In semi lockdown I'm finally sorting through a lifetime of photos and inspired by what Craig and Andy recently posted I thought why not.
We travel a fair bit and there has to be some crackers in the vaults.
Good if we follow the Swellnet tradition of not naming or being too obvious.

Jamy, love that last place, the kids were racing each other down the beach, a good memory.

Chook, rode a Ducati 1200 multistrada.
Was a bit big on some of the switchbacks but had plenty of torque so would punch out of the corners easy.
Was riding for 15 days all through the alps and the lakes region north of Milan with three mates, great roads and you didn't need to be looking out for cops all the time like here. You could ride fast as you like as long as you aren't being a dickhead and slow down through the towns and villages.

Indo Dreaming, that was '88. June, July, August.

You parked your 125cc in Pecatu and hiked for 45min. Those two little warungs were the only infrastructure I saw on the coast between Uluwatu and Jimbaran.

I surfed Bingin with the same 4 guys most days. Never saw anyone else there. One day, I thought I'd try my luck up the coast and arrived at Canggu, only to find the same 4 guys out at the rivermouth, haha.

Ulus had 20-30 out. Padang well subscribed on good days (10-15). Didn't see a soul at Balangan.

"@Island Bay

What year was that roughly?

Was already much more built up than that when i first went there, but still pretty basic and a far cry from what it is now.

Id love to make a website or even start a facebook group or page to collect all these old Indo photos so they are collected in one place."

Great photos MOS
Gives a perspective of normal life in some of these places which we normally only see through media in a mostly negative way.

mugofsunshine, when were you in Syria? My partner, her daughters and myself were due to leave today to go there via Lebanon. Was on to a local agent to arrange everything... then obviously had to shelve all plans. Keen as to visit.

Great pics everyone, this is a ripper thread.

goofyfoot Thursday, 9 Apr 2020 at 10:19 am new

Due to go to Syria today?!
That’s not something you hear everyday

mugofsunshine Thursday, 9 Apr 2020 at 01:05 pm new

Hey Pat, we were there in 2009, just before it all kicked off. Loved it. Friendly, clean, amazing food and a hip cafe scene in Aleppo. Only time we had issues was on the coast at Latakia where we mistakenly drove into a military exercise at night. Lot's of young men with big guns screaming their heads off and simultaneously shitting their pants. That took some talking...
You heading there for family reasons?

syria does sound beautiful, lot of roman, greek and other ancient ruins.
i recently read "the seven pillars of wisdom" by T. E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia). his descriptions of syria and allepo in particular were very evocative. it's one of the best books i've read. great for the lockdown.

mountian climbing...i went camping for a few nights in the blue mountains. my mate brought along his neighbour who had done a lot on mountaineering. as we are driving up, he tells us to pull into a servo so he can get food for the trip. we were stocked up with expensive dates, macadamias, assorted flat breads etc. he comes out with six boxes of yogurt dipped museuli bars. breakfast, lunch dinner...the same cold musueli bars. gave me an insight into mountaineering.

cmc...must have been amazing riding around that area of italy on a ducatti. and i bet you did have a bit of torque from a 1200cc ducatti. i'm a bmw rider, so never have much of a problem with police...just cruising.

GuySmiley last photo love being in the basilica thinking about what went on in there back in the day. Reminded me last time we were there the young fella got caught short and had to take a leak just behind where you were standing. Thought we might be desecrating an ancient monument but then he probably wasn't the first.

Yep VJ special spot that one, that was about a quarter of a century ago, no kids for me back then, plenty of uncrowded waves though.

french beachies - hossegor and capbreton, autumn 2015

indo-dreaming Friday, 10 Apr 2020 at 01:44 pm new

To be honest, i didn't even surf it either.

Story is, it was onshore and small where we were, and wind seemed wrong for the beachie, but thought we would go for a walk along the coast (rocky reef) more just to see what was there as has never walked the coast.

We walked for about 2 hours or so along the coast then through some bush, not really knowing where we were going then suddenly through the trees we saw a perfect offshore A frame break. (completely surreal experience as had no idea where the coast really was)

We then walked down the beach and this is what was there, it was then another two hours walk back to our boards (or 1hr direct but hard slog through swamp), so not realistic to do the mission all again (it's a very inaccessible area of coast)

Next day conditions and wind was different.

To be honest some amazing waves out there, but also looked hard to surf couple guys out but they were always in the wrong spot and a lot of waves too fast or just too heavy, but off course you would still paddle out just hoping you could snag a magic one.

I think I need a tissue. It’s OK, I’ve just got something in my eye.
