I heart WOTD

The wave of the day does it for me big time. Nice work Steen Barnes , Shaun Anderson and Swellnet.
In one photo you've encompassed everything nice about surfing. If I was a wanker I'd say that it was perfect except for the fact he is in a wetsuit. Which it is , it's perfect .....except for the fact he's in a wetsuit.

yeah whats going on swellnet as you only run WOTD photos of girls......so sexist...blabla bla ...lol.......top photo.......maybe a couple interviews would be good.

stunet Thursday, 22 Mar 2018 at 01:40 pm

Sure would be. Stay tuned.

Island Bay Thursday, 22 Mar 2018 at 01:48 pm

Tahlija! What a wonderful beast she is, and great to see her on WOTD. I have a feeling she would smoke a few CT surfers - women and men - in heaving barrels.

She and Cambo are such stoked people.

udo Thursday, 22 Mar 2018 at 01:58 pm

Yes a legend of a woman.....catches bigger Jewies than Freeride to.

Craig Thursday, 22 Mar 2018 at 02:28 pm

Haha saw that, some monster fish!

GuySmiley Thursday, 22 Mar 2018 at 03:31 pm

udo Friday, 23 Mar 2018 at 03:35 pm

Nicely slotted Rowls.

zenagain Friday, 23 Mar 2018 at 05:44 pm

Supersuck in a steamer?

yocal Wednesday, 28 Mar 2018 at 10:48 am

I have to say that spot looks like the funnest wave on the planet when it finally breaks every 4 or so years. Clark Little must be envious.

GuySmiley Wednesday, 28 Mar 2018 at 10:07 pm

great waves pity but what's with the PWCs?

GuySmiley Thursday, 29 Mar 2018 at 07:46 am

now we're talking, great shot

pittsy Monday, 2 Apr 2018 at 09:49 am

todays start with a Q? wow if so

AndyM Monday, 2 Apr 2018 at 10:56 am

"Date brake" - Haha, good to see Aussie vernacular hanging in there!

kirwoods Monday, 2 Apr 2018 at 08:38 pm

Looks light that 'secret' break that's apparently regularly packed out!

mrkook Tuesday, 3 Apr 2018 at 01:47 am

Date Brake - I think this has to be caption of the year from swellnet.

Well Done.

simba Wednesday, 4 Apr 2018 at 06:31 am

the steel blue sledgehammer......very moody but awesome.

indo-dreaming Wednesday, 11 Apr 2018 at 07:26 pm

I saw footage the other day of that sucky short right in PNG that has been WOTD about ten times.

Nice wave but OMG it's about 5 meters long it's like the peak at Krui

simba Wednesday, 25 Apr 2018 at 06:40 pm

Very fitting photo for today...........respect.

crg Tuesday, 1 May 2018 at 01:40 pm

Aargh...know that feeling...
Undergunned, too late, fins took forever to grab, couldn't set the rail...
Straighten out, gun and run, enter the washing machine...
Hope it's not the first wave of the set.

stunet Tuesday, 1 May 2018 at 01:49 pm

If it closes out...well, that's one thing. But if you witness it reeling off like an impossibly perfect version of big Cloudbreak, then that's gotta sting. Let the 'what ifs?' begin.

BTW the photos was taken at Telescopes during last Monday's mega swell.

Craig Tuesday, 1 May 2018 at 02:00 pm

Big Telescopes :o

simba Tuesday, 1 May 2018 at 05:06 pm

So its a big wave but how big in feet.........10, 12 or more ?

fitzroy-21 Tuesday, 1 May 2018 at 05:13 pm

Bloody hell, solid Telescopes. Imagine how big Icelands and the likes would have been................

goofyfoot Tuesday, 1 May 2018 at 06:24 pm

8 maybe 10
Our Hawaiian friends would say 3ft :-)

Edit - now that I’ve seen it on the computer rather than a cracked phone screen that’s 10 no dramas

Craig Tuesday, 1 May 2018 at 05:16 pm

10ft+ for me. It's easy 4x overhead and after pitching.

lostdoggy Tuesday, 1 May 2018 at 05:42 pm

What would Vic Local call it?

Island Bay Tuesday, 1 May 2018 at 05:52 pm

10ft in Welly. And a beautiful wave.

indo-dreaming Tuesday, 1 May 2018 at 07:15 pm

Wow would never have thought it was Telescopes, seen some pics from that swell of it, but not that big...that is solid Telescopes never seen it even close to that size.

Like Fitzroy said imagine Icelands it would have been double that.

Would have been interesting to see little novelty spots in the areas start popping up.

Nick Bone Wednesday, 2 May 2018 at 02:56 pm

Ummm. Thats fucked. Its like a bigger reverse version of chopes. I still cant fanthom how people survive wipe outs in that shit.

Craig Wednesday, 2 May 2018 at 02:58 pm

How are the conditions. Super perfect, amazing light and so big, what a day!

Sprout Wednesday, 2 May 2018 at 04:52 pm

Interesting to watch raw footage of tow-ins out there. A lot not really barrelled like some pics suggest. They're so fast it's almost a head dip (of death). The paddle guys though, far out.

indo-dreaming Wednesday, 2 May 2018 at 05:19 pm

Me too, spins me out how people don't get seriously hurt more often.

Also spins me out how when these guys do get hurt, they can go back and surf these same type of waves.

That photo above, seriously ,makes my chest tighten up just looking at the pic, imagine in real life, it looks like a few story house thick.

zambezi Wednesday, 2 May 2018 at 05:49 pm

I like the crowd of ghosts spectating from the waves heart.

AaronS Wednesday, 2 May 2018 at 08:38 pm

Beautifully described mate. Very apt too.

simba Friday, 4 May 2018 at 07:08 am

Gulp......worst nightmare but did he get thru or are they still picking up the pieces?

stunet Friday, 4 May 2018 at 07:15 am

Nup, didn't make it through.

goofyfoot Friday, 4 May 2018 at 07:53 am

WTF

stunet Friday, 4 May 2018 at 07:59 am

From Tim Bonython:

"Certainly the day of days. Bodyboarder Shane Ackerman swam for his life literally when this monster came thru. Yes, Shane survived but only just. He got sucked over and held down without an inflatable vest. Shane was a lucky man to survive this moment."

We've got an extensive gallery going up shortly.

timcosh Friday, 4 May 2018 at 11:06 am

Charging it Shane. No matter what you ride that's pushing into the unknown.. Where do we go from here?

timcosh Friday, 4 May 2018 at 11:08 am

New level?

batfink Friday, 4 May 2018 at 11:52 am

What the fuck is that thing?

davetherave Friday, 4 May 2018 at 12:52 pm

wow!!!

greyhound Friday, 4 May 2018 at 05:10 pm

Where do you try to dive on that thing. Point of pic being taken, or paddle up it and then try.???

stunet Friday, 4 May 2018 at 05:56 pm

Good question but I'm not sure that it matters where you dive. The whole wave becomes the lip.

chook Friday, 4 May 2018 at 06:01 pm

Hitchiker’s guide to the galaxy has the answer to that one...

“I thought,” he said, “that if the world was going to end we were meant to lie down or put a paper bag over our head or something.”

“If you like, yes,” said Ford.

“Will that help?” asked the barman.

“No,” said Ford and gave him a friendly smile.

simba Friday, 4 May 2018 at 06:41 pm

Remember when that huge swell that hit cloudbreak a few years ago and Ian Healy had to swim thru that 25ft blue nightmare...well this is sorta like that except Shane is at the bottom of this thing....how do you control your fear in this situation.......full legend.
