The wave of the day does it for me big time. Nice work Steen Barnes , Shaun Anderson and Swellnet.
In one photo you've encompassed everything nice about surfing. If I was a wanker I'd say that it was perfect except for the fact he is in a wetsuit. Which it is , it's perfect .....except for the fact he's in a wetsuit.

Pies v Hawks is my dilemma round @AW!

Speaking of needles do we have nettles here like in the UK @AW?

My Yorkshire mate fell off his bike last week into a nettle bush and while everyone was worried such was the number of nettles in back and limbs he dryly pan faced reacted with “I’ve been fucking nettled”

GuySmiley. Hi mate hope you’re well and warm.

We sure do, we have introduced nettle and one species of native nettle ( Urticaria incisa ).

The introduced ones are from, Europe, Africa and North America.

Bedsides its stinging and pain inducing capabilities, its culinary and medicinal attributes are outstanding.
Lowers cholesterol, good for our blood and brain.

Great in salads.

I remember my early days of visiting the in-laws in Sweden, walking through their forests was a stark reminder to watch where you place your feet/boots particularly in Summer when wearing shorts. AW

Hey @AW, thanks. What do you think about Pindone baiting and are you aware it’s currently being used down the far end of 13th?

GuySmiley wrote:

GuySmiley. Hi pal.

I’m well aware of Pindone baiting, I live in a farming area, farmers buy carrots that have been treated with the stuff.
I understand we need to control rabbits, I dislike them, they chew down local grassland flora and are a huge problem.

Problem, another chemical compound entering the food chain.
What happens to bird of prey who have a chew on a rabbit carcass ? These are the in ya face problems.

Dog walkers should always heed caution, if your dog eats it you need to act urgently.
I was unaware of its use in the area, thanks for informing me.
We have people on the ground on 13th beach, volunteers from our Field Naturalists Club who monitor Hooded Plovers progress on the beach.
It should be known that all mammals including us are harmed by Pindone.

Us humans are horrible organisms most of the time. First rabbit in Australia was introduced near Winchelsea at ‘ Barwon Downs’ , so essentially the chain of problems starts with us. AW

GuySmiley Tuesday, 3 Jun 2025 at 08:15 pm new

Hi @AW, yeah it’s toxic to humans to all animals and birds that directly and indirectly consume it, horrible shit. The council is also baiting foxes in the same area.

@GuySmiley.
Again we are catalysts for the environmental problems.

We introduced the fox for ‘sporting shooters’ way back.
As a mate of mine always says when he hears the term ‘sporting shooter’ , he replies, not so sporting for the animal that’s about to be shot .

Imagine if animals could fire a gun.

We’d all be dead as part of retribution.

I hear or see foxes every night, we have an enormous chook enclosure built by yours truly, it’s like Fort Knox. Beautiful animal in the wrong country. AW

That is a great shot , at first I thought the left had a surfboard trail, pretty big wave I’m guessing .

If that’s the reef/course I’m thinking of I remember playing golf there once with my wife, decades ago before kids. There was a dunny between fairways and my wife needed to go … anyway as I waited for her on the fairway next to my buggy she let out a scream, I looked around to see the door flung open and out she flew with her nickers/shorts around her ankles … in her own words she explained as I went to sit down a bullfrog had jumped out of the pan and through my legs … we still laugh about it today!

GuySmiley.
Hi mate. Hilarious.

I think that what you were actually doing was playing amongst the very finely mown couch with your eye and club on the 20th hole if I’m reading correctly between the lines.
And you both may have previously paid a visit to Bill Murray’s (CaddyShack) greens keeper shed to toke on some of that regions finest. I’m just saying.

Bullfrog, good decoy. Ribbet.AW

My dentist and I have a running joke about the 19th hole.

If it's where I'm pretty sure it is it's one of my favourite places in the world.

Zenagain. Hi fella. Nice to hear from you.

I hope you, your wife and dogs are enjoying your early Summer weather.

Males will always have jokes about the 19th hole, it’s how we are wired (DNA)

I’m pretty sure it’s the favourite of most.

How’s your bird observing coming along?

I’m off in 2 weeks to the Maluku Islands, NE Indonesia up near NW New Guinea and SE Phillipines, jungle bound. I’m so excited. AW

@AW, behave yourself! Besides I’m more of a Happy Gilmore fan. That trip is also memorable for a massive win on the pokies …. a past time for mugs … while my wife was playing the 10 cent machines slowly losing her allocated $5 I was watching a movie with a beer, anyway on the way to the dunny I dropped a dollar coin in the last machine before the gents door and won a $400 jackpot … having cashed it out, had my pee, purchased a celebratory scotch I resumed watching the movie. Pretty much paid for the trip that one coin.

GuySmiley. Hi mate. Hope ya well.

On a bleak day, it’s good to laugh, thanks. You hit the jackpot on a couple of occasions it appears.
Don’t you love age, something in us triggers good memories and stories that keeps the home fires purring.
Recollections fire up our youthful past.

I think it was Reform a couple of months ago who said,

‘If you don’t tell your stories, the only person you are kidding is yourself’, very true I say.

magic @Guy.. how incredible is it we have hi-viz space as metaphor..? that we can fucking hook into it as a meaning, imagining ourselves through the way rock and time and gravity waves interact.. knowing there's no uniformity.. spheres are as unique as randoms in a share house.
(just don't stick prog rock into any of it : P )

..while we are whistling away in this stinky little corner of space, in an outer edge of a flat galaxy, in our scattering of quirky planets and moons around an average sun, that had deigned to allow a little bit of life in a window on a small planet that has been a ball of fire or ice for 97% of its being, and has wiped out 99.9999% of anything that grew and evolved in that window..

embrace the now. looking up at the moon this month has made that easier. fucking wicked. we are lucky monkeys indeed.

Apologies for being a little cryptic

I spent 3 weeks there in ‘93 when it was in the war zone. One of the best surf trips of my life, with my new girlfriend who I am still with, everyone treated us like we were sisters so it was cool to share a bed. There were waves every day. Some really lovely Aussies to hang out with and a Norwegian motorbiking across Asia who was covered with duck tape from learning to surf on the reef. I am stoked to see stories of local women surfing in the region now, that is definitely progress!

crew got pretty turned on around valentines day while watching the cricket by a potential wave behind the Galle Fort cricket ground, SW I think.. any intel on that area, @Stay? @shoredump's mate copped a few at Mirissa around that time, @etarip is organising a fantasy group trip for a bunch of us, but it's on a lot of people's 'hope I get the opportunity to go there one day' lists.. any stories would be appreciated!

Had 8 days of super fun waves at Rams Right in midigama on trip there .
Was end of month trip travelling around and just hired/ eventually bought board (snapped it). Groundhog day, 2/3 foot every day with a couple of bigger days, many sessions by myself or just a couple locals or other tourists.
Worst left in the world called lazy left down the road packed every day with euro pommy types learning to surf.
Surfed also a Beachy at Arugum by myself, didn't get to surf points, but was fun.
Saw waves at hikadua, but didn't surf, bit of a scene there.
Beautiful country, trains through centre are incredible, food delicious, friendly people and just an all round great travel experience.
Awesome wildlife to see, elephants like kangaroos in Oz country, everywhere.
Well worth a trip!
