to cartwright after lunch, victory at sea and didn't see a good one.
Apparently better in morning....

It’s actually a tip of the hat to McTavish… Jarrett just sold it, unsurprisingly.

southey is heading Nth this week . But usually surfs a little further south than Jayden .

something about the bucolic nonchalance of the staggered wotd foreground crew brought it to mind.
Stephen Sondheim actually wrote a successful broadway musical in 1984 based on this French painting from 1884. one of those super weird things, that is either quite cool, or speaks to overfunding in the arts, haha.

Well, now there’s a true songwriter and composer. He wrote many a song that others gained fame for.

I agree that WOTD setting is bucolic and could also be a slightly altered and imagined in part to be a version of Australia Felix as well.

One of them, I love, ‘Send In The Clowns’, very appropriate for most Swellnet forum contributors, including yours truly. AW

basesix Tuesday, 18 Mar 2025 at 05:44 pm

everything you learned in calculus comes back to you when your kid says 'why do I need to do this?' and you think 'that's what we said'..

(if that happens just rest an assuring hand on your kid's shoulder, look them in the eye, smile and say 'because your generation is going to have to rebuild the world while hiding from AI in concrete bunkers; the rebels will be working in analogue.. you're too young to understand that yet, but someday you will'.)

mattlock Tuesday, 18 Mar 2025 at 05:59 pm

Good idea basesix.
'that's what we said' dosen't seem to cut the mustard.

I quite like Streeton's work but prefer Boyd's. I have a soft spot for both as my boy shares their name. Got a Boyd print in my laundry.
Thanks for the offer Blackers but I'll give it a miss at the mo.
BTW i have been loving the WOTD lately.
Bystrom's one of Kiira the other week was insane.
Shield's one with the cloud parallel to the lip is great as well.

Mattlock. Good stuff fella.

I love art, in particular Australian art.
My favourite male international artist is David Hockney from the US ( Englishmen)

GuySmiley and myself have a real love of Australian art, sounds like you do as well.
I love them all. Boyd, Streeton, Tucker, Rees, etc.

We love the way they depicted early Australian times.

You’ll never know much about the future without knowing a lot about the past. AW

Eight bells - the Well, 2022

mattlock Thursday, 20 Mar 2025 at 10:58 pm

heyya basisix
Is this the new tunes thread?
I listened to bits of the Eight bells song and I get it. A little monochromatic maybe. I'm a bit time poor to invest my self in that at the mo.
It's the sort of thing that may get a run when having Saturday night sesh at my mates. "Later" in the evening of coarse.
His thumb tends to get a little heavy on the volume button and we sit companionably beyond conversation until the police arrive.

I'm to much of a dumbarse to be able to post links on SN but I highly recommend having a listen to Don Walker's latest albumn "Lightening in a clear blue sky".
I'm enarmoured by it. Huantingly beautiful. Unashamedly cliche. Obliqely profound. Proudly vulnerable. An Australian icon.
You're probably already on to it or it may have slipped through to the keeper.
Anyways. In answer to question you asked in theother thread. No. Got stuff on with kids already. And I might need a bit of sleep in.

batfink Tuesday, 25 Mar 2025 at 01:39 pm

I know that island in today's WOTD. Know it well, seen it from just about every angle.
That entire stretch of beach has been terrible for a long time now. Storms, sand movement, too much dunecare has ruined so much of it.
I suspect a bit of a hoax. Note deep gutters inshore, terrible paddle out to break in sharky waters, short sandbank can create the illusion of a good wave for an instant, stand up, too fast, runs into a deep gutter.
Paddle in through sharky waters.

But nice pic.

Like a few islands off the east coast, was used for bombing practice during war years.

Westofthelake Tuesday, 25 Mar 2025 at 02:59 pm

Hey batfink, we must be neighbours because I know that place well also, and yea it's been a while, but damn it occasionally gets good with no crowds. Only seen sharks a few times, but heaps and heaps of dolphins. I have dozens of photos but never posted them thinking someone might recognize our local 'Uluru'...

Great wide angle shot today. Would have been damn close to that nose and those fins. Good work. And nice fin release

I meant no disrespect to both surfer and photographer , it's a great shot. The one I am thinking of was of Margo at Nias and at the time I thought it was radical as. Might be a bit biased but for such a good surfer I have always found Margos humble demeanour refreshing.
Of course this is a very worthy WOTD shot.

Last December I stopped in at Bali for a day and scored Keramas with a bit of swell. Dylan W was out there and I saw him repeatedly try a regulation layback snap but deep in the pocket rather than the shoulder.

He made some, blew others but the number of attempts made it obvious he had his mind set on the turn.

So I was pretty thrilled when David sent a bunch of photos that included Dylan doing that exact turn, only on a bigger wave and with a better backdrop.

Like you, I think it's an amazing surf photo.
