I heart WOTD

The wave of the day does it for me big time. Nice work Steen Barnes , Shaun Anderson and Swellnet.
In one photo you've encompassed everything nice about surfing. If I was a wanker I'd say that it was perfect except for the fact he is in a wetsuit. Which it is , it's perfect .....except for the fact he's in a wetsuit.

God i love you Bells!!!! When those lines are pouring in. Great shot.

heals Friday, 18 Dec 2020 at 01:54 pm

Today's wave is fearsome as a tyger.

bluediamond Saturday, 19 Dec 2020 at 05:36 pm

Today's WOTD,.....i used to have that right hander all to myself for many sessions or just one or two others....lived in some units behind the sand dunes and across the road on the creek. Magical place and can handle some good size. Great pic.

crg Sunday, 20 Dec 2020 at 01:11 pm

How good is that middle peak looking!
Is old mate on the hill a non-surfer oblivious to the wave quality or wretchedly stuck spending some quality time with the missus?

blackers Sunday, 20 Dec 2020 at 01:17 pm

It’s a great shot, shows the different effects of the bathymetry on the same wave front. In answer to your question CRG, I hope he is a non surfer, the alternative you gave is all too familiar...

Jono Sunday, 20 Dec 2020 at 08:09 pm

Great shot - so glassy, and fun. Would not be having a picnic with the Mrs if that was going down.

Craig Sunday, 20 Dec 2020 at 10:01 pm

Oath!

tubeshooter Sunday, 20 Dec 2020 at 11:41 pm

yeah the rug on the grass is a not a good look for old mate.
"yeah um ,, er , I might meet ya back at the car in about an hour 'babe'. Here's the keys.. Won't be long , promise .. Then we'll go have lunch with your parents after that OK,, It's all good ,,, back soon"

Nick Bone Thursday, 24 Dec 2020 at 09:22 am

Another Otto classic. Looks can be deceiving. Thats no man land right there..

keano Wednesday, 6 Jan 2021 at 09:52 am

That's just downright f'ing cruel

Bob Sacamano Wednesday, 6 Jan 2021 at 10:00 am

agreed.

AndyM Wednesday, 6 Jan 2021 at 10:36 am

Isn't it just.

Bnkref Wednesday, 6 Jan 2021 at 11:09 am

Yep. Geez I'm miss the warm water surfs.

zenagain Wednesday, 6 Jan 2021 at 12:56 pm

I was thinking the same. Currently 2 deg outside. That pic is just dreamy.

GuySmiley Wednesday, 6 Jan 2021 at 02:05 pm

You are not worthy Zen

Dreamy stuff indeed.

I've been trying to imagine the mayhem in the water when they reopen the borders to Indo. Just how many frothing, desperate, wave starved surf animals will be feasting on what's available?

goofyfoot Wednesday, 6 Jan 2021 at 08:42 pm

ha ha would you believe I was thinking the exact same thing today crg, wonder if it would be a wise move to give it 6 months or so

dandandan Wednesday, 6 Jan 2021 at 08:43 pm

God I don't want to think about it haha. I had to unfollow dozens of accounts on Instagram I follow as all I would see is 54 000 followers talking about how they're there on the first flight (I will also be there on the first flight).

udo Wednesday, 6 Jan 2021 at 08:48 pm

Give it 6 mths before you hop on a low cost carrier to get there
Few short cuts in recommisioning planes that have been parked up for 12 mths plus ?

dandandan Wednesday, 6 Jan 2021 at 09:44 pm

Undoubtedly. I usually fly fancy these days with Garuda or Qantas as others occasionally refuse to take an 8 footer, but even those guys haven't been flying much! I'll swim if I bloody have to...

D-Rex Wednesday, 6 Jan 2021 at 09:59 pm

Jay Moriarity's was wave of the milennium, never mind the day.

zenagain Friday, 8 Jan 2021 at 09:48 am

Le Grand Fromage the man behind the lens behind the shot today,

Nice.

Bnkref Friday, 8 Jan 2021 at 03:44 pm

Very good.

Ben will need a few more to catch up to Craig.

thermalben Friday, 8 Jan 2021 at 03:47 pm

Thanks guys.

