Another angle of matahi's bomb. Easy take off.

Unbelievable

Blowin Wednesday, 12 May 2021 at 04:05 pm

Thing is, the slow motion and athleticism of the surfer actually do make it look easy. All you gotta do is air drop those few feet, before landing like a cat at the base of two stories of murderous swell, then spear a straight line through the bowels of watery hell and into the relative safety of the channel. How hard can it be?

Island Bay Wednesday, 12 May 2021 at 05:24 pm

Yeah, in my dreams...

But for all those almost upside down takeoffs at Teahupoo, I really love when someone sneaks in early to one there like it's nothing.

@goofyfoot

Haven't surfed it yet, but have observed in real life and seen video. Very very good on its day.

Moving to the area soon, and will report back.

He's a master is ol' Mitchell, and in most, perhaps all, aspects of board building. Turns the 'jack of all' cliche on its head.

Doesn't seek the limelight either. Reckon if he was in the US he'd be considered in the very highest echelon of board builders and commanding near five figure prices for his boards. Instead he's simply plugging away up there in the backwoods of Urunga.

Blowin Sunday, 16 May 2021 at 08:15 am

Too true. Ive got a set of his switch blade ( switch knife?) fins and I’d be lost without them. Better get a back up set...

Stu - Care to name a shaper commanding five figures for a custom board? The mind boggles at that kind of self belief/ justified skill / audacity.

udo Sunday, 16 May 2021 at 08:18 am

They are CNC machined i think / but done locally
A nice fin eh ?

velocityjohnno Sunday, 16 May 2021 at 03:26 pm

Yes agree, the difference is noticeable. Now the cat's out of the bag I'd better do this as well ASAP. Been surfing 3 decades now and I just haven't seen a time where a swap saw an increased performance until these and it was like night and day, same board. More joy is FCS1 tabs, so the legendary peanut can be used so take-that flex killing big modern fin boxes...

How to describe? There's a right locally with slabs of rock underwater that kind of 'platform' the wave and sometimes they lead to shut downs in front of you at speed. Watching my son, the bottom turns were noticeably quicker, more speed was held through the turn too, and the stall point of the board seemed removed - so a section with about 15m of white water that would normally catch him, he did the bottom turn and foam climbed 3 times - very quickly - and made the unmakeable. Backhand, it goes vert and holds the speed and again, if pushed to where it would stall, keeps going. And this was on fins for my weight - his weight is the next size down! Imagine...

So yeah I'd better get an order in, will include a 2+1 for my retro self. Shhhhh, no more posts on this yet haha

How much are Outer Islands? Basic Indo board, no bells and whistles.

udo Wednesday, 19 May 2021 at 03:26 pm

Barton you fucking Wanker - just chasing more $$$

Blowin Wednesday, 19 May 2021 at 03:40 pm

So what’s the go with Sharkbanz? I can only imagine they might function as some kind of tourniquet if you slid it high up on the stump of your severed limb.

Oh wait....is Barton suggesting that Shark Banz repel sharks? Lol.

Fliplid Wednesday, 19 May 2021 at 05:12 pm

Well, the study has been done. Control board with no shark deterrent bitten 96% of the time. With Sharkbanz attached 94%, so technically he might be legit in saying they deter sharks

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6120439/

But then again, “Neither the SharkBanz bracelet nor leash affected the behaviour of white sharks or reduced the percentage of baits taken.”

Such a great page this one. Phenomenal stuff.

I tried to call in on Mitchell Rae’s place in Urunga a few years ago, would dearly love to check out what was there. Unfortunately I think it was a public holiday and no one was around. Bummer