Bnkref, Craig doesn't have kids, so I'll be forever playing catchup. Though at least I can live vicariously through his lens.

crg Friday, 8 Jan 2021 at 07:38 pm

Great shot Ben, knowing that spot there wouldn’t have been too many non-JetSki takers...

AndyM Friday, 8 Jan 2021 at 07:41 pm

Water movement through there is nasty.

thermalben Friday, 8 Jan 2021 at 07:58 pm

Was only one paddler in the water when I was there, no skis (they're usually further down the beach anyway). Is much bigger than it looks too.

bluediamond Saturday, 9 Jan 2021 at 12:16 am

Awesome shot Benno. Getting caught inside in front of those rocks on a solid day is one of the scarier surfing experiences to be had.

I focus Monday, 11 Jan 2021 at 10:23 am

Judy Scanlon's photo today scores a "whaoo" from me.

Nice capture Judy.

Westofthelake Monday, 11 Jan 2021 at 10:37 am

Yes agreed I focus. Bit of mind surfing going on in this part of the world this morning...

Bnkref Monday, 11 Jan 2021 at 01:05 pm

x3. Will be a while before it looks like that again.

joesydney Monday, 11 Jan 2021 at 01:45 pm

The guy on the first photo reminds me of a story I read on here (I think?) about surfing in Hawaii and a session at Makaha where the author describes being yelled at on a wave by a big Hawaiian in a booming voice "DO SOMETHING"........ :-)

Solitude Tuesday, 19 Jan 2021 at 08:22 am

Nice shot. Not sure how big that is.

Has anyone hiked in a surfed it at 6 foot? What's it like?

stunet Tuesday, 19 Jan 2021 at 10:01 am

Reckon it'd be about six foot, Solitude.

Few days back we ran a similar shot from Chris, only it had Marti P pulling in, legs slightly bent, so say 5-6 foot maybe.

Don't know for sure, but I'm guessing that'd be the lower end for size out there. Seems like it doesn't reach full shape til 8-10 feet.

Solitude Tuesday, 19 Jan 2021 at 10:49 am

Yeah was thinking it'd be borderline breaking at that size. Would be fun to get out there. Have hiked in just for a look. Was beautiful, had this real energy to the place. Was flat though.

Pops Tuesday, 19 Jan 2021 at 10:59 am

Actually looks pretty fun at that size... Guessing it's gotta be pretty damn shallow though?

goofyfoot Tuesday, 19 Jan 2021 at 11:43 am

I reckon that’s a lot bigger than you’re thinking pops.

Edit, just saw convo further up. May actually be smaller than I’m thinking..

Pops Tuesday, 19 Jan 2021 at 11:46 am

Hard to tell without a surfer for reference; I'm just guessing by the thickness of the lip & the (relative) lack of stepiness going on.

mattlock Tuesday, 19 Jan 2021 at 11:48 am

Double dip from the double lip.

Blowin Friday, 22 Jan 2021 at 07:15 am

Epic shot today.

High thrill quotient. Points deducted if it’s a tow entry . I’m hoping it’s not .

Any chance of a clarification ?

Craig Friday, 22 Jan 2021 at 07:22 am

Knowing where it is I'd say no, great paddle entry!

stunet Friday, 22 Jan 2021 at 08:44 am

100% paddle.

A glass-bottom boat couldn't give him better vision of the reef than what he'd be seeing now.

Blowin Friday, 22 Jan 2021 at 09:35 am

I’ll have what he’s having.

Solitude Saturday, 23 Jan 2021 at 12:12 pm

Amazing shot for today, congratulations Daniel Woodward. Thank you for sharing.

The illuminated surfer in barrel, the birds, apparent isolation. Proper land before time stuff.

It’s really easy to glance at some of these shots on our phones and move on without truely appreciating the captured moment. I miss print.

Sprout Saturday, 23 Jan 2021 at 12:13 pm

Agreed, incredible photo! Love the slice of jade amongst the orange. Not often they make you stop and stare these days.

Westofthelake Saturday, 23 Jan 2021 at 04:48 pm

As above. Magic stuff. Thought it was Sunday for a sec.

Craig Tuesday, 26 Jan 2021 at 07:43 am

Anyone getting similar vibes? Insane shot and moment! Old mate isn't in the nicest place!
